Colorado Altitude Sickness

by Extreme John on February 3, 2009 |

I will get right down to the basics of Altitude Sickness, evidently something that is pretty come on when it comes to traveling to Colorado….. It sucks. The night before we were leaving for Colorado I was speaking to the young lady that owns the house we rented for our trip to Breckenridge Colorado and she had asked me if anyone had told me about Altitude Sickness. By this point no one had mentioned anything about this Altitude sickness which really thrilled the shit out of me that I was hearing about it the night before we were suppose to leave for Colorado. I will post the actual definition and symptoms of Altitude Sickness below but I think it’s important for everyone to know that if your planning a trip to Colorado do yourself a favor and get a prescription for this stuff you take a couple of days before you head to your High Altitude destination.

ej-camera-look.jpg The Altitude Sickness hit everyone almost as soon as we got up to the house we rented, everyone had something different going on and the symptoms ranged from my Headache to others shortness of breath right down to my Daughter’s heart racing, shortness of breath and a very pale sick look on her face, which prompted me to call a mobile Doctor in Breckenridge Colorado. I was pretty excited to be able to find a mobile Doctor that would make a house call because honestly, I didn’t feel like spending the entire vacation in the ER or some walk in clinic in Colorado. The Dr. I was able to get in touch with was Dr. David Grey (970)-389-7999 who was nice enough to come out to where we were up in the mountains and take a look at everyone, especially my Daughter who was hit with the Altitude sickness the worst.

The Doctor came out and checked everyone’s heart rate and Oxygen levels, it seems the biggest issue with Altitude Sickness is the difference in the Oxygen levels that we are normally use to breathing. Dr. David Grey the mobile doctor in Breckenridge Colorado was ready to go with two Oxygen tanks which my Daughter had to use almost constantly the first couple of days, but it was amazing what a difference the oxygen made for her, I could see her color come back almost instantly. They need to build these vacation homes in Colorado with Oxygen being pumped right into them so it’s easier for everyone to make  the transition from lower altitudes to higher altitudes. Walking up a flight of stairs will rip the air right out of you, and I dont mean a huge flight of stairs, I mean a flight of stairs like the stairs walking up to the main entrance to your house. Imagine walking up hill in snow….. It’s something else.

I really never got rid of my headache which is another symptom of Altitude sickness, someone mentioned that your brain swells when you get up to those altitude levels and your not use to it, and said it’s common even for people that live in Colorado to experience Altitude sickness when they come up from the “beaches” and lakes in the summertime. Bottom line Breckenridge Colorado is probably the nicest place I have ever been to in my entire life, don’t get me wrong I still have my love for Aruba, Jamaica, Las Vegas, Miami, Hollywood, and even Orlando Florida, but I can honestly say that none of my previous travel experiences were anything like this trip to Breckenridge Colorado, even with the Altitude sickness. It won’t be long before I am back in Breckenridge Colorado and I can assure you I will be much better prepared for the change in altitude and I can also ensure you that the next time I go it will be for at least two weeks. I would like to say a special thanks to Dr. David Grey for his help and if your ever looking for an excellent mobile Doctor in Breckenridge Colorado than Dr. David Gray is the right choice.

In a few days we are driving up to Colorado for a 2 week vacation. We’re going to be staying in a mountain cabin near Pikes Peak and I actually just found out that the cabin sits at about 9500 ft. We are also planning to drive up to the summit of Pikes Peak (14,000 ft). Is it likely that we will experience altitude sickness? I sure don’t want the trip to be ruined by bad headaches. I’ve read about the symptoms, but approx what percentage of people experience it?

Can’t believe your giving Colorado more cred than Aruba, Jamaica, The Islands. That’s too much cold air for me. I wouldn’t mind the altitude as much as I would the cold.
