Last week I posted the first 12 tools that I used to build a viral marketing campaign on Facebook. I’m not real big about splitting my posts in to tow different parts, this might actually be the first time I did it with the exception of my Good, Bad and Very Ugly business review series a few years back.
In any case it’s time to get down to the next twelve tools that I used to build a viral social media campaign for my small business. The entire campaign is built around a special offer we have offering Free tanning until Labor Day. Here’s the rest of the tools I used for this project.
Tools for Small Business Marketing Success
In the same fashion I let everyone know that the tools I use for promoting my small businesses and managing my businesses social media campaigns work great for me. That doesn’t mean that every tool I list will work in your business, but I do hope it challenges you to search for tools that are right for your business, because they are out there.
Nottingham
One of my favorite apps from the Apple App store is Nottingham. Nottingham is a simple text editor that keeps all of my projects in one area. I can’t even begin to tell you how many text documents I had stored on my desktop and in countless folders, everything from ideas to finished projects and historical information. Now, instead of a billion files, I use Nottingham, it keeps everything in one place and it never needs to be saved. Nottingham is $19.99 and a true time saver.
MarketMeSuite
If any of you connect with me on Twitter @ExtremeJohn there’s a good chance that you know by now that the social media manager that I use for my small business and personal brand is MarketMeSuite. I’m very active on Twitter on a personal level and I like to keep tabs on what’s buzzing about my businesses out there. Check out my MarketMeSuite Review for more information about MMS.
PhotoShop Elements
I can’t really take any credit for the quality of graphics that my designer Dawn put together for this project, but I can take credit for?maximizing?my skill set and using PhotoShop Elements to re-size and modify images. A perfect examples would be some of the images used in this post.
Radio Advertising
After this promo kicked off I added radio advertising to our social media campaign. After seeing how quickly excitement levels raised on Facebook and our company website I couldn’t help but add a little fuel to the fire with radio. All though we move from radio station to radio station depending on the promo we’re running at the time, we’ve always dialed Wild 941. Hips and Hip Hop first to summons Alli “That Girl” to the mic. Something we’ve done for over seven years now.
Skype
Not too long ago I wrote about the 6 ways I use Skype in my small business. Since writing that post Skype has become more and more of a control center for my daily operations. Skype allows me to connect, follow up and delegate immediate changes in regards to any promotion that we have going on. Skype played a major part in getting our free tan til Labor Day promo launched on time.
Tumblr
Our Extreme Tan and Smoothies Tumblr is still new, but it is still managing and making connections along the way. As Tumblr continues to explode in popularity it’s only a matter of time before we start to see some nice bonus traffic and exposure with Tumblr. A few updates to Tumblr is all we needed to get the word out, and I tied my Extreme John Tumblr account in to the promotion as well. Again, not huge but still effective in adding to any promotion. Don’t count Tumblr out.
I doubt your surprised to see Twitter on the list, and I’m sure that you get how I used Twitter based on the discussion points above. @ETASFlorida
Ustream
I’m a little premature with adding Ustream to the list since as this point our Ustream is connected to our Facebook Page and our channel is set up. We’ve even gone as far as to schedule the date for our first Live Ustream for Extreme Tan and Smoothies. I’ve hosted Live Ustream events for our Memorial Weekend Extreme parties and a few other things, but never specifically for ETAS customers via the ETAS Ustream.
On Thursday we’re going to attempt to go live on Ustream. The goals include; soft testing Ustream to see how we adapt to it, announce the iPad 2 winner for a recent promotion that we did and hopefully expose a few new faces to our free tanning offer.
WorkForceGrowth
Keeping our associates informed during promotions is always something that’s extremely important to me. We run extreme tanning specials and without the proper communication the losses can add up way too fast. With BackPackIt being our main communication hub for our management team we also need a communication area for everyone at Extreme.
WorkForceGrowth makes it easy to communicate to our associates from anywhere, and it allows us to recognize their excellent job performances to our entire community. Something I feel that’s important when trying to keep things simple across multiple locations.
YouTube
My initial plan was to put together a quick You Tube video that flashed a picture slide promoting the event. I’m not a big fan of leaving our YouTube?subscribers and friends out of the mix. After the contest launched there was a real need for information that helped to direct people to the right area of their Facebook privacy settings to ensure that the tag appeared on our page. It’s never fun frustrating customers and playing the technology game can do that more often then not.
I decided to create the following video which contains a picture slide show as planned and a quick screen cast that directs our customers in the right direction if they’re having trouble using Facebook tags. I did all of this using YouTube’s free video creation functions and Screen-Cast-o-Matic.

Parting Shots
I’m not sure that I really have anything exciting to add at this point. I guess I’ll close out by saying that this project is in it’s 5th day and it’s already contributed to over 300 Facebook “likes”, and 150+ new customers. This doesn’t include our existing VIP Club customers that get to take advantage of a free $44.49 gift card or previous customers that left for whatever reason and returned with this promo in hand.
Your Turn
Im sure there’s another 100 things I could have done to take this promotion to the next level, if you feel there’s anything I missed please feel free to leave a comment. If you don’t have anything to add, feel free to say hey! I respond to all of my comments.

Would like to hear more about the results you get from Tumblr. Their blogging system seems a lot different from the norm – no comments, just likes and “reblogs” and notes. I’ve considered it for something personal, but didn’t think about it helping my main blogging endeavors.

Hi Kristi, perhaps I’ll do a follow up post to this with more of the longer term results.

Hey man, great post and nice list of tools you are using. I have looked at MMS for a while now as I definitely need something to manage all my social media, but it’s something ‘ in the ‘when I have time basket’ at this point.
On a side note, I wanted to share this post, you even tell me not to forget to SHARE SHARE SHARE, but no share buttons?!?!
Better get that sorted man, that’s extreme
Twitter: extremejohn
Haha I removed the share buttons for technical reasons, I am testing a few speed related custom plugins right now and can’t decide on exactly how I want my social media sharing buttons displayed. There’s really no plugin out there that I like and the PageLines theme is a pain to work with, so multiple things going on there. It will be resolved today, hopefully you found a way to SHARE SHARE SHARE with out the handy little social buttons on the page
MMS is a pretty sweet tool, I haven’t stopped using it since I picked up the new version and that’s odd for me. I always tend to go back to HootSuite, all though I still feel HS is the more “complete” social media managers.

Just curious John, have you used any Facebook ads? If so how did it turn out… thinking of implementing it for 360Wilmington to boost a new facebook page for them.

I’ve done my fair share of marketing with Facebook Ads over the last couple of years, it will help to increase page likes and brand awareness and the targeting is excellent. As for the actual physical ROI, eh…

Just finished reading both parts of this. Talk about information packed! I think it is awesome the way you laid out your strategy and the tools you used to get everything moving forward.
Its not often that someone actually takes the time to outline what they did and how they did it; showing all the tools used.
Thanks man! I learned a lot!

My pleasure Tom, thanks for taking the time to read and leave a killer comment. I’ve kept a lot of the things I do and tools I’ve used to do those things under my hat for a lot of years, I’m now finding new enjoyment in sharing that information vs worrying about which of my competitors gets their hands on it. I’m happy you were able to take something away from it.
