5 Ways Blogging Can Kill You

by Extreme John on November 9, 2009 |

Blogging Tips

This one will be short and sweet and to the point for the most part, I mean how much can really be involved when it comes to a post about ways that blogging can kill someone. Seriously who even thinks or cares about these things and why would some idiot Extreme John write a blog post about such a ridiculous topic?

Let’s face it blogging is hardly the healthiest of all activities that a human being can choose to be involved in and it certainly doesn’t require any spicy conversation by any means. As peaceful as your desktop space tomb is if you don’t do something about it your addiction to blogging could eventually kill you, read the list and do something about it and consider it the best blogging tip you had this week.

5 Ways Blogging Can Kill You

  1. Lack of exercise
  2. Lack of social interaction
  3. Poor eating habits
  4. Poor sleeping habits
  5. Stress

I know this is hardly the juicy stuff that you came here for today, but who knows maybe as I sit around and scheme up the next marketing plan or look at new ways to promote small business I will come up with a more useful business tip post or blogging tips post. In the meantime take a second and leave a comment with additional ways that blogging can kill you, I am interested to see what you all have to say about it.

P.s On a side note I wrote a “guest post” over at MMA Punk today check it out if you get a chance, feel free to leave a comment there as MMA Punk is now Do Follow and currently uses the Comment Luv plugin. You can’t really beat Do Follow link juice.

I agree, ever since I started blogging 2.5 months ago I hardly have spare time anymore. And some things are taking a back seat. Because blogging isn’t as easy as we assume. It involves interacting with fellow bloggers. Visiting other blogs and learning the tricks behind blogging so your blog at least can have some visitors.

It can definitely eat up a lot of your time but the way I see it you are investing in the future by working hard on it. Like anything else you have to set time aside for blogging and interacting etc, and when the time is up you HAVE to get up and go do something else.

1. Lack of exercise
2. Lack of social interaction
3. Poor eating habbits
4. Poor sleeping habits
5. Stress

Nah, blogging can be healthy – depends on the topic. Imagine blogging about your marathon training ;)

It’s also very social, in my experience. There was a story in Mashable a few days ago about a new study that shows social media geeks are actually more sociable than average, not less.

@Anne @ b6s.net, hmmmmm. I can see that being a case if they are counting “socialable” as contact through online forms, however there are a tremendous amount of bloggers that never socialize in real situations in public places or at events. Thats whats not healthy.

Writing about a fitness blog is def healthier than sitting around and writing about Wordpress themes, thats for sure :)

Sitting in front of a computer all day, everyday certainly has caused me a loss of health and fitness. You have to actively seek out ways to improve yourself physically. Hence, I train MMA, practice archery and knife-throwing, as well as geeky hobbies like role-playing and Warhammer

@Hard Rocking South African@Music Judge, thats the right way to go about it bro. It’s important for bloggers to find time and work on a non computer related hobby that involves some type of physical activity. It’s healthy for the mind as well as the body, you have some excellent hobbies there.

Though I do take long holidays, it’s not helping.

In my case, blogging have lead me to lack of social interaction with people :-? . I don’t usually move out of the house unless it’s any urgent kind of thing. I am mostly blogging at that time or sitting in front of T.V or might be studying(very rare case) :-P .

Also, When I am blogging, If my mom brings in the dinner or something else then I usually eat it in hurry to take as little time possible…
Sometimes, when my bro is not coming home at night or is coming late then I Stick to chair as late as 5 am.
Once I remained asleep till 5 am  then I realized suddenly that I have to go to school in 2 hrs. Somehow I managed to take sleep of 1hr on that day.

2-Lack of social interaction: Since I still am holding on to my day job, I have no choice but to interact with my co-workers. When I decide to leave my job in pursuit of focused blogging, I’ll see what lack of social interaction will turn me into.

3-Poor eating habits: I still eat at the proper time, thanks to my day job. Will ‘poor eating habit’ make me even more skinny, or make me gain weight. If it makes me gain more weight, I think I’ll add ‘poor eating habits’ in my wish list.

4-Poor sleeping habits:

1. Lack of exercise >Had that problem before I started blogging
2. Lack of social interaction >I have more online friends now then ever, still have day job and see others.
3. Poor eating habbits >Had that problem before and always will
4. Poor sleeping habits > Agreed
5. Stress > I don’t let my blog stress me, but I don’t depend on it for income as I still have a day job. If I did depend on it I would be way stress as I have a to do list a mile long.

I think the biggest challenge with running a blog and running it right is the time commitment which can have a direct impact on all the things above. Running a blog is a lot of work and time period even if you do enjoy it.

Blog sites like wordpress and blogger should carry a health warning! You think that all you have to do is spend a couple of hours a week writing blog posts – and then it becomes a life changing obsession of commenting on other blogs, and stat checking and internet surfing. You sit down to write a post and before you know it several hours have passed and you have added a stack more blogs to your google Reader account!

I think moderation is the key to everything. Don’t blog in excess and you will survive! I’m sure this rules apply for almost every activity that we do. Kids like to play video games and if they could some would do it all day. Now it is our responsibility as conscious human beings to do things in moderation. and if you blog for a living and have to sit at your computer for a long time, take the stairs or park far away so you can at least get some exersice that way. Also try to eat away from your desk. All of this little things will keep you alive. :-P

If there was such a thing as blog police I could have gotten a BUI (blogging under the influence) citation quite a few times. I do not recommend blogging while under the influence to anyone and I dont do it any more.

Some of the people I know still wonder how I keep being alive with so little sleep and food and so much typing and staring to a screen all day long.
Another negative effect of this addictive blogging activity is that you can easily lose any time perception. Something like now it’s monday and it’s weekend already? I would probably need a 72 hours day to be able to complete about 5 percent of what I have in mind in one day.
The body itself struggles to get me with my feet on the ground by sending different types of signals which are in most cases ignored until my head falls on the keyboard. 8-O
I woke up one day (not morning) and when I passed by a mirror I could see the key marks from the keyboard still on my face. When I got back in front of my computer I realized that I have created a huge blog post while I was asleep consisting in one huge almost endless word. I can not remember however if the keyboard felt good as a pillow.

I do not know how my wife handles this situation. I mean she says that I and my computer are “bonded together at a level no human can reach”. She also says I am cheating on her and blames my computer for it. I tried to explain that blogging is serious business and you can not quit just because you got married. You’ve got readers out there.

According to my wife statistics I haven’t moved from my chair for hours: she found me in front of my pc when she came back from work – I was typing. She claims that she asked me if I wanted to eat and i said no. She also does not recall ever seeing me eating in the last days. When she went to bed, i was typing, when she woke up, I was still typing. She put a chair in front of the door to see if I exit the room during the night. It looks like I didn’t, as she found the chair in the exact position the next morning.

When I read a blog page I am sometimes so concentrated that she occasionally checks on me to see why I am not moving. Am I still alive?

When I am working on page code I become so focused that I usually can not hear anything around me. The proof: my wife tried to scare me, she came silently behind me and said “freeze”. I had no reaction. She recognizes that was not a good idea anyway since I already looked frozen.

When friends call they usually say:
“I know you’re busy blogging but would you care for a beer or something?”
“When is the last time you slept, you sound as if you’re drunk or something”

For those of you who dare to think this is not true, I have one more spicy detail: I changed water for coffee. This way my “normal” day is no longer limited to 24 hours.

Cheers.

Blogging can kill you in so many other ways!
These days, when everything is cancerous, I’m sure that the radiation from the computer screen can give you cancer, and the radiation from the internet can give you cancer, and reading about cancer can make you mentally stress and that also gives you cancer.
So, anyway you look at it, you’re doomed…

One thing I would like to say here that blogging is very addictive and once it gets unmanageable then it may lead to serious problems even death. I too have experienced the same in the past. But I learned to have control on my blogging. As an avid blogger myself, I believe that its good to do do each and everything in limit but when you get out of it then please be prepared for the consequences. 8-O Blogging can cause severe health problems like stress and headache. Its better to blog less in my opinion :)

Well, you are right but I am not sure that blogging can kill me. I only consider blogging a tool to improve my writing skills and English then I did not put myself too much pressure :-D

The points are true and I have to agree but another thing is when someone get success in blogging they eventually can avoid those problems. They can then use money power to update their blog and social activity to save sometime and later can use those saved time in real life to better manage their offline activity.

Blogging can certainly cause health problems. I talk an hour long walk every morning specifically to counteract lazy tendencies. I wake at 4:30, meditate, and usually write 1 or 2 post. I then tweet until 8:00. Exercising from 8:00 – 9:00 is mandatory because once it hits midmorning I know that I’ll be online until at least 6-7.

Take care of yourselfs fellower bloggers.

Great list, John :-D

Allow me to add another:
Hours of sitting in front of the laptop can be bad for your eye sight; not to mention how hours of typing can cause “tennis elbow” and can ruin your wrist as well! :high:

The number 1 is so true. We bloggers tend to sit for hours in front of our screens. To counter it, I always play my electric guitar every morning and play futsal every evening so I can get some exercise and sweat ;-)
