Do Follow Wordpress Plugin vs Lucias Linky Luv Plugin

Do Follow Wordpress Plugins

Yes the Do Follow King has decided to make a few changes around here in regards to how Do Follow link juice is paid back to the people and great bloggers that are nice enough to take the time to leave comments here. Just for the record I hardly consider myself the Do Follow King but John Sullivan from Pot Politics referred to me as the king, I figured if the REAL Do Follow king wants to call me that I’ll roll with it. Not to mention I had no clue what the hell Do Follow and No Do Follow meant until I stumbled on to John’s blog, a must read btw.

Now lately I have been killing most of you with way too much information about DoFollow blogs and the differences between having a Do Follow Blog vs No Do Follow blog, as many of you know that post sparked my “10 Reasons I Wouldn’t Copy Your Article” post. Anyway, I don’t want to spend a tremendous amount of time trying to explain the differences between having a Do Follow blog vs having a No Do Follow Blog (Wordpress default), you can search my custom Google search box for plenty of Do follow info.

I have made a few changes to how the Do Follow links on my site work, I wanted to take a few minutes to explain the changes and what this means for those of you that are nice enough to leave a comment here on my blog, no worries you will still get plenty of Do Follow backlinks from the comments you leave on this Google Page Rank 4 blog.

I know the bloggers that hate do follow and prefer no do follow are just dieing for me to say that I am making my changes because of all the terrible spam I get and how I can’t handle the blog spam anymore, sorry to upset you, spam has nothing to do with it. Sure I get plenty of spam comments here on Extreme John.com, it doesn’t bother me because I use the Akismet plugin that catches most of it without me having to lift a finger and when I say most of it I mean like 99% of it.

My Do Follow Wordpress Plugin Changes

I previously used the Do Follow 4.0 Wordpress plugin to make all comment author links do follow, the plugin really is simple to install and handles the job of making links do follow perfectly. One of the things that grew old to me with this plugin was the hit and run comment droppers that simply and the Google Page Rank and backlink and hardly add anything to any conversation here, I want relevant comments not a huge comment count filled with backlink spammers.

I think it’s pretty safe to say that the dedicated contributors to this blog can appreciate cleaning out some of the pointless comments and dirt that come through from time to time. Thanks to my good friend Karen (@rembeatz on twitter) from Blazing Minds I learned of the “Lucia’s Linky Luv Wordpress Plugin“, this plugin has a few options that make it easy for me to set some do follow “rules” that make me a little more comfortable with how link juice and backlinks are distributed to commenters here.

Lucia’s Linky Luv Do Follow Wordpress Plugin

lucias-linky-luv-do-follow-plugin

My screen cap crap above shows some of the settings that Lucia’s Linky Luv offers, as you can see based on the settings I have in place comment author links will remain no do follow or no follow until the author leaves their third comment, at which point they will receive full link juice from my blog to their blog.

Those of you that are lost at this point can probably stick to the Do Follow 4.0 plugin that I mentioned above, it will make your Wordpress blog a Do Follow blog as soon as you activate the plugin and you don’t have to sweat the settings. If you know what I am talking about and followed along through my banter and you want to make your Wordpress blog a dofollow blog and have some control over the link juice that you pass on to your contributors the Lucia’s Linky Luv plugin would be the right call for you.

So much for making this quick. Sorry for the weird title on this one, when I first started writing the post it was suppose to be about this blog switching to the Linky Luv plugin, then I decided to explain the differences between the two. Either way now you have two different Do Follow wordpress plugins to choose from, they are excellent plugins that are very simple to install and get the job done without hassle.

If you use any of the above Wordpress plugins or your considering making the switch to do follow blogging, leave a comment and share your thoughts or feel free to ask a question. Thanks for checking out the post, if you think you can handle hearing any more from  me at this point consider becoming a fane of my Facebook Fan Page or follow me on twitter, my username is @extremejohn.

@Extreme John, Really? Well I use a different dofillow plugin, one that makes all comments dofollow, and although this may lead to more spam comments I take great pleasure in spamming them rather than just deleting them. Spamming a comment notifies Akismet that they’re spam so that Akismet is able to pick them up as such the next time around.

It’s not a half bad plug-in, from what I hear. I have noticed the new wave of “drive-by” spammers will make about comments on several posts at a time. I’m not saying that anyone who does that is a spammer, but I have had some commenters visit my site just once, and make really strange comments that have nothing to do with any of my posts, and they will hit about 5 – 10 posts in one visit. I notice this plug-in has some control of that kind of spamming in the last option.

Todd Morris (5 comments.) December 26, 2009 at 11:42 pm

Over the years, I’ve gone back and forth with these do-follow plugins. LinkyLuv is probably one of the better concepts … although, as has been pointed out, it’s still possible to game the system. One thing that has definitely happened by being on a few of those “dofollow” lists (even though my blog is technically not 100% dofollow at the moment) is that I’ve become much more cynical about comments. Like Sire, I have a very quick trigger finger when it comes to Akismet … if I don’t know someone, and they leave a keyword anchored comment that links to a “commercial” type site, I usually just assume they’re a spammer.

I may be in the minority, but I really don’t care about comments that much. I figure if I write interesting articles, that inspire conversation, comments will naturally come. But if they only comments I’m getting are from people who’s primary purpose in coming to my site is to get a followed link … I’d just as soon they not bother.

@Todd Morris, every blog and blogger is different when it comes to comments and how important they are, I recently wrote a post showing the two sides. I have blogs I know I don’t want comments on and I have this blog and MMA Punk.com which we enjoy interacting and commenting with others.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment, It’s always appreciated.

I switched over to do follow a few weeks ago, but I don’t advertise. I also tend to follow people on twitter and in RSS once they leave a couple of high quality comments.

Commercial backlinks don’t bother me too much, as long as the commenter leaves a real name, and they’re really working on an honest business.

I’ll keep it in mind if I see a reason to use it but lately all my comments (approved ones :) have been from some cool people. I can see a little triangle working with you and Kristi giving me some awesome props. Sadly I found the small notion that it may be possible to add a dofollow comment still drags in those dirty link trawlers…. But Lucia’s did cut it down a bit and the control it gives is awesome.

I never comment just for a link but none the less appreciate links very much :)

I actually considered using that plugin when I built my latest 2 sites and wanted to become a part of the “do-follow” family, but decided that in the beginning I wouldn’t get enough comments for it to matter and wanted to encourage the comments NOW. I also use Akismet, but have found that I have to check it frequently because it caught a couple of your comments last week (are you spamming my site for link love?)

For now I will keep mine the same, but will consider change if the one-timers get out of control….

I’ve installed it on on of my blogs, but I don’t think I’ll switch over on my main blog. If someone adds a meaningful comment and has a decent link back to their site, I’m fine with is. If it’s a spam comment, out the window it goes. Bottom line, if the link is good enough to be on my page and good enough for my readers to be exposed to, I don’t worry about the linkjuice.

At the same time, I installed thank me later plugin and told them , Hey thanks for the comment, if you want do follow come back and visit and leave me a good comment. I may write a post about this soon and of course will credit you with sparking the idea..BTW, I will be featuring this post later today in my Sunday’s Best post.

But that plugin stoped working awhile ago (with new versions of WP). I keep looking for another plugin that will let me do that but have not found one. Does anyone know of one?

Before I even heard of CommentLuv, I have already been using Lucia’s Linky Love plugin. It proved to be really effective at discouraging drop-by spammers. I also set it to 3 comments before the ‘dofollow’ status kicks in.

There was a time when I noticed your comment, John, on one of my posts, being ‘no follow’. Then I saw that you have inputted your name as ‘Extreme John’ (with a space) instead of the usual ‘ExtremeJohn’ or ‘extremejohn’.
