I will try to keep this as short and sweet as possible because I need to head out and get the hair did and run a few errands, but I really couldn’t pass on writing this post real quick before I head out. So far today has been a pretty decent day, I went to bed pretty early last night and rolled myself into the office before 7am this morning, I love getting here early because I get so much more done.
I went through my typical routine of checking email (some), and the various social media and social networking sites that we use for business and I use for the Extreme John blog. I logged into Seesmic to check on any replies on Twitter and see if anyone had anything exciting to retweet, I started out by saying good morning to a few ladies I connect with on twitter before thanking everyone for retweeting my messages.
After I finished saying hello and doing all of that fun twitter status update stuff I started to thank everyone that was nice enough to retweet any of my posts or my tweets while I was catching up on some needed zzzzzzz’s. Thanks again everyone! Anyway, back to the bullshit at hand. One of the twitter followers I have replied to my thank you tweet with the tweet below, it instantly pissed me off.
Unfollowing me?? OMG NO PLEASE NOT THAT! Dude, I don’t even know you and no clue that you even existed until you retweeted my post and I thanked yo for it. Anyway, for some odd reason I tried to help the blogger out by explaining some of the very things I stated a second ago, but he persists to insist that I copied one of his blog posts, or at least the idea.
This is where it really became a pain in the ass because now I have to click on the twitter user in Seesmic which brings up the users profile than I have to follow it over to Twitter so I can hope that the bloggers site is in his bio, luckily it was. I followed the link to his site (your welcome) and scrolled the front page real quick when I saw a post titled “Do Follow VS No Follow – What Loses?“
Some of you might remember that over the last few days I posted a couple of posts in regards to Do Follow blogs and took some time to explain Do Follow and No Do Follow for some of the new bloggers that come through here, the first post was titled “No Do Follow Means No RSS Subscription“, the second post was titled “No Do Follow Blog vs Do Follow Blog“, which was a post I wrote in order to answer a few of the emails I received after the first post. You can add those posts to a list of probably 10-20 other posts I have done in the last 8 months on Do Follow and No Do Follow, something I started writing about thanks to John Sullivan from Pot Politics, certainly no thanks to ASSuming blogger that thinks he is the only one on planet earth that can think of a title like “No Follow vs Do Follow” or “Do Follow vs No Follow”.
Anyway with that being said, here’s just a few reasons why I would not and DID NOT copy the ASSuming blogger.
10 Reasons I Wouldn’t Copy Your Blog Article
- I have more creativity than I know what to do with.
- I’ve never even heard your blog
- I’ve never even seen of your blog
- I don’t search for like articles on Google or anywhere else when I post. I just post.
- Your writing style is great for you… It sucks for me.
- When I have idea’s I blog, when I don’t. I don’t. Period.
- I have been known to write 70+ posts in a day, you don’t write enough for me to copy.
- Bloggers respect and trust me as well as my word. 500,000 views aren’t worth breaking that.
- I give link juice and props every week to bloggers, many I don’t even know. I certainly don’t steal them.
- I respect and understand networking with other bloggers and spend a lot of time doing it, if you need a class let me know.
So to the assuming blogger I say this… It might be time for you to take a break, or better yet wake up and open your eyes. Look around you, your not the only person on the planet that can thing of a post title that includes Do Follow vs No Follow, however you might be the only blogger to put “What Loses?” on the end of it. Unfollow me all you want, talk shit all you want but for the sake of being a decent blogger do some homework before you go running your mouth about things and ASSuming. It makes you look silly.
O.k, now it’s time for everyone else to chime in with their thoughts on the situation, those of you that have been reading my blog for a while now or even new bloggers that have just started coming through here, leave a comment and let me know if you think I stole this bloggers idea and post title for my post. I’m a big boy deliver it however you want, if you think I did than say it. No hard feelings at all.

Wow, what an ass. Don’t even stress about it mate. He’s probably just jealous after seeing your xmas party pics! I know I am!
By the way, do you think your writing style has changed with experience? Do you think its something you can improve with practice? The reason I ask, is because I really find my write ups a bit boring… i’d like them more natural and easy flowing.
@warriorsofmma, haha nah it’s all good bro, I always have that instance of insanity when I can just lose it. Luckily within a few minutes I usually regain some form of self control, because given the right moment I would explode on something like this.
In regards to the writing style (because my grammar sucks so bad) I am much better suited at just being me, write it how it hits my mind instead of how I think people should read it or might want to read it. It’s a good thing, but it can also be very bad because I’ll throw little statements out here and there and people will assume it’s about them when in fact it usually isn’t, weird but true.
I think the single best piece of advice I can give you is.. stop thinking about it. Just open a window and start doing your thing.
Hey john I’m familiar with iwoodpecker. I’m actually su8rprised he said that and perhaps he had a bad day. He recently joined up to our social community and now the comment he left on blogengage makes sense. At first I was wondering what he was talking about.
Hopefully this can end without someone getting socially crunched lol.
bbrian017´s last blog ..Blog Engage Announces a live show
@bbrian017, happy to see he’s hanging around at Blog Engage, it can’t be a bad thing for you. As for any comment he left there, I didn’t see it. I will have to take a look for it if I get some free time.
As for anyone being socially crunched, it’s not realistic for me. This blog is made up of a lot more than just people that read based on my social profiles and the things I do online. As for him, you have to be social before you can be socially crunched.
this guy needs to get a clue…you are one of the realest people i know, and you do have waaaaay too much going on in that head of yours (its honestly scary to even try to guess what goes thru ur head, lol) to even think about copying someone…thats just not your style. you are an orginal, you have your own thoughts and ideas and definitely don’t need to look to some joe blow.
@calisun, awwww that’s the kindest way that anyone has ever told me that I’m a little out of my mind before. Haha thank you, it just goes to show how some people speak before they actually do any homework. Silliness.
Maybe he was hoping to piss you off so you would write a post linking to his and he would gain a little traffic [spike?]. I don’t believe you would copy someone else and if you did garner an idea from someone else you would give them credit and some love to boot. Just my opinion ~ and we all know what they say about opinions, don’t we?
@Anne, sure do Anne…. BUT (and this is very one sided of course) I think your opinion is right on the money, and anyone that took more than 30 seconds to leave a comment on one post would probably know that, which is exactly why your opinion is more than just an opinion. You have history, you see what I do here and how I do it.
@Anne, oh wait as for the free traffic and the juice, I figured it was the giving season. I could have just as easily not linked or even mentioned his site.
@Extreme John, And that just shows him to be the ass you implied him to be. All he had to do was leave a comment on your post saying something about agreeing and he, too just wrote about the same issue. At least that’s what I would’ve done.
@Anne, for some reason a lot of bloggers take the path of not saying it to you on your blog, pretty silly if you ask me especially if you can get some niche specific backlinks for doing it.
Copying idea is ok, that’s essential what the major newspapers are doing. My local newspapers take most of the ideas from Reuters to fill up the Finance section.
Anyway, they give credit to Reuters, and rewrite the whole thing.

That’s crazy. I read a lot of blogs and see a lot of other blogs writing about subjects that other sites have already written about. About the time you wrote your DoFollow/NoFollow articles, I count at least 4 other sites writing about the same time. Each one was different and each one added there thoughts, opinions and advice.
Besides, someone taking someone else’s idea and building on it, happens everyday in the real world. What the issue?

@element321, very well said my friend.

Dofollow blog posts have been around for quite some time now. I write about SEO, blogging, affiliate marketing etc, and if you visit any dedicated blog in those niches you will see quite a bit of overlap in topics and discussions and even find posts where I have the same view point as the author. Doesn’t mean I copied them or they copied me.
To quote a Nas song that I like, ‘no idea’s original, there’s nothing new under the sun, It’s never what you do, but how it’s done’.

@Karl Foxley@Derby SEO Company, great Nas quote bro, I keep telling myself I’m going to throw more music in my posts and have a constant #fail at it. haha.
For some reason I find the idea of bitching about it somewhat ridiculous, but hey to each is own right? Anytime you travel the same roads in a niche you see the same content types, hell someone wrote 2 posts in the same day based on my last Do Follow post and told me they were doing it. Was I pissed? Not at all.
@Karl Foxley@Derby SEO Company,

I guess the real question is this, what the heck can anyone write about that has not been written about before? AHH, this writing thing has been around a minute. The thing is to write about your chosen topic and interject your own personality or viewpoint.
Just a week or so ago, I was just about to hit the publish button when I checked in on some of my peeps on Tweetdeck. Well, one of my friends had already posted on the exact same topic hours before, so I withheld my post and moved on to something else. It’s bound to happen when there are so many bloggers out there.
This whole deal is likely some misunderstanding, and in the spirit of positive vibes, I hope it’s all water over the dam. Oops, someone has used that line before.

“John, that’s an awesome post! Thanks for classing!” – it could be this like from me. But aren’t you bored of comments like that? Aren’t you bored of relationships within blogosphere, where everyone is thanking each other for the “GREAT” posts?
Think outside the box
Read my answer.
iWoodpecker´s last blog ..Thank You, ExtremeJohn, or Why I Blaimed John in Stealing My Idea?
@iWoodpecker, I would love to say that I agree with you, but the reality is that you really haven’t read my blog enough to understand how I write or who I am or any of that, which puts you at a disadvantage when it comes to posing the question of being bored.
No, I am not bored. I go at it with readers that hate my MMA opinion, my NFL predictions, hate me simply because I’m me and from time to time I scrap with another blogger. I stay pretty busy with it, so boredum doesn’t set in for me like that and when it does I find something else to do.
Now, I can see where you are looking at the “promotional” position and the benefits of promoting that way, however I will say that I think it might be trying to sell something that isn’t 100% true. Personally I think you realized that maybe…. just maybe… you were wrong and somewhat regret the approach you took to handling the situation.
I read people pretty well and always have, I can’t say that I am buying. I also can’t say that I blame you for responding to my post the way you have, it’s a good move on your part and to some might even make you look like a super intelligent guy, that is as long as no one calls you out on it.
Now IF it was done as a promotional idea I think your going to see a short term traffic spike and you might even grab a few viewers along the way, long term I don’t see it working out to your advantage. I’m not popular enough for you to ride drama coat tales to the top, yet I’m not small enough to where this thing will just sit low enough under the radar for everyone to accept it and move on.
I think you would have had better “promotional” results had you continued to build your network of friends and bloggers and created content that might be more shareable than a keyboard battle between a blogger and a blogging CEO. No one really cares, think about it.
@Extreme John, Thanks for your answer. I’d really like to put a period now, ’cause it’s just not for me to play the role of a bad guy.
Thanks again. I hope there will be someone who enjoyed this whole thing.

iWoodpecker´s last blog ..Thank You, ExtremeJohn, or Why I Blaimed John in Stealing My Idea?
@iWoodpecker, I bet you would like to put a period on it! Backfiring isn’t it? Hopefully a lesson learned, and my suggestion would be to come clean on your blog to keep any respect you MAY still have. Something like this, if it goes viral could actually ruin you as a blogger buddy!

iWoodpecker´s last blog ..Thank You, ExtremeJohn, or Why I Blaimed John in Stealing My Idea?
@iWoodpecker, if anything it will cost you readers, me for one has now unsubscribed from your blog.
@David Hobson, If this is a cost of this way of promotion, then let it be. What I did was a try. If you still didn’t get what this was all about.. then it’s up to you to unsubscribe from my blog

iWoodpecker´s last blog ..Thank You, ExtremeJohn, or Why I Blaimed John in Stealing My Idea?
@iWoodpecker, I should have read further down in the comments before responding to you. Dave’s comment proves my point, it’s not so much about Dave unsubscribing or Mary or anyone else. It IS about trust and networking because there are bloggers and just people in general that enjoy that aspect, which means they don’t enjoy this aspect or I guess I should say approach.
@iWoodpecker, I’m a prick like that.
@iWoodpecker, if you didn’t “expect anyone to love you for this action”, why are you so concerned about “playing the bad guy” now?
@Extreme John, John, don’t you see that you’re kinda growing this whole thing? And you like it according to the number of comments. I wanted a period, you want it to be continued. Ask yourself, please, – why?
iWoodpecker´s last blog ..Thank You, ExtremeJohn, or Why I Blaimed John in Stealing My Idea?
@iWoodpecker, now you want to ask me questions and now you want to think things through. Why? Because where I’m from you don’t do shit like that, period. It’s a simple formula actually, you pressed play > now I will decide when to press STOP.
Or better yet, when you admit to everyone on your blog exactly what it was that you were doing, without coating it in a bunch of bullshit.
Cheddar Bob
I would say that is a different form of “linkbaiting” and I would say it is yet to be seen if it works, I would gather that it will hurt him in the end. Seriously, I wrote a short article on do-follow this week too, got good response and comments and was thinking of following it up….will someone get upset with me….I don’t really care!
My research will be based more on the actual value of comment links whether they are followed or not (you better not steal my idea either!)

@Extreme John, I’ve learned that lesson myself after having been sued twice over things I never even said online. They were just mentioned on a board where I was an inactive moderator. Still, anyone can sue you for anything – why give them a reason?

@Mike from Daily Shot Of Coffee, good point. I Should be more understanding.
This post from iwoodpecker was never about plagarizing his idea. It was simply about pulling a sleazy trick to get linkbait from a more popular blogger.
The other day, @iwoodpecker wrote a post thanking the 3 subscribers to his blog – well guess what – I was one of those three.
And after today, it’s going to be 2.
As a newbie blogger, I’ve already had great, positive interaction with at least half of the folks who have left comments here (ExtremeJohn -I’ve been waiting to get my blog ‘dofollow’ enabled before starting up a good convo with you!). And with good fortune, I’ll continue to grow realtionships and community with these folks. But I think it may be the beginning of the end for iwoodpecker.
Consider every letter you type, iwoodpecker, from this point forward – that doesn’t include the keys: I- a-m s-o-r-r-y – another nail in your blogging coffin.

As for the comments, it’s good stuff but I would rather see a discussion that teaches people. Well, I guess this did teach someone something.
First off, I’m absolutely jealous that you can write so many posts a day… especially posts with such quality info. I’ve never been disappointed with one of your posts on blogging & social media (not to say there is anything wrong with the others, I’m just a pale gal who doesn’t know much about MMA).
Next, I took a peek at your post and the one on the other site, and there was nothing similar except the general topic. They were obviously done from two different perspectives and done with a different approach. I can totally understand you needing to make the response you did, as you were being accused of something you definitely didn’t do!
Now I’m going back to the jealousy part again… 70… one day. I’m in awe!

Merry Christmas and thank you for all of the kind words, coming from someone as talented as you means a lot.
Yeah John, that woodpecker is a pretty transparent link baiter and some of our lower species get off on promoting themselves that way. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that because as popular as you are you get a lot of it. When they are this obvious (YOU stole HIS idea??) with the BS it’s time to shut them down. Your friends and fellow bloggers know who you are.
BTW have a great Christmas, I am taking a little break but will be back after the 1st of the year. I hope Florida is as nice as Arizona is right now. I’m looking forward to a bit of warm sunshine and some golf! Take care!
@Dick, the biggest thing that came out of this entire thing wasn’t what he had hoped for, the biggest success ended up being a tremendous stand by bloggers from all over the world coming together to say, “That’s crap.” It shows that the community is a lot tighter than many might believe it is.
Enjoy your break and have a very Merry and Safe Christmas.
Oh, just one other thing, your readers might appreciate a little joke.
What can a woodpecker do that a man can’t? Answer; whistle through his pecker!
@Dick, hey if no one else appreciated it I certainly did.
You know all this is ridiculous on his part. For one titles can’t be copy-written and so what if two people write on the same subject. For him to accuse you of ripping off his title (even article) is crazy. Think I’ll write a post-Do Follow vs Nofollow – Does anyone lose? lol

Rose (Bloggertalk)´s last blog ..Taking a break due to health issues
@Rose (Bloggertalk), haha I say go for it and accuse him of ripping it off. ;)
@Rose (Bloggertalk), he tries to play it like he knew what he was doing, but we all know that he thought I ripped his post and mouthed off about it before doing any actual homework to see if the claim was even close to true. After getting busted, he tried to use the link baiting concept as a way out. All circus clown stuff either way.
I am somewhat dumbfounded by this entire series of events. I am trying to learn since I am still new. I read not too long ago about “black hat” and “white hat” SEO and can see that there are other considerations when interacting in the blogosphere.
I will say that I got a better understanding of do follow and no follow by reading your blog, extremejohn. I will also say that I am starting to get an understanding of what “linkbait” might be.
Kidgas´s last blog ..In the Top 1 Million!!
@Kidgas, thank you for stopping by and taking the time to leave a comment, it’s great to hear that your learning something here, even with the silly stuff going on.
As for link baiting, that’s a simple one. Someone like Pecker runs his mouth hoping that it will get someone fired up and it will generate a response, traffic and comments. It worked for him, for the moment. However in the long term it’s safe to say that most bloggers don’t have the patience for the baby games.
@Extreme John,
I had a blogger (a fellow Thesis Theme user and affiliate) accuse me of “cookie stuffing” (an illegal practice) in Nov 09. He went viral with his post, his YouTube video about it and all of his other guerilla marketing tactics and got me terminated from the DIY Themes (Thesis Theme) affiliate program.
I had to immediately defend myself, spread the word that I was innocent and convince the DIY Themes guys to admit they got it wrong – based on this other guy’s wrong accusations.
I got an apology from DIY Themes, a public retraction from the idiot who started it all and life now goes on. See my link in CommentLuv.
BUT, I have a feeling that the guy who wrongfully accused me thought he would attack the Thesis Theme site that was on page 1 of Google and hope for heaps of traffic and publicity.
Instead of coming across as a hero, he came across as an idiot and is supposed to be some amazing SEO marketer.
Thanks to your advice via email John (and many others) I got through it without getting on a plane and finding where he lives! or grabbing the tissues and bailing out of blogging.
“What pisses you off, only makes you stronger.”
Now I know that even the big scary looking guys – self professed pussy cat – yeah I believe you (LOL) – get targeted by idiots.

You clearly give kudos to those who warrent it and as you say have written a crazy amount of information which could possible mean sometimes that you cover the same subjects that others do, it’s inevitable, but your unique writing style etc means it’s always going to be your work.
Loving your site, only came across it today.
Good job
WOWzers!!! I hate that I missed this live action. These comments are better than MMA! You gave that douche a real smack down. I didn’t bother to read his post and have no intention of paying him any visits.
You have a lot of loyal fans and readers here and we all know your content is 100% original.

@Ms. Freeman@Baby Steps of an Internet Entreprenuer, I appreciate everyone’s support. Hopefully Cheddar Bob learned from it and moves on to make better decisions in his blogging future.
I like your 6th statement. Blogging can be very difficult, it’s true! Whenever you need to blog then you can’t think of anything, absolutely a serious thing that can cause you a headache. Ideas that come out naturally are more sensible than you just write it based on somebody’s post.
@iWoodpecker, your “funny card” chances ran out a while ago.
