Many online businesses have seen the rewards of blogging. If you know the secrets to successful blogging, your blog can easily attract new visitors and keep them interested enough to become regular customers, as well as active promoters. There are some mistakes bloggers unknowingly make, which hinders them from reaching their goals. Take a look at the dos and don’ts to successful blogging and maximize the potential of your blog.

DON’T: Make your blog your press center. Many people make the mistake of treating their blogs like a press release center. Blogs should always carry a conversational tone as it serves as a medium to connect with potential customers on a more personal level. If people want to look for press releases, they can just as easily visit press release sites. They wouldn’t bother looking at blogs.

DO: For people to follow your blog, come up with interesting articles related to your industry. They can include your personal experiences and insights, some announcements about company events, or tips – but make sure you use a more casual tone. Write about the latest news related to your products or services.

DON’T: Take too long to update your blog and put in low quality information. There may be some blogs that you follow and frequently visit. One thing that anyone can notice about today’s most successful blogs is that they update content twice a week at the very least. Also, if you are just putting up hard-sell content, readers will lose interest right away. Don’t just copy articles from other sites or plagiarize.

DO: Set a fixed schedule for when you will update your blog and stick to that schedule. Plan your topics ahead of time so you would not suddenly find yourself staring at the blank screen when it’s time to do updates. Make sure that your blog supports an organized and unified manner of presenting information. It also helps to observe and see what rival blogs do. You can enlist other people to write for your blog.

DON’T: Close the comment box. You may be doing this for fear of criticism but comments are a good way to engage your customers in conversation. You have nothing to fear about negative comments – they help you improve and learn. If you are sincere, people will think twice about discrediting you.

DO: Develop a blogging brand or personality. Encourage customer responses and participate actively in discussions. Always be polite and helpful and before long, you have built a community of people with same interests within your blog. You can also visit other related blogs and drop quality comments as well. Get people interested in what you have to say and they will surely visit your blog.

Once people get to know you as someone who is ready to assist and not just a business entity with the goal to rip them off, they will give you good feedback and tell their friends about your products or services.

DON’T: Make your content hard to find. Internet users search the Internet for helpful information. They will not be able to see what you have to offer if they can’t find your blog in the first place. It also helps to make sure you update regular visitors each time you update.

DO: If you are doing a business blog, link its URL to your corporate site. Include the blog address in your email signatures, business cards, profile pages, status messages, and sales collateral’s. Enable users to subscribe to your blog through RSS feeds.

Make use of micro-blogs like Twitter and social media sites like Facebook to tell people about your blog and keep them updated. Such medium make it easy for other people to share your updates with their respective networks. Also, know what search engine optimization is and use it. In a nutshell, it entails putting in keywords in within your content, in your URL, and meta-tags to make your blog more searchable on search engines.

DON’T: Give up easily. The success of your blog will not happen overnight. You will feel like you have no audience at all for the first few months. This is the reason why many bloggers give up too soon. Don’t expect to see returns immediately after the launch of your blog.

DO: Work hard and be consistent. Keep in mind the tips provided in this article then give it at least a year of updating regularly and publishing quality content. Do not make it hard for potential readers to find your blog and share it with others.

At the end I would say that, it’s difficult to remember and follow these Do’s & Don’ts every time(even I forget few of them sometimes). But if you are able to follow them strictly then you will see great success with your blogs.

Very good points, I also have an online fence products store that I blog on, and find it difficult to update regularly. I have been blogging on that topic for almost 2yrs and it is getting boring to me, but I know from past sites that it will benefit me in the end.

Great list of Do’s and Don’ts though….

It is a whole lot easier to follow the post is they are all do’s or all don’t's. Especially if you’ve been enjoying holiday spirits! :-D I had to read it twice. It made a lot more sense the second time through.

I really like the part of not giving up. Quitting is the only sure-fire way to fail.

Good advice for business blogs. I try and tell my clients that just posting clips of news from other sites is not the way to go. To me there are two types of blogs: News blogs, and expert blogs. Any business blog should be more of an expert blog rather than a news blog.

One a side note- what was all that fuss about the DoFollow post? I made a post as well, right after I read your post. I did not “steal” the idea just because I posted on the same topic. What, does that kid think he came up with the topic himself? “-)
Again, good post. peace

As for the #1 don’t – if I’m doing new things and wish my readers to know of them, I shouldn’t blog it?

When you mentioned Press Releases, that reminded me of news articles. I do a weekly recap of coffee news. It wasn’t getting too much traction when I just did a summary of the news. Now, that I give my opinion, it gets a lot more reads and comments.

Great tips overall! Really gave me some tips to use.

Blogging can be a great way of earning money and expressing your opinion. But the key is to try and write about something you’re interested in so that you dont run out of content ideas!
