Bullshit Bloggers

by Extreme John on July 4, 2009 |

I know Bullshit Bloggers is hardly the most professional or politically correct way to start out an article or address an issue, but than again this is my blog and I can say whatever the hell I want however the hell I want. Yeah exactly, it’s the “It’s my party and I will cry if I want to” concept and with my birthday right around the corner I can get into baby mode if I want to.

All though I have been working online and making money online for ten years now I really haven’t been a “blogger” for that long at all, I transformed my site from the old basic coded html website to the blog format a little over a year ago. I did it mainly because I am constanlty pressed for time and updating my old site design was something I very rarely did because it was too time consuming to do the simplest of tasks.

I guess in reality I really am not a “blogger”, I’m just a guy that wanted the lazy way out and wanted to be able to keep my site updated as opposed to sitting there and listening to my friends and family bitch because I never added new pictures or anything. Now here I am stuck with this crazy blog with more people reading it than I ever imagined, some of my readers surprise me. I will be out at a bar or meeting up with people I haven’t seen in a long time and they will say “I read your blog and it said…..”, it’s honestly still kind of strange to me and has prompted me to write articles like “You read this crap“.

Now I am kind of right back where I started when I had the original html version of the site, I still constantly feel obligated to get an update done and I still wonder if people will like whatever it is that I am putting up. The only major difference is now I am addicted to “blogging” because it includes so much more, I can add plugins and change themes or visit blogs I like or simply bookmark their articles. Doing so many of the things that I enjoy doing with “blogging” I find myself reading A LOT of blogs and doing a ton of searching on Bing and Google.

I remember the first time I started to branch out and read other blogs, I would never leave comments I would just read through the articles and move on. Now there’s a huge process to it, I now open my Feedly RSS feed reader and cruise through tons of articles in a single sitting, the articles I like I now comment on and the articles I really like I retweet and bookmark. In the early stages of reading other blogs I somehow came across Pot Politics which is a blog owned by John Sullivan and as much of a throw off as the blog title might be, John writes some of the best SEO articles I have seen.

John posted an article bitching about how some of the bloggers he dealt with were pretty much useless when it came to networking and growing relationships. There’s not a chance in hell I am going to look for the exact article right now, I’m not in the mood. I remember reading John’s article and thinking, “Really? This is that much of a problem?” not that what John was writing about was something he would even consider a problem but it just felt right at the time.

Now here we are a few months into the “blogger” thing and I know exactly what John was talking about. It’s amazing to me how many bloggers there are out there that claim to be all about sharing “link love” or growing relationships, and how many of them hardly practice the shit that they preach. In short there are all kinds of bloggers out there that constantly scream how they want to share the link love and the commentluv or grow their twitter networks just so you will write about, retweet and share their articles. They of course don’t follow or hold up to some of their cute little promises that so many people seem to fall for, which of course benefits the Bullshit Blogger right from go.

I have written about other blogs on here numerous times, I enjoy sharing the articles and things I find throughout the web and who knows maybe others enjoy it too. If I decided to comment on an article I am going to do it because I like it, not because I have some silly dream that you will do the same or because I want something in return. Oh and I could give two shits what your Google PR is.

Now that I have been doing this for a longer period of time I have gotten to the point of John Sullivan where I want to write about the Bullshit Bloggers that claim to share link love, linkbacks, tweets and whatever else. I have actually been considering writing a new piece each week where I list a few of the Bullshit Bloggers that I have come accross during the course of the week or month. The Bullshit Bloggers wouldn’t really like it, however the bloggers that are looking to grow their network will appreciate not wasting their time trying to build networks that only include half of the network people, you.

I won’t try to sell you anything here, I may not be a pro blogger or politically correct but one thing I am certain I am not is a Bullshit Blogger. If you leave a comment here, I visit your blog, if I like said blog I comment on it. Seems simple, if you leave two comments here I will visit your blog and try to leave two comments as well. I never liked the thought of anyone saying I owed them anything, I would rather people owe me than to owe. It’s my nature, if you add a link to Extreme John in your blog roll I will add one to my site as well. If you retweet my tweets, I will retweet your tweets. So simple, sadly so many “pro bloggers” and “bloggers” don’t get.

Since I always feel it’s important to end off in a positive note, there are some excellent bloggers out there that work hard daily at growing their network or at least just good hearted people out there that look to return the gesture. Let’s take a look at a few of the good bloggers/people out there that know how to get down, oh yeah and they do it without the big Bullshit Blogger promises which makes the relationship even better.

  1. The Constant Complainer
  2. Keg of Wisdom
  3. EzyBlogger

Check out the good peeps above and let me know what you think, should I list some Bullshit Bloggers?

Damn, when I saw your title I was sure that my Load Of Bullshit would suit the bill and then I noticed you were talking about bloggers and blogs as such. Still, I couldn’t resist plugging my blog while I was at it.

I’m like you though John, I like to give as much as I get, both in the good and bad departments. OH, there is a link coming your way as well.

Well, I had to stop by to see what the rant was about, since Sire popped it onto Twitter.

Of course, the problem with outing folks you may think are phony, so to speak, is that you never really know their life, or what they’re kind of up against. For instance, lots of folks bust on Darren Rowse for not responding to that many comments on his blog, but look at the volume he gets. If he tried to respond to all those folks, he wouldn’t have time for a business. I will say, though, that I’m one of the few people he’s ever responded to, but I guess he felt he had to.

Course, now you know you’re going to have to add Sire to your good list up there; he certainly answers every person who writes on his blog, including spammers! :)

I’m with you bro.

I’ve never tried to be a problogger or the blogging gurus but I’m trying to be a BETTER blogger by learning and reading from the pros.

I have much improved since I started in 2007 and glad that I make the right decision to be a fulltime blogger.

But the best thing about working online is the people I meet “online” and be friends with…

You are one of those GREAT friends I found bro…and yes.. you are a GREAT blogger :)

@Mitch you have a very good point there, I think the ones that piss me off are the ones that boast how they share the “luv”. If you have no intention of doing it you shouldn’t say that you do ya know.

As for Sire, he’s a slacker. Haha just kidding, yeah there’s no doubt that he does a great job commenting back on his blog. I will be sure to include him in my next Bullshit Bloggers post.

Wow I don’t know if that was one of the best post I ever read because I’m honored to be mentioned in it or the pure off the cuff passion that was incorporated. I somehow feel like you have now lost your bloginity. Most people would of already quit. But since your not a quitter welcome aboard.
What’s exciting is that we are now on the tail end of this mode of blogging. Next stop is the LIVE PORTAL which is coming soon. Dude the new design header etc is simply awesome.
As far as what other bloggers do and don’t do..It used to really irk me but now I’m fortunate enough to have some people to keep me focused on plowing ahead. Thank God blogging is not as easy as we think. When it’s done only the KINGS and Queens will be left see you there.

YES! List some bullshit bloggers. The title of this post just was calling me to read it. I am more than happy to exchange links with people that really want to network. (Not those people only looking for a link exchange) People I can talk to about blogging and marketing throughout the week.

I have no problem networking with new bloggers as well. I have a passion for helping people and I really get sick of people saying they want to help when they really just looking out for themselves.

Sorry for the long comment but please do list the bullshit bloggers.

I try to reply to all comments on my blog and I try and make the rounds whenever possible – same with twitter. It’s the only way to really build a community but some folks just do not get it. I’ll give someone a chance for a while but I like to get recip stuff – it doesn’t have to be blow for blow, but a little participation would be nice.

Cheers

I have to agree, there are lots of bloggers out there that do not practice what they preach, because they consider their advice for beginners, and once you reach the “pro” stage you no longer need to follow that advice.

I have to admit though, there is a balance between producing super content and interacting with everyone. I am way behind in commenting & responses, and although I am trying to keep up with RT’s and stumbling, I am slacking on that as well. I’m also in the middle of producing portfolio, working on 3 freelance projects, trying to maintain quality content on my own sites, all while having a full time job.

Hopefully some of that will get under control soon and I will get more time to get back to commenting, and I will definitely make the effort to. But at the same time, I know that my “absence” in that arena may make me look like one of those bloggers who doesn’t care about their audience. I hope not, but that is one of my big worries at the moment.

@Deneil Merritt Sorry for the long comment? Are you kidding me! Let it go man, one visit to your blog and you know that what you say is true. I may not list them simply out of respect for other bloggers and whatever their situation might be.

@Tumblemoose yeah it’s not like anyone is saying be the ultimate commenting champion but a run by wouldn’t hurt anyone. I know for me it’s a great way to learn things, I visit the sites of people that comment here. I appreciate you leaving a comment.

@Kikolani I think that presents a great perspective for others to consider, I have to be honest here when I say that I could not even imagine going through the comments that you get. I only have a few and it can take forever to get through some nights.

You have a loyal following Kristi and you present yourself in a really kind way on your blog, people enjoy you there and will continue to visit regardless of the other things that have you tied up. I appreciate you taking the time to stop by and comment.

Thanks John for giving a name to those you describe as “Bullshit Bloggers” I have trying to categorize these types of bloggers for a while now, those who talk about going out and networking their blog, linking, commenting, then never doing it.

But then their are people like me. I spent 3 years building the infrastructure of my network while holding down a full time job. Endless nights of learning about WordPress, successful blogging techniques and coming up with keyword loaded, but relevant content on a regular basis. Thank G I like to write!

So here I am 3 years later with a network of some 80 sites consisting of blogs, directories, stores, and landing pages. These are not free blogs but are custom templates that I developed with a web master. All the sites built using best practices, nothing spammy, no shortcuts and no traffic!

I have discovered that what I learned about blogging during those 3 years is now more valuable than the actual network I built. Go figure.

Sorry to ramble, my point in commenting here is that bloggers need to learn how to network, grow relationships, comment, linkluv, retweet, etc. I am learning more every day thanks to blogs like yours but I was so tied up in managing my network I lost sight of that aspect of blogging or didn’t know it existed, like you, in the early days I would read an article on a blog only to see what other bloggers were doing and then leave the site without comment. Now I know better.

Don’t sweat the cursing? There’s something I find quite attractive about cursing. LMAO. I curse too but only when I’m mighty frustrated.

I’ve seen quite a few of them who claim to share linklove through dofollow links BUT never do. They simply assume that most commentators don’t know how to check dofollow on a site.

On average, I comment on dofollow blogs to get backlinks BUT only when I’ve got something truly useful to say. As well I comment on nofollow blogs if the post catches my fancy and I like the way the blogger presents himself/herself.

I believe in sharing the love. I truly do and that’s why I even allow certain commentators on my blog to use their choice of keywords rather than follow my comment policy and I link out freely to whosoever deserves it.
I’m not saying I’m not a bullshit blogger as opinions vary. I’m saying that I do my very best not be a bullshit blogger.

If I had an internet connection at home, I’d probably be retweeting loads of posts but unfortunately that ain’t the case. I so my browsing at the cybercafe so there’s very little retweeting that I can handle.
