16 Reasons Commenting on Your Blog Sucks

by Extreme John on October 29, 2009 |

Even though I am a blogging CEO I still try to find time to work leaving blog comments on the bloggers blogs that are nice enough to come through my blog and leave comments here, it’s a great way to build traffic and network with bloggers. Not to mention you would be surprised just what you can learn by visiting other blogs and leaving comments on them, I recommend Feedly for managing rss feeds and comment monitoring.

When you leave comments on blogs and specifically a lot of comments on blogs it should be no surprise that certain blogs will become annoying to leave comments on from time to time, I decided to put together a list of 16 reasons commenting on your blog might suck. I don’t expect that everyone will agree with me and the things that piss me off when leaving comments might be something you feel you need to have in place on your blog, or even something you get great results from. Don’t take it personally, it’s just my opinion and the things that I find annoying.

16 Reasons Commenting on Your Blog Sucks

Commenting on Your Blog Sucks

  1. Your Comment Luv plugin is not working or up to date
  2. You have Pre-Checked Notify by Email Subscriptions
  3. You have timed pop-up windows
  4. You have pre-checked Subscribe to Comments
  5. Your blog loads slow
  6. Your blog is not Do Follow
  7. Your blog is a blogger blog (I hate logging in)
  8. Your using a third party comment system that is not Do Follow (JSkit, Disqus)
  9. After submitting comment your blog returns a white page
  10. You use CAPTCHA as a way to stop spam
  11. You don’t use the Comment Luv WordPress Plugin
  12. Your spam filter plugin doesn’t allow my comment to post
  13. You need to approve comments because you fear spam
  14. All you blog about is making money online (it can get redundant)
  15. I have to search for a place to leave my comment
  16. People must leave a CAPTCHA after typing their comment

Those are just my personal views on what I find annoying when leaving comments on the various blogs that I visit and even blogs in my network, I personally believe that you should reward the people that are nice enough to leave a comment on your blog and I also believe it shouldn’t be like going through a rodeo circus. I hate receiving all kinds of BS email about comments or subscriptions I would never subscribe to on my own and I hate jumping through ropes just to leave a comment.

If you like blogging tips, seo tips or found something useful in here you might want to consider taking a moment to subscribe to my rss feed or follow me on twitter @extremejohn to stay up to date with new posts on my blog.

John,
I really agree with 7 and 8. I just hit the back button or the red X in the corner when I realize that I have to login to speak my mind. Friends, the more steps you add to any process, the fewer people will finish. That’s why fast food and box recipes are so popular. Cooking has more steps. Same as commenting. Keep it simple. Don’t waste your guests’ time.

Next is CommentLuv and DoFollow. Reward your commentors. I know I am preaching to the choir when I say that on ExtremeJohn.com because John, you take care of your commentors.

As far as manually approving comments, after a commentor has proven that they are not a spambot, don’t treat them like one. Yesterday morning, I posted a relevant comment (at least 100 words and on topic) on a blog I just discovered this week. It is still awaiting moderation almost 48 hours later. I will probably not go back. Yes, I am new to that blog so I can understand the moderation, but please, guy, moderate!!! No such problems at ExtremeJohn. That’s why you are on my daily read list.

Another great read, John!

I hate captchas especially those very hard to read captchas.

I also hate logging in and I also hate my comment to being moderated even though I’ve already left dozens of comments already.

@ZXT, oh yeah that happens to me all the time. Hell before the Tech Jaws guy decided he was the king of the blogging world I left all kinds of comments there. If I got lucky 3 of them were approved, needless to say you don’t see me leaving comments or even opening the site anymore at this point.

Yeah logging in totally sucks, but the worst is people who leave comments on a million different good dofollow blogs but their own blog is nofollow.

John, I totally agree with 7 and 8 above. Once I find out that I have to login or register to speak my mind, I hit the back button immediately. Every time you add an extra step, you exponentially decrease the number of people who will do it. Making commenting easier will definitely increase the quantity and quality of comments.

You also mention rewarding your commentors. Making commenting worthwhile always increases participation. Dofollow and CommentLuv are two of the best plugins developed.

Also, if you are going to moderate comments, please moderate them. Yesterday morning, I left a comment on a nice blog I just found and started reading this week. Almost 48 hours later, it is still awaiting moderation. I am still deciding if I will go back to that blog. It may make inclusion on my “No Follow” list. I can understand the moderatiion since it was my first comment, but please… moderate!

17. Once you determine that a visitor is not a spammer or a bot, make it easier for that visitor to share. Don’t waste your readers’ time.

As usual, John, right on the money and a great read.

By the way I like the emoticons above lol… :high:

Ok back to the post. I agree to all the points above except point 6 and 13.

It depends on the blog. On mine, I do have some really cool commentators (like you and sm others) but I also have trolls who keep waging wars lol. I think it is coz of the different controversial topics at times. And most of the time these place links to weird places on the net.

If a comment is spammy of course Akismet grabs it but at times people even says relevant things but yet the add link to bad neighborhood. (Like warez and porn). If I remove this link they’ll feel bad and say I edited their comment. So I leave it but the comments are nofollow.

Maybe its cz of the nature of my blog I can’t really use dofollow there but I am TOTALLY FOR dofollow. As for commenting I do not really see if a blog is dofollow or not. As long as I have something to say, I’ll comment.

Now since I cannot use dofollow, I try to reward commentators with a dofollow top commentator plugin and also added the comment luv one.

As for approving comments, as i said it depends on the nature of the blog. There were two saturdays when I had to be out so I placed the blog on auto approve as there was the weekly racing days posts.

As soon as I return on both days, people were fighting against each other and even insulting each other’s religion. That is why sometime approving comments is good in such cases 8)

By the way which plugin are you using for the emoticon John? I really like these.

Dave Doolin October 29, 2009 at 2:28 am

You know, it’s something I’ve never worried about. I vaguely recall a few years ago when there was a big brouhaha and everyone decided comments ought to be nofollow. I didn’t much care then so I didn’t pay attention.

And I actually don’t know what the settings on my site is. I’ll take a look at the page source at some point (the only thing I really trust is source code, it tells the truth).

The thing is this: nothing we – out here in blog land – do or do not do, really matters… because the people twisting the knobs at the search engines could simply decide that if everything is now dofollow, they’re going to change the weighting. It’s that simple.

Believe it or not, I only comment on blogs I find personally interesting. Like what have zebra stripe bikinis and stuff. Whether it’s follow or not, no worries either way.

I’m looking at this keyword luv thing too… I don’t get it. Does it really matter that much?

Maybe I’m completely out to lunch here.

Reply

Extreme John October 31, 2009 at 9:19 am

@Dave Doolin, I can’t say that the Keyword Luv thing has really made any difference to me around here, however for some trying to trap keywords and connect them to their site name it’s a nice addition. Not sure if anyone actually see’s anything out of it.

ashok October 29, 2009 at 2:40 am

I’ll second this list, although re: 13 my spam filter has been exceptionally aggressive at times for no reason, and at other times really lousy at picking up obvious pieces of spam. I think this: it’s pretty clear when some people make it as difficult as possible to comment, and I hate that.

Re: 14, people writing about making money online all the time – that’s a really big problem: I don’t know that I expect the blogosphere to be the epitome of rationality, but it’s pretty clear a lack of diversity in blogs means that certain niches are not sustainable. Promotion depends on having like-minded blogs in niches.

@ZXT,
No problem buddy. Even I don’t find much difference in having a nofollow or dofollow blog. If you observe carefully then you will find that most of the dofollow blogs get many comments and as a part time blogger I can’t afford to waste my time on replying and accepting each and every comments. Moreover I get casual reader who don’t prefer to comment on bloggers blog usually :(

It is from suggestions of great bloggers like extremejohn, sire (of wassupblog), brian hawkins, etc. that I have changed some features of my blog.

1- Removed the old annoying captcha and instead used the ‘captcha free’ plugin.
2- Utilized Lucia’s Linky Love plugin so that commenters who have made at least 3 (or 5?) comments get dofollow status.

I think I’m picking up a few more good points from this post here. Perhaps, I would do the following:

1- Install Comment Luv plugin.
2- Check for comments to moderate first thing every morning. BTW, comment moderation happens only for first time commenters. Others get through automatically.

I agree with #14. I have in the past commented on blogs like these, but eventually I ran out of non-redundant responses and thus have to stop my interaction.

More than a few times I’ve wanted to leave a comment on a blog, but because it’s a blogger blog and doesn’t have the option to post my name and url, I’ve just left and haven’t gone back. I know that it’s one of the default options in blogger, why take it away? Without is rather unprofessional.

Side note, I could care less about Do Follow. If you’re only commenting on Do Follow blogs, you’re doing it wrong.

@Mike from Daily Shot Of Coffee, just because you can care less about Do Follow doesn’t mean that your commentators could care less.

If you blog to sell products and don’t care about the comments or networking with other bloggers than your right Do Follow would be of no use to you.

However if your looking to build networks with other bloggers in your same niche and offer them a little sumtin sumtin for taking the time to comment on your blog as opposed to read it than, you’re doing it all wrong. :high:

I have run into many of these problems. I think a lot of the older WordPress sites that have not been updated in a while are the ones that are leading to the blank page after submitting the comment (which who knows is actually submitted).

Another reason to add to your list is blogs that claim DoFollow, but your name links back to your comment on their blog instead of your website.

I’ve found that the best way to get comments is to make leaving comments as easy as possible. This means forgoing the Captcha crap. Honestly, Akismet does a decent enough job, and any blogger worth his salt won’t mind spamming the occasional spam. I actually take great enjoyment out of spamming those suckers.

Spamming comments is so much better than just deleting them, because it helps akismet recognize them for the crap that they truly are.

4. You have pre-checked Subscribe to Comments

I assume you here might mean a newsletter subscription, for one of them? Otherwise, you could be in trouble :D I mean, your blog sends out an e-mail when somebody replies directly to a comment, and that’s not something you (as a commenter) even can turn off). I offer the same plugin, as you know, over at my site, I have it pre-checked though – but still it’s possible to uncheck it. I don’t recommend unchecking it though, as I wrote about here (you already read it): Why “Comment Reply Notification” Is A Must Have Plugin For Your Blog – Otherwise….

——————–
8. Your using a third party comment system that is not Do Follow (JSkit, Disqus)
——————–

Yeah I hate those two. Often they are “too complicated” to use just to leave a comment, I must really *want* to leave a comment, otherwise I don’t bother.

12. Your spam filter plugin doesn’t allow my comment to post

Unless they have the captcha thing turned on and pop-up forms and requires me to log in before commenting, then in this case it will be a matter of how moody I am that day :) I agree that commenting should be made easy and if you fear spam, then akismet is there to help and ultimately you can always moderate your comments.

Hi John,

I have just about quit commenting on blogs for many of the reasons that you mentioned here. I may have missed this post but it came up in my Google Alerts.

I now, live eat and breath leaving useful relevant comments. I like to call this approach Scratch My Back Marketing, as in a good comment gets a good link. However, I did a case study this summer and I discovered that only 43% of my comments where getting posted. Most of them got caught up in spam filters because I use SEO as part of my keyword phrase, as I have done here.

Just getting those 100 comments required that I visited about 120 blogs. The extra 20 where using third party comment systems. I judge the effectiveness of everything that I do in terms of ROI and blogs were not producing much.

Now, I almost exclusively use Web 2.0 Social sites to build links. I miss visiting blogs and reading other points of views, but I can not justify the ROI, as a CEO I am sure that you can relate.

The blogs that annoy me are the ones that have a registration system so you can’t leave a comment until you register. I just couldn’t be bothered – I really don’t need to have another user name and password to remember.

@Paula from Affiliate Blog Online, without a doubt one of the dumbest things ever. So many large communities are like that and it blows me away that people are willing to go through all of that in order to leave a comment, it’s crazy.

Thank you for commenting btw ;)

Most of your list brings up one important point, make it easy to comment. This is one of my basic fundamentals of business, make it easy for people to do business with you.

I am surprised you are bothered by #13. Iget so few comments I am not sure I am ready to give that up.

@Ned Carey, exactly. The harder you make it the more you increase the chance of losing a comment.

As for #13 it bothers me, however as this blog grows I am starting to appreciate it more.

Thanks for reminding me to install commentluv on my new blog (I do have it on my personal blog at israelimom.org – both are dofollow blogs).

What I don’t understand is how you can be dofollow, have what sounds like a weak spam filter and not approve comments manually? I can only imagine you have the best spam filter plug-in ever – care to share what it is?

@Anne at B6S.net,
I am not John but I’ll reply. I use Akismet. It has been almost perfect for me. I have had I think only two false positives and no obvious spam has made it through. It will occasionally let some questionable posts through which is why I still moderate. But generally these are harmless shot comments not obvious spam.

@Ned Carey, thanks for taking the time to comment Ned.

You are correct I also use Akismet to handle my spam and for the most part it does the job, it grabbed something like 1600 spam comments last week and let 3 slip through. Not bad at all in my opinion, for an moderated blog. 8)

Askimet is what I use as well. It’s pretty good, I agree, but those few comments that do slip through still make me keep all comments on moderated status. I find that the ones it doesn’t catch are those stupid fake compliments from “people” who never bothered reading the post in the first place.

Uttoran Sen December 2, 2009 at 10:54 am

Looks like am guilty of many of those points, personally i find that a nofollow comunity is more dedicated and less spamy than a dofollow because too many people like to force up their comments who are not even interested in the post…

comment love, top commentator etc. are always an advantage which i keep on most of my blogs, they are not dofollow but atleast they might send some traffic which makes me feel good.

other points you mentioned are common and i don’t see anyone who would really waste more than a few seconds to see the page load, and a couple of popups are just enough to ensure that its got to be the last visit,

good post over all, re-captcha, blogger blogs etc. are turnoffs too, bloggers should always make it easy for commenting, if they expect some comments to come their way :)

I agree to some of your point. but for the captcha, I think this is a good way to stop spam robot. I think captcha will be annoyed if hard to read and push commenter to re-submit the comment.

Extreme John December 7, 2009 at 9:42 pm

@Ruri @ Free article submission, just speaking from personal experience. I almost always close out a post if there is a CAPTCHA to leave a comment, even if I loved the post I can’t be bothered with the hard to read and annoying CAPTCHA codes. To each is own. :)

The hassles of commenting on Blogger blogs is my largest pet peeve. Now that there are so many great CommentLuv dofollow blogs I’m starting to refine where I spend my time even more and seeking out only dofollow blogs using both CommentLuv and KeywordLuv.

One tip: I have recently come across a very popular blog with visible CommentLuv that has nofollowed all links in their comments. Most never verify whether a site really is dofollow or not which is why I prefer dofollow certified blogs now. One option is the one displayed in my blog and there are others.

I recommend using the free SEOBook Toolbar to instantly see what is dofollow and what isn’t (on most blogs – some block that ability). You don’t have to check all the time – just check to see where your comments provide the most value.

I have Twitter lists for KeywordLuv, dofollow, and Top Commentator anyone can use and follow (use TweepML to make it fast) and a very popular DoFollow Tools and Lists post. Anyone who is truly dofollow and uses those plugins and wants on those lists only has to ask me. (ExtremeJohn is already on them and will be included in all lists I create.)

I really hate to be the person defending blogger but you don’t HAVE to log in unless the owner of the blog clicks registered users only.

Most of them if you hit the drill down thing will give you the option of Name/URL.

I also will not comment if it is too complicated.

My pet peeve are the blogs that come up with a clever phrase and you have to figure out what it is so you know what to click. Instead of Click here to comment, which btw I don’t like doing either, it’ll be share you opinion or something even worse.

@dwippy@dofollow blog list,
“Click here to comment” would be fine but most blogs say “No Comments” until the first comment is posted. Those who are new to reading blogs may interpret that as, no comments allowed.

I edited my theme to make the commenting language clear.

@dwippy@dofollow blog list, Far too many Blogger blogs don’t have that option enabled. If they have Twitter accounts I Tweet at them recommending they turn it on if they want more comments. If they have that option I may comment; if they don’t I rarely waste my time trying to get logged in.
