Those of you that might be coming through the Extreme John blog for the first time or that have no idea who I am I figured it would be a good idea to give you a quick “catch up” so your not sitting wondering what’s going on. I am the founder of Extreme Tan and Smoothies and Insane Limos in addition to a new business venture that I will be taking on shortly, simply put I’m a business addict. One of my favorite things about being a business addict or entrepreneur is that I have the freedom to do the things I really enjoy doing within my small business, one of those things being the marketing and advertising aspect of each of my business’s.

I wanted to share one of my advertising campaigns with you that recently received the “Disapproved” message from our friends at Facebook, I have been advertising on Facebook for various specials and events within our business for about a year now.

Spray Tan Lines Too Hot for Facebook

Spray Tanning Results

I tweeted the spray tan results picture above on Twitter during the Extreme Tan and Smoothies TV commercial shoot back on April 19th, do you think the picture above is too hot for advertising on Facebook? Leave a comment with your thoughts after you take a moment to read the reasons for the DECLINED Facebook ad below.

Now don’t get me wrong I can see their point in regards to showing too much skin, there is a little bit of “tooshie” hanging out if you want to get all upset about it…. BUTTTTTTT I can’t agree with the fact that the advertising wasn’t relevant to spray tanning as it shows true instant results of an Extreme Tan and Smoothies spray tan.
Looks like I will be heading back to the drawing board later today when I have some free time, maybe I will throw in another picture that shows the advertising is relevant like the one below?

O.k. that’s about it for right now, I’m going to try and get another post up later today with more pictures from the TV Commercial shoot that came in last week from Phantom Photography. I would also like to get some pictures posted from the new project we are working on over at the old Tanning n Smoothies location, it has a fresh new look on the outside and the interior remodel is coming along pretty sweet too.

John, do you have kids? I have two little boys, aged 6 and 8, and I’d be very upset if we had to face that kind of ad while viewing pictures of their new nephew on Facebook.

Seriously, Man. I am no prude and I am all for freedom of speech. Get hardcore porn sites out there if you wish, just keep semi naked butts out of family-friendly sites. There’s a time and place for everything, and facebook isn’t the place for these images, IMO.

@Anne Moss, sorry Anne but your kidding with this right? Yes I do have two kids actually and to put it plain and simple I don’t let either one of them on Facebook. It’s not up to me to police what your kids see or anyone else’s kids see and obviously (based on comments below) everyone has a different opinion about these things. Here is a perfect example, I see people all of the time with their kids as their avatar or as their Facebook picture…. I find that to be one one of the most ridiculous things around, however millions of others love it. I don’t write those people and tell them to change their picture, I ignore the crap and move on.

Here’s something else to consider….. Have you ever been to an island on vacation? Aruba, Jamaica maybe St. Thomas or wherever? If not I suggest when you go that you don’t bring your kids because the reality is that there are plenty of people running around in banana hammocks much smaller than what our spray tan client is wearing. If this image upsets you, vacation to some places with your kids would enrage you.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but “come on man” even bringing up the word porn when comparing or discussing this image couldn’t be more off the wall. It’s a girl in a bathing suit showing her hip tan line….. Nothing more.

@Angela, honestly “Angela” no one is going to take you seriously if you keep posted under 20 different names here, you’ve already been exposed. Check the Dear Chicago comments, then realize just how pathetic you really look and I haven’t even exposed you for who you really are yet. haha 0 credibility.

“or that reveal too much skin, are not permitted.” 8-O I can only say, WTF!

I believe the age requirements for Facebook users is 13 (or is it older?) – I’m not a parent, but at the age of 13, shouldn’t kids already know a little bit about “too much skin”? Well, too much skin is not really a secret, we all have it.

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t find that tooshie picture at all offensive.

@Klaus @ TechPatio, I am right there with you Klaus.. I ahve seen way more speedo’s that are much more violating than the picture above….. WAIT, actually some weirdo woman walked through the parking lot earlier with her belt and front of her pants un-done and her ass crack hanging out. Let’s just say it wasn’t pretty.

I’m not going to step on any toes here! Oh screw it, yes I am, in this day and age, kids see much worse on the news, images of bodies strewn on the floor in some war torn country, children starving and begging for food while the flies buzz around their faces…. And people complain about a tiny bit of skin!

For crying out loud, it’s only skin, we all have it!!!!

Ooo that feels better, makes up for me not doing a Monday Moan on my blog today

When I first had kids I read a lot about how we react to nudity determines how our children will as well. If we find it “dirty” we pass that on, but if we don’t make a big deal we pass that on as well. Now, I know she’s not naked here, but the point is the same. It’s really not a big deal and if we stop making it one then our kids will, too. Besides, who determines what is proper and what is not? What is too much skin and what is not? If only everyone’s butt looked so good. :-?

@Anne Bender, exactly Anne. It’s just like when a child falls, if you make the big “OH NO!!!” panic face you can expect plenty of crying to follow, if you assess the situation and make a rational decision I would be willing to bet there would be no crying. Actually it’s true, we did it with my daughter and she doesn’t ever complain about shit, my son on the other hand will complain about a small bug bite given the chance. Meanwhile he’s twice her age.

Your conversion rate would really suck with that kind of image because most of the boys would click straight up in the ass :)

John,
I read your post about the by Facebook disapproved the add and it makes me laugh really hard. I’m sorry for you have to deal with it but it shows me how prude some people here are sometimes. Gosh, I have a son, by now he is 21 years old and he grew up and still is living in Germany, but even when he was let’s say 7 or 8 years old, he had seen more skin on public adds or tv shows in the early afternoon programs there than what they ever would show here.
And did it hurt him or is he sexual “disturbed”? No it didn’t and he never asked any embarrassing questions or made an embarrassing comments. It’s all about how kids get raised. Nudity never was a subject or “dirty” and as normal as anything else.
Facebook makes me laugh because they disapprove an add like that but at the same time they have no control over what pictures users actually post on their pages. And I have seen pictures posted by people on Facebook they really would make especially younger kids wondering what actually is going on.
But besides of that, I really don’t think that young kids would be interested in Facebook at all. And the a little bit older ones anyway have seen more skin before than what your add shows thanks to the internet.
I’m living here in the US for several years now and I love living here and I am very happy here but I can tell you, sometimes it really makes me LMAO how prude some people are and I bet a lot of exactly those people are the ones they rent or buy the hardcore videos.
So I guess you will have to give your creativity some new room and create an add that is more “family friendly”.

@Rick @Home Decor Accents, thank you for taking the time to leave a great comment Rick I appreciate it and your exactly right, it’s how kids are raised. Raise them to think someone should over react about the picture above, and they will…. for the rest of their lives and for what? Because someone is showing something they also have?

Thanks again Rick and I am happy to hear that you enjoy it here in the US, as awesome as it is.. man can it be funny sometimes.

All valid points everyone has made. I can see both sides.
Facebook has to make a stand and draw the line somewhere.
Its to bad that they are drawing the line here because of
an awesome tan line.
Maybe a small Extreme Tan & Smoothies logo photo-shopped over each cheek would satisfy Facebook. Or if you would like, Sang & I would be willing to hand paint the logo on for you and we can re-shot the pic.

@SafariDave, haha thanks Dave I appreciate it and I respect that Facebook has to draw the line, I am hardly upset about it. It’s business, you try things and move on to try other things some things work and some thing don’t. Either way we always learn ;)

Next picture will be a smaller bikini maybe?

I don’t find this offensive at all I’m not a parent, neither am I above 18, I’m still a dumb little 13 year old and if you show this to anyone of my age they would never be shocked to see this, its just how the world is today and I think all of us should move around with it.

Moreover if you have educated your kids well such things will never harm them.
