10 Must Have WordPress Plugins for Newbie Bloggers

by Extreme John on August 11, 2009 |

I rarely do these Top 10 plugins or lists of things that I specifically feel that a blogger should use, that’s mainly because everyone blogs for a different reason and with different goals in mind, not every WordPress Plugin I recommend is great for everyone.

I wanted to take a few minutes today and slap together a quick list of the WordPress Plugins that I actually do feel every new blogger or “newbie” is going to want to grab for their WordPress blog before they get off the ground with it.

10 Must have WordPress Plugins for New Blogs

  1. Akismet 2.2.6 – kill the comment spam on your blog before you even
  2. aLinks 1.0rc2 – automatically generates links to keywords within your site, that you choose
  3. All in One SEO Pack 1.6.4 – maximize your search engine rankings
  4. Google XML Sitemaps 3.1.4 – builds a sitemap which is supported by all major search engines
  5. NextGEN Gallery 1.3.5 – makes it easy to catalog/display pictures or other images on your blog
  6. SexyBookmarks 2.5.2.2 – doesn’t matter how unsocial you are, at least give people a chance to share your crap
  7. Subscribe To Comments 2.1.2 – makes it a snap for your readers to subscribe to your comments feed
  8. WP-DBManager 2.50 – Optimize, repair and maintain your WordPress database
  9. WP Greet Box 5.2.0 – display different welcome msgs to your visitors based on where they came from, Google, Facebook, etc.
  10. Viper’s Video Quicktags 6.2.6 – embedding videos is the new “in” thing, sooner or later you will want to do it

Nothing too crazy today just a quick list of some wordpress plugins that are perfect for a newbie blogger to install on their own new blog, you know me… Im the master of blogging tips for new bloggers, haha. Kidding.

Anyway that’s it for today, if you feel up to the mission follow me on Twitter or subscribe to my rss feed, you would be surprised just how often I slip up and post something that might be useful. Oh yeah if you recommend any other WordPress plugins for new blogs please feel free to leave a comment.

P.s) I have been fighting an issue with this blog being slow or bogged down for almost a year, it constantly pissed me off. That is until Mike decided to uninstall my Stat Press plugin for WordPress, I guess it doesn’t handle sites with a lot of data too well or something like that, i’m not technical I just crush a lot. Have a great day.

Great list John! I am surprised you don’t have CommentLuv up there, but I guess you can’t list them all.

Glad to hear you figured out was bogging down your blog and took care of it. I would think busy sites like yours would make stat programs work overtime ;)

Not a bad list.. Some of them I already use, some I’ve heard good things about, and others still are a complete mystery to me… (though I’m gonna make a point of looking into them now)

You have a good list of plugins for the beginners out there, and I really like Akismet, All in One SEO Pack, WP Greet, and Google XML Sitemaps. I think they are essential for anyone. Greg Ellison

John,
I pretty much use all of these. The only one that I do not use is the videos tag plugin. I agree with you that every newbie should install these 10 plugins.

P.S.
You should try out AntispamBEE instead of Akismet.
It was designed to overtake Akismet, I have virtually no spam since installing it.

I think I need the Alinks plugin, going to have to add that in tonight. Would be perfect for a little project that I’m going to start working on.

Yes these are the 10 must have plugin which everyone should have. But with only 10 plugins it’s hard to run a successful blog. I have almost 30-35 plugins running for my blog.

But this deserves a re-tweet from me.

I’m currently using the plugin #1, 3, 4, 6, & 7. All of these plugins really useful and the most I love will be All In One SEO Packs, it really helps when it comes to SEO. I have 20plugins activated in my blog, do you experience slow loading speed while visiting my blog?

@Doug I decided to keep CommentLuv off of the list because I consider it to be more of the “next level” newbie blogger plugin. Not to mention there are plenty of bloggers that don’t want anything to do with comments, crazy but true.

@Hard Rocking South African hopefully you will learn something new if nothing else :)

@Karen I was over visiting your site today and noticed you had the plugin installed already, I think you will be happy with the results of it.

@Greg thank you Greg

@ShaunJudy ahhh maybe I will try out AntiSpamBee, I have had a few spam comments slip through the last few days.

@Mike I am surprised you don’t already use that bad boy, it saves hours when writing a blog post.

@Typhoon I know plenty of successful blogs that run with no plugins, however I do have a Wordpress Plugin addiction and currently run something like 50 plugins.

@Tech-Freak Stuff thats great news hopefully you found a few things that helped you out.

@Compute Live I really can’t say which of the two plugins are better because I only have personal experience with All in One SEO.

@Lee Ka Hoong No I sure don’t I was just over at your blog a little while ago and it was nice and fast, like I said above I run 50 right about now.

@George Serradinho yes and the parts it automates are the parts I hate doing.

@Benjamin Cip Thanks Benjamin, if I forgot two plugins can you be kind enough to add them so that new bloggers can use the ones you feel I forgot. Thank you.

Thanks for the list John. What exactly does WP-DBManager do. I know you said it repairs the database — but what is there to repair?

Hey. Very cool of you to be so sure to reply to all comments. I do not have that big of a reader base, so I have yet to worry about this. Actually, I am hoping that the Greet Box plug-in will help build my RSS. Thanks for the info. Best of luck on the blog….looks great.

I personally prefer sociable over sexybookmarks, but they basically do the same thing. I guess it’s a question of aesthetics.

So I decided to make a new site to test all my new web developing skills. I made it on Wordpress so I can have a nice little blog too. I usually ignored most of your Wordpress posts since I was mainly using Blogger. I’ve installed a couple you listed above and learned a little more about comment luv. Learning is great.

Hi John
Subscribe To Comments really makes the comments come to life. You can dip in and out and reply to what people are saying.

Akismet is a no brainer… got to have it.

Notice you haven’t got CommentLuv on the list.
A must have plugin to get other bloggers to comment.

@Keith Davis@public speaking, very true and thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. I do feel that CommentLuv is an important plugin, however it’s not a must have for all newbie bloggers. Reason I say that is because not every blogger wants comments, crazy I know, but true.
