Bing Webmaster Toolbox

by Extreme John on July 28, 2009 |

Before I even get started here I need to fire off a quick disclaimer so there is no confusion when anyone reads this, I am not nor do I claim to be a search engine genius or master of Bing. Instead I am just some clown that decided to click around a little bit to see what I might be able to find on Bing.com, you know it’s the new search engine from the Bill Gates team.

Search Engine Bing.com Logo

I was also checking out the front of my site and realized I really don’t have anything useful on the front page and really haven’t written anything useful since my Firefox Add-ons for Bloggers post. I really need to make a habbit of writing about some of the things I do on a daily basis or while I am just running through my Feedly feed reader, some people might find the information I include about blogging, business, blog tips, Twitter and social networking useful.

I am going to make this pretty quick because in all honesty it’s actually very simple to use the Bing Webmaster Toolbox in order to make sure that your blog is crawled by Bing, or better yet the Bing search engine spider. Bing is another widely used search engine, and regardless of how dominant Google might be there are still valued searches that your missing out on if you do not take the time to submit your site to Bing and submit your site map to Bing.

Keep in mind you will be required to have or get a Windows Live ID before you can access the Bing Webmaster Tools or submit your site to Bing to be crawled. You can access the Bing Webmaster Center once you have your Windows Live ID and have signed in, once in you will have access to a Robots.txt validator, http verifier, and a keyword research tool.

Once you are in the Bing Webmaster tools you can manage, verify and submit any of your blogs to Bing in order to be successfully crawled. Please keep in mind that in most cases your site is probably already being crawled by Bing.

To submit your site to Bing:

To request that Bing crawl your site, submit your site’s domain to http://www.bing.com/docs/submit.aspx.

To submit your Sitemap:

To submit an XML-based Sitemap for your site, copy and paste the below URL into the address bar of your browser–be sure to change “www.YourWebAddress.com” to your domain name–and then press ENTER:

http://www.bing.com/webmaster/ping.aspx?sitemap=www.YourWebAddress.com/sitemap.xml

Bing Firefox Add-on

This handy little Firefox Add-on will quickly add Bing search engine to your existing Firefox search box, this add-on makes it fast and easy to make Bing your default search engine provider or your selected search engine of choice. Bing returns very clean and accurate search results, I highly suggest giving Bing a try and this Firefox Addon makes it easy.

I am already seeing excellent results from Bing in my Statpress and have been for a while now, I figured I would share this info with a few of you that might have blogs or websites that you have not submitted to Bing. If you like this type of stuff or have some better input please feel free to leave a comment, or maybe you will take a moment and subsribe to my rss feed… I’m not asking, I’m telling…. Ok asking, can ya? Thanks.

Nice informative post. I was just wondering the other day if I needed to do something for Bing to start searching my site, as I am listed pretty well in Google for “Making Money Online”, but not in Bing. I am going to have to sign-up and submit my site. Thanks for the info John!

@Tech I like the traffic I am seeing from Bing thats for sure.

@Doug chances are your site might already be included in Bing, but it wouldn’t hurt to submit and test your site map, etc. while your there :)

@Benjamin Cip Im glad I was able to help :)

Thanks, I’ve started to get some decent traffic from Bing, but I haven’t gone back and checked out all of their tools. Adding it for my todo list today.

I wonder if we have to re submit if we submitted to windows live in the past…

I don’t really pay attention to any of these search engines. I have added the site map etc… but Google is king truly it’s the best SE referrer that I have going right now.

Google brings me over 400 unique hits per day at blogengage

The search engine from Microsoft right? I’ve read a couple of reviews from co-bloggers and they think that the SERPs results cannot really match Google’s quality.

Bill Gates is an idol of mine, I know he’ll work things out (or his teams will) sooner or later. But as of now, I guess I have to stick with Google.

I have been getting a ton of traffic from Bing lately, and I like the audience that they are sending me. Must be pretty good results.

By the way, will that bing search add-on simply replace my Yahoo search. You heard the news right?

@Mike glad I could add to your list :)

@RW that’s pretty much how I ended up finding out, I wasn’t sure and started searching around.

@Brian I highly doubt that you would need to re-submit to Bing if you have already done it before with Live, just jump in and check out the webmaster tools.

@Christina that’s great news, who can go wrong with some new spiffy Bing traffic :)

@Liane YoungBlogger Hmmm not really sure where that info is coming in, if it’s providing clickable search term results that are beneficial to your site I don’t really see how one could go wrong with receiving Bing search engine traffic.

@John Sullivan I appreciate that bro, but Bing def has it going on way better than I do. It’s nice to hear someone that I learn a tremendous amount of information from say that the place isn’t too shabby. Thank you as always.

@Tycoon Blogger get on it brother, chances are your blogs are already in there, just don’t forget the site map tool :)

@Ruri thank you for taking the time to comment we appreciate it around here :) As for the tools, yes they have additional tools and certainly you can just build your site and let the crawlers come through. I personally like to make sure that my blogs are being crawled by Bing.

@Rob Have I hear what news? It won’t replace your search engine options that are shown in your Firefox browser, instead it will just add an additional option to choose Bing from the search engine’s drop down.

I clicked the drop down and set mine to Bing after installing he Bing official add-on for Firefox and haven’t changed it since. :)

I’m still struggling with Bing. My site is in the top 5 of Google but down in page three of Bing. So as you can imagine I am getting very little traffic from them

Reply

Extreme John August 23, 2009 at 4:17 pm

@Ste@PS3 System, doesn’t completley surprise me since you really can’t work Bing the way you can work Google, or at least not yet.

Ste from PS3 System September 1, 2009 at 2:01 pm

@Extreme John, that’s true but what else could they possibly be using to rank sites, other than inbound link authority?
