9 Must Have Firefox Greasemonkey Scripts

by Extreme John on September 2, 2009 |

As many of you know and some of you are about to find out, I am addicted to Firefox Add-ons and WordPress Plugins for whatever reason these things are addicting to me.

I wrote a post about Firefox add-ons titled “Firefox Add-Ons for Bloggers” that kicked off a look into the different types of add-ons that I currently use on a daily basis, since writing that post I have really spent a good amount of time seeing what I could do specifically with one of the add-ons I use.

firefox-add-ons

I can’t remember who exactly it was or which of my posts that it was in and of course finding it through the search feature is impossible, anyway someone had commented and recommend I give Greasemonkey a try along with one of the user scripts that would help me with one of my issues with Twitter.

Ever since installing the Greasemonkey Firefox Add-on I have been addicted to searching their database of user scripts, now I am going to force you to look over a list of the 10 Best Greasemonkey scripts or at least the ones I recommend.

What is Greasemonkey?

Allows you to customize the way a webpage displays using small bits of JavaScript.

Hundreds of scripts, for a wide variety of popular sites, are already available at http://userscripts.org.

You can write your own scripts, too. Check out http://wiki.greasespot.net/ to get started.

ad-slicer-myspace

1. Ad Slicer for MySpace

Tired of all the annoying ads on MySpace? Need one simple script to remove them all? Then the Ad Slicer for MySpace is the solution you’ve been looking for. Not only does it remove the ads, but it removes the space the ads leave behind, reclaiming all that juicy screen “realestate”!

2. Akismet Auntie Spam for WordPress

With Akismet Auntie Spam I can view 16 to 18 spam comments per screen compared to 3 to 5 spam comments per screen without it. It greatly reduces the time and effort to check my akismet spam inbox for incorrectly marked spam.

3. Facebook Reply Button

Add a reply button to comments, makes responding to multiple comments a snap.

4. Google Enhanced Black v2.9.0

This Google Black script enhances all Google service pages with an inverted color-scheme for reduced eye fatigue; it also removes ads & clutter and improves page layout and readability by widening search results.

5. Twitter Unfollow Buttons

Creates buttons under each posting on your home screen to unfollow users on twitter. Reduces the number of clicks to remove a user from follow list.

6. UnFuck Facebook

Determined to return my Facebook experience to that of the refined social network I had become accustomed to using, I released my first version of UnFuck Facebook in the fall of ’07, just a few months after Facebook released it’s Application Platform. Though the script has been rewrote countless times to accommodate the many changes of Facebook since, to this day UnFuck Facebook remains a radical rethink of how a Facebook page should look.

7. WordPress Catagory Resizer

Moves the category checkbox list from the right sidebar to underneath the edit post windows and makes it three columns wide instead of one column wide. Works with any version of WordPress or WordPress Multi-User (including WordPress.com)

8. WordPress Do Follow Tag Scanner

Informs you if the article you are reading has a Do Follow comment field.

you-tube-greasemonkey

9. You Tube HD Ultimate

This script automatically loads the HQ / HD version of the video on the page without refreshing the whole page, with lots of other little “goodies” for YouTube.

O.k here’s the part where I ramble on about doing the right thing by following me on Twitter or taking a moment to subscribe to my rss feed if you like this kind of stuff, doing so alerts you right away (as if it’s a 911) to my latest updates that way you can come back here and marvel at the amazing ground breaking, life altering blogging tips and stuff I post. Better yet you could just do it because you know you want to, and last but not least so I feel like someone is paying attention to me leave a comment and let me know if you try Greasemonkey or suggest other scripts that can be used with Greasemonkey. Have a productive day!

@DiTesco, I go through mind bursts and can’t control myself, I use to schedule the stuff way out there but than it doesn’t really portray some of the things I am doing currently in my life.

I’m using a plugin for Firefox named NoDoFollow to see which links are dofollow. For some reason I have never really been a fan of Greasemonkey. Tried it twice but stopped using it rather quickly.

@Stefan, I will have to look for that No Dofollow script, I am using the one above but always looking to see what else there is.

To be frank, grease monkey is one of the best add-on to Firefox. I like FF because of grease monkey add-on and few other add-ons. I don’t use it for any of the above reason.

After reading what this can do it sure allows for the average bloggers to free up some time. I guess with this you won’t be needing the DONO follow plug-in I suggested your last article about Firefox add-ons. It’s really to bad you never got to try it. Did you ever end up trying firebug?

@bbrian017, you know I don’t remember you mentioning the No Do Follow plug-in, I did try Fire Bug but honestly had no clue what it really was good for.

@Extreme John, Well you can inspect elements of your website ensure they are codded right, find error and more. I guess it’s more or less a development tool rather than a blogging tool.

I have never tried Greasemonkey, but I am a big fan of Firefox add-ons… so I am definitely going to check some of these out.

I can’t remember the last time I actually went to any MySpace pages, so I probably don’t need that one… but I can see using all the rest. Thanks John for the great list!

I am going to try the Dofollow plugin (getting tired of looking at source code!) The You tube plugin sounds really cool, too. Do these slow down load times?
