I’m not really sure this is going to do the none bloggers out there that read my blog any good, but for the bloggers that check out this place hoping to find posts about blogging tips, SEO, and social media should find this pretty useful. Only if they put it to use of course.
Those of you that subscribe to my rss feed or follow me on Twitter have probably seen my weekly series titled “Sunday Smash” in your feed reader or somewhere on your Twitter dashboard. Basically my weekly recap includes some of the most popular posts on Extreme John as well as links to some of my favorite blog articles that I read throughout the week on other blogs, I often leave comments on those blogs as well. Leaving comments is a big part of blogging, networking and generating fresh traffic to your blog, I highly suggest that every blogger comment on other blogs.
10 Reasons You Should Do a Weekly Blog Recap
- It exposes your previous articles to your new readers
- It’s a great way to support your blogging community
- It offers your readers insight to articles you like
- It opens the door for more blog comments
- It increases relevant linking opportunities within your blog
- It increases subscribers and bookmarks
- It takes the load off of your creativity plate
- Using a WordPress Post Template plugin makes writing this post fast and easy
- It shares link luv with other bloggers who might return the favor
- It increases page views within your blog
This is another one of those topics where we can all use your feedback, especially if you currently have a blog and write a weekly recap. Take a moment to leave a comment with additional benefits of doing a weekly recap on your blog so that new bloggers can see the added perks of doing their own weekly recap if they aren’t already doing one and never considered it.

I’ve seen many people doing weekly recap but I’ve never tried this before, perhaps I need to start doing this for my blog. But is it recommended to do on a blog which updates only twice a week? Which mean I have only 2 posts recap for the week.

@Lee Ka Hoong@Make Money Online, I don’t think I would do it based on two weekly updates personally. It’s of course the bloggers preference.
@Extreme John, yea John, you upgraded your blog very frequent, you might have about 7-10 posts in a week, so a weekly recap for you is good. Perhaps I need to do it monthly recap since I have less posts in a week.

@Lee Ka Hoong@Make Money Online,
Go for monthly!
You can build it as you go. Every time you publish an article, add the link and a quick recap to your Monthly Review. At the end of the month, it’s mostly done.

@Dave Doolin, this idea sounds great! Perhaps I try to do it monthly and see how’s the result.
Thanks Dave for your opinion.

This is a good idea. But Lee Ka Hoong is sort of better off than me because he probably regularly updates his blog twice a week. Mine is a different story because there is actually no set schedule for updates. I update only when I have enough energy to do so after my day job. A lucky week means 3 updates. Sometimes a month would produce only 2 updates, sometimes even one.
Anyway, I have promised myself to do better this time. I am back on the blog path and I am seriously considering setting a regular time for blog work now. And I’ll remember this weekly recap idea.

@James Moralde,
James,
You can create a structure for your topic area that will considerably ease this problem. Between your comment and a post by baddeacon, I’ve got an idea for an article on this.

That’s what caught my attention on your blog originally. It’s a great idea and it gives a lot of visitors a quick summary of all the cool finds for the week and keeps them engaged.

I guess I should start doing something like this too, your 10 reasons does sound very compelling to me.
How about a quick guide post on how to use the Post Template plugin?

I’ve been thinking of including a weekly round-up of sorts, partially ‘cos I think that visitors are more likely to become regular if they see that there’s a certain amount of routine and they know what to expect from you and your blog

I really enjoy doing my weekly recap, though I missed it last week been on holiday, but suffice to say it will be back this week, I also enjoy reading other bloggers weekly recaps, it’s a great way to find some interesting blogs and new bloggers to follow..

Well, Nice to see these new smileys
(I really liked this plugin)
I think weekly recap post works good on blogs having around 10+ posts in a week..That’s why I don’t think it would work much on my blog as I don’t publish much posts every week.

#7 is my favorite reason. It is nice to have a break from the blogging grind every once in a while.
But number #2 and #9 is one of the best reasons to do it. It’s a great way to really build a community with other bloggers in your niche.
I don’t usually include my own articles in my round up – I may have to try incorporating that next week.

When my blog improves to about 5 updates a week on an average then I prolly do something like a recap weekly.

hmmm, I like the idea behind relieving pressure from the creativity plate.
I am a big fan of your sunday smash and I agree with the benefits you mentioned, it is great for SEO purposes. Thanks for the plugin tip, that should make my life easier.

Another reason is for you, the blogger. It forces you to go back through the week’s posts and some necessary cleanup.
For example, I always use the SEO Description field in the Review, so these all have to be complete in each post. Sometimes, they aren’t, I forget (or gaff) filling the SEO data. This way, it gets filled out.

I used to do that some time ago. But then stopped…I think I need to start again mostly on Sundays when many people who could have missed the important ones during the week. I personally like these recaps post as during the week I am stuck between updating my own blog and going to the university :-( So I usually do mass commenting during weekends.
Yes, I only started recently doing this.
I will be on number 15 next week Monday. I even have a monthly just for those late subscribers and to show my best.
It does indeed generate more traffic and others join in and start posting.
No #5 helps a lot as I can see the results already although it is very time consuming. No #9 is where it becomes juicy, this is where your audiance can double or triple.

#7 is definitely a great reason. Once you get into the rhythm of writing a specific type of post every week, it isn’t as difficult as coming up with new topics. So if you are in a rut for ideas, you still have your weekly template to fall back on.
No further comment required here (on my part) as I totally agree and defend that having a weekly recap is very beneficial. Saw that plugin link. I’ll try on my other WP blog and see how it goes.

Great idea John, but I reckon I will have to post a lot more regularly to make use of this tip. I can see it now, Sire’s weekly recap, and there would only be one link on it.
Mmmm, reckon I may have to pad it with BS so so people would have something to read. I could link to this post, that would give me two links.

Great Post.
I like it when blogs compile a list of weekly recap. It’s always a good way to catch up on popular posts you missed out on. I think I will need to start doing this as well.
Recap is good for new visitors; the loyal ones might be bored by such posts;
Anyway, overall the idea is good, even if a weekly basis might be too often for a recap in some cases.

@Car News and Reviews, in some cases doing a weekly recap might be too much, no sense doing one if you only write a new post every 4 days. Haha.
Great idea for the weekly recap. It sure is a great way to provide a quick post and sum up your week.
Thanks for the LINK to Wordpress.
@safaridave, haha no problem on the link. That plugin I posted makes doing the blog recap butta.
