10 Dirty Little SEO Tips and Tricks

SEO Tips and Tricks

It seems like I am getting more and more requests via email to share different information on business and blogging, the emails I receive from all of you are great and I appreciate the fact that you take the time to connect and interact with me. Recently a lot of the questions coming in are questions about SEO tips. I’m not really sure that I am the right guy to come to for SEO tips and tricks but if you guys and girls ask for it I’ll try to offer up some things that I think make a difference in increasing search engine traffic.

Before I get to the list I would like to point out that there are literally hundreds of things that you can do to optimize your blog or website for search engines, these are just a few of the things that I have found to be useful over the years.

10 SEO Tips and Tricks

1. Deep Linking

I am probably starting to sound like a broken record with my constant preaching about deep linking and how it can help you keep search engine spiders on your blog or website longer, it’s also a great way to expose more of your content and increase page views. Deep linking is a crucial and key factor in taking your search engine results from Google and Bing to the next level.

2. Keyword Density

If your a newbie blogger or a noob your probably wondering what the hell keyword density is and how keyword density can help you to achieve better search engine results, with that thing called.. Keyword Density. If you take a look at my last sentence you might see that I peppered it with the “keyword density” statement, the more you use a relevant keyword or statement within your post the better off you will be, don’t go bananas with this or Google might give you the smack down. If my target for this post was “dirty little SEO tips”, you would see the statement more frequently in this post.

3. Blog Commenting

There are all kinds of ways to get backlinks to your blog or website, one of the easiest ways to get backlinks is by taking the time to leave a comment on a Do Follow blog. The more dofollow blogs you leave comments on the more backlinks you will receive as long as you are leaving them on DoFollow blogs like Extreme John.

4. Be a Spider

The internet is about webs, webs that connect relevant information. I have always believed that the larger your spider web is the more traffic you control, the math is simple after that. More traffic = MORE MONEY! I have owned hundreds of domains across various niche’s for over 10 years now, over 75% of those domains, websites and blogs were built to drive traffic to a specific domain for a specific purpose. Again, MORE TRAFFIC = MORE MONEY.

5. Trap Your Traffic

The more posts you write or pages you have that you can link from within your blog the better, limit using plugins that aren’t a necessity especially from within your posts. More important than limiting using Wordpress plugins, it’s most important to avoid using third party Wordpress Plugins because one way or another it’s a traffic leak.

6. Use Your Header

As in header tags. As you can see each of the 10 SEO tips in this list are presented in a bold larger font, this is done using the <h2> tag. I also took advantage of the <h1> tag which you can see just before this list, it says 10 SEO Tips and Tricks.

Where to use h1,h2 and h3 Tags

H1 = Chapter Heading
H2 = Section Heading
h3 = Paragraph Heading

P.s. I used the <h3> tag to kick off the above section.

7. Put the Cherry on Top

Take the extra time to ice that cake and put the cherry on top of each one of your posts, include videos and pictures. When you include your pictures don’t forget those <alt> tags, and don’t forget to make that ALT tag a keyword or phrase that matches your post title. When adding video content to your posts chances are your going to be using a video from a sharing site like You Tube, don’t forget to hyperlink one of your keyword or key phrases to the video.

8. Keyword Consistency

No I am not going to tell you to be consistent and post something new every single day that is based on the same thing over and over again, make money bloggers make this mistake a lot in my opinion. When you decide on your keywords take time to write them down and make sure that you include them in your post title, image alt tags, meta keywords, post tags and any header tags that you can. The more you know about your keyword and the possible variations the easier it will be for you to use those same keywords and key phrases in different ways in the areas I just mentioned.

9. Blog Naturally

One of the biggest mistakes that bloggers and blogging CEO’s make when they try to attack a keyword or key phrase is trying too hard, be yourself and blog naturally. Chances are if you take the time to be yourself instead of trying to sound like some mega authority or pro blogger idiot your articles will get better ratings and feedback from within your network, the more your network enjoys your work the more your network shares your goods.

10. Do Follow Forums

When it comes to getting backlinks leaving blog comments is pretty much a no brainer, however placing a link back to your site in your signature on do follow forums like The Tan Forum is an excellent way of grabbing backlinks. In my opinion there aren’t enough bloggers that get involved in forums and take advantage of that free backlink traffic.

Trust me when I tell you there are easily another 100 tips that can be added to this post, a lot of bloggers will tell you that the SEO tips contained in this article are crap, I will tell you that my experience tells me otherwise. If I had all day I would easily add another batch of SEO tricks to this post, since I don’t have all day and I doubt you have all day either I’ll end this here.

Deep linking is easier when you comment on do follow blogs that use Commentluv plugin. You get an immediate link to your most recent post, but that eventually becomes a deep link. I comment all over, but concentrate on CommentLuv blogs.

Looks like I need to be active in some forums, though.

I’m with Keith on preferring CommentLuv blogs.

It used to be that having a link in your comment was a huge nono, grossly self-promotional among those that made the rules on such things.

CommentLuv rightfully smashes that whole paradigm.

I have a post or two left in me on deep linking. Sometime in the next month or so…

Forums… no time for that right now! No way I can keep up with everything and still be able to get programming and products out the door.

Great tips there. I’m surprised by how many people don’t use alt tags. It’s one of the easiest ways to get a lot of traffic.

And thanks for reminding me to do more deep linking. I need to take that to the next level.

As far as the spider effect, I’ve done really well by having my own feeder domains pointing towards my main blogs, but also writing articles for Ezine Articles, Hubpages, Wordpress.com etc.

This isn’t crap, I do all that you mentioned too and it works. I agree about the commentluv and the alt tags. I too am shocked by how many people don’t use them. I can only guess its because they don’t know better. I get a ton of my traffic from google images because I label the pictures I use and I label them correctly (so many times they aren’t labeled period or incorrectly i.e. extreme_john opposed to Extreme John). I link everything possible to relevant sites (I see SO many blogs with NO links except the one referencing where they got the info, tsk tsk). Another thing, which I realize works for me due to the type of site I have, is linking names to fan sites opposed to IMDB or Wikipedia. It brings way more traffic for obvious reasons. I could go on and on, but you’ll have to pay me :high:

I find that a lot of my clients make the following mistakes: title tags that do not describe the content or lack a targeted keyword, and images being called things like cat_image_1 instead of the name of the product (or even model number) etc.

Great point you raise ‘One of the biggest mistakes that bloggers and blogging CEO’s make when they try to attack a keyword or key phrase is trying too hard, be yourself and blog naturally. ‘ If they can’t read your text logically because of all the keywords you’ve tried to add, people will simply leave again!

You need to be careful how much you do the commenting on blogs/forums though:
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/11/hard-facts-about-comment-spam.html

Like the spammer above posting crap about foreclosures, I hate these people. You can find lots of Indian companies now as well offering “cheap back link building”, all they do though is spam every blog possible creating useless no value links.

But hopefully genuine useful comments on blogs with the same theme as your site won’t get devalued so much but how does Google know!

Anyway sorry for part ranting there but the Google blog on comment spam is worth reading I think.

Great post John. Honestly, these aren’t really dirty secrets at all but completely legitimate ways to gain traffic and backlinks. However, keep in mind that in order to take advantage of your traffic, you need to be targeting a relevant audience and have great content on your site that they won’t mind browsing around to read.

I’m glad so many mentioned focusing on commenting on blogs with ComLuv. When I first registered I didn’t spend enough time to learn all it had to offer. I just revisited the CommentLuv site and checked out the search function. Thanks for the tips.

I don’t think that keyword density is an important factor any longer, it’s more about prominence in my opinion. Was reading recently on SEOmoz, seems many agree that the image alt tags are very important as listed here too.

Nice newbie tips. Mark I disagree with your comment on KW density, it’s still important to have a good KW density on page.
