Coconuts Don’t Be Nuts

by Extreme John on May 5, 2009 |

This would almost be the story of David vs Goliath if we were writing novels or producing some big time movie, instead we have a situation that seems more like a page out of my book. This particular book of mine constantly has pages being ripped out of it by competitors looking to do the very same things that we do in business. I really can’t bitch and complain about it happening, I mean I have always been an open minded business person willing to help anyone. I have even been known to help my competition when they take a professional approach to discussing business related topics with me.

Many business owners would refrain from giving out ideas or help to their competitors where in fact it never really bothered me, I worry about and what we need to do…. I don’t worry about every other tanning salon or limousine business and what their doing, my main focus always has been what we are doing next, never what someone else has already done. I guess in short, you can rip the ideas and concepts but you can’t be inside of my mind to see my vision.

Now with the above being said it seems as if one of my competitors has decided to take a direct approach at targeting our indoor tanning customers. This particular tanning salon is right down the street from our first Extreme Tan and Smoothies location which was established in April 2004. This tanning salon owner has been placing flyers with special offers on the windshields of cars in at least two of our locations parking lots, and on numerous occasions. I solute the effort, I mean what better way to get new tanners than from your competitors parking lot.

I can’t really blame the salon owner for trying to drive their business, I mean after all it is their business and at their best interest to increase that business by whatever means they seem fit. I love marketing, business and all aspects of the gorilla marketing approach that I so often use. I also love a little friendly competition, which is exactly why I refrained from my first retaliation… There was nothing friendly about it. I actually laughed it off when I first received news that they were putting flyers on the cars in our Seminole Extreme Tan and Smoothies location parking lot, however my competative edge started to take over. I controlled myself and within a few days I had received news that they did it again at our Seminole location and have since been doing it at our Largo location.

I guess now I am at a point where it won’t be long before I am taking the gloves off and responding to the tactics of this particular competitor. I know your there, we don’t hunt your customers the way your hunting ours and thats ok, god knows I have hunted other tanning salons customers before. I will continue to be patient and display a little more class for the time being, if what I consider the direct assault on my customers continues my patience will quickly run out. Just for the record in over 5 Years of Business Extreme Tan and Smoothies has never directly gone after a competitor without the competitor starting first (we are classy like that). Keep kicking the Lion and sooner or later the Lion will respond. Leave a Comment, share some retaliation ideas or tell me why I shouldn’t be bothered.

P.S. Extreme Tan and Smoothies has a 10% Match and Beat Price Gaurantee on all indoor tanning packages, airbrush spray tanning packages and indoor tanning lotions. Extreme Tan and Smoothies will Match and BEAT any Competitors Advertised price by 10%. Period. Bring it on a flyer you found on your windshield, front door, newspaper or anywhere else and one of our Extreme Tan and Smoothies associates will gladly Match and Beat that offer. Boooyaka!

@Lace yeah maybe it’s the economy, maybe it’s just good old fashioned competition the way it should be without all of the political bs.
