Dumb Spam Comments

by Extreme John on July 5, 2009 |

I really have no clue how to start this article which is probably fitting since the articles title does include the word “dumb”. Since I am stuck in dumb mode I will make this a quickie, here’s a few of the Dumb Spam Comments I have recieved either in my spam folder or that I needed to edit out of my approved comments section. Leave a comment and let me know which one is the dumbest comment of them all.

Moron: How I make $5,000 a month posting links on google
Post: My CommentLuv Project
I.P: 173.1.61.67

The last one is interesting because I have seen this same commenter on other blogs I visit like Keg of Wisdom, using a different name of course. This caused me to look a little further into the commenter, who I also noticed used a different name to post on The Star Celeb as well. I respect taking advantage of great WordPress plugins like KeywordLuv but there is always a chance for a spammy KeywordLuv comment, this in my opinion is one of those times as the commentators KeywordLuv was “How I Make $5000 a Month Posting Links on Google“, any webmaster knows that there’s no need for that much text in a KeywordLuv situation.

One of the other things I look for when going through my spam section is Avatars or Gravatars that simply don’t make sense, this again is another one of those situations. It wouldn’t make much sense for someone like myself with the domain name “Extreme John.com” to use a Gravatar or Avatar that is clearly the face of a woman, and not some slouch, a hot chick and maybe even one you might recognize like Avril Lavigne. The Avatar bellow looks much more like Avril Lavigne than it does some dude named “Mike”.

Needless to say I won’t be approving any more comments from “How I make billions by posting links on google”, the site content doesn’t make sense and it doesn’t help seeing a carbon copy of the comments he/she/it left here on other blogs.

Tools that you can use on your WordPress Blog to fight spam

  1. Akismet 2.2.4
  2. WP-Spam Free Anti-Spam
  3. Defensio – WordPress Anti-Spam

Either way you can use the best spam filters and wordpress anti spam plugins available, regardless you will still be forced to deal with spam from time to time on your wordpress blog. Also don’t make the mistake that so many other bloggers make by not going through your Comment Spam before actually deleting them, as I mentioned in this article you can miss out on some excellent comments or even commentors by deleting their misplaced comments.

Have these spammers got nothing else to do, yes I know it’s great to maybe advertise your website via other sites, but come on… There’s a right place and time for everything, I get quite a few myself, they target certain words and then send out the bots! Oh they make me so MAD…

Every blog gets lots of spam, but I’ve noticed that you get a lot more that’s either done by a smart bot/or humans who’s first language isn’t English. Do you think that you get more spammers because you use comment love/do follow?

@Karen hey I look at it like this, the comments make me laugh and I get to post about it so others will hopefully get a laugh out of the dumb spam comments that bloggers get.

@Mike without a doubt being a DoFollow blog increases the spam comments a fair amount. I will say that only after the last Google PR update did it really jump, I was averaging maybe one a day at best. Now I get something like 15 spam comments a day. All of which get filtered by Askimet, every once and a while as you know you have one that sneaks through.

I once had a spammer visit who wrote a drive-by thanks, and included information about how to buy live, hatching dinosaur eggs from his website. Only $400, shipping included!

Maybe you would get more intelligent comments if you took the time to use correct grammar and spelling. But what can you expect from someone selling limos and tanning – your target market must be the most superficial, shallow people in the world.

Very funny and great idea for a post. This is a creative way to create value out of your spam instead of just deleting it.

@RW so did you buy the eggs? ;)

@smartguy or more like @dumbfuck pretty funny that the best thing you can come up with is a jab at how I write, read a little further into the blog dumb ass I have never gave two shits about my spelling or anything else on here. You also show how much of a “smartguy” you are, since your so smart explain to me how comments from spammers is relevant to the article content, fuckin idiot.

Spammers are spammers you jack ass, the content type couldn’t matter any less.

@TycoonBlogger hey it was good filler, not to mention it got a moron to join the conversation, proof that it worked great. ;)

@smartguy oh yeah the Limo and Tanning thing is pretty funny, because people renting high quality exotic limos (something I doubt you have ever experienced) and because people choose to tan it means they aren’t an intelligent target market? Back to shoveling shit moron.

Yeah, I guess you’re right. They might have skin cancer, but at least they can say they were tan when they spent the evening in that super-classy pink 30-foot Hummer. They must be real important to have life goals like that.

Maybe that’s who you attract when you don’t give two shits about your spelling or grammar. Psychologically, it’s interesting – you’re too stupid to even know that you’re stupid, even though everyone around you has already known it for a long time.

Spam is completely pointless but most spammers use software to do all the spamming for them. It makes them money. Sad but true. I wish I could block all spam from my blog but we all know that’s not going to happen.

A few days ago I looked at the spam on my blog and I was surprised to see how much the word press spam plug in got. Pages and Pages of spam I couldn’t even go look at it all there was just too much.

Could some spam be real comments?

LOL- these are kinda hilarious! I know it’s annoying, but people just crack me up. I wonder if comment spamming works at all- I mean, there has to be a reason why they keep doing it?!
I don’t get a lot of spam, thankfully, and I’ve never had a spam comment get through my filters. But I have been dumb enough not to check for valid comments often enough!

@Smartguy this is getting pretty exciting, I love it when “Book smart” morons attempt to discuss things they know nothing about. Whats worse Mr. Professor? The fact that I at least know what the fuck Im talking about when I talk and don’t spell or write shit to your liking? Or perhaps it’s better to be able to write with proper grammar such as yourself, but be a clueless moron instead. Here’s some facts pee wee, you can take the facts and shove them up your ass with your proper grammar.

Fact 1: You know nothing about Spam comments, you clearly showed that above with your moronic first comment.

Fact 2: The Pink Hummer is actually 34′ long not 30′ long, again no clue what your talking about.

Fact 3: Your assumptions that people that choose a safe alternative to outdoor tanning by tanning inside having skin cancer shows entirely how fucking dumb you really are.

Hey to reach his own, I will be the guy that at least comments and discusses things that I actually have knowledge on. You on the other hand can be the useless wart on the ass of society that runs around getting worked up into a lather and discussing topics that you have no knowledge of. Certainly sounds like your a “Smart Guy” to me.

Or wait I have an even better idea, since your such a wonderful writer and your grammar is always perfect, and you obviously have so much knowledge about everything, I think it would be a shame for the world to miss out on everything you have to offer. Now I am sure you haven’t figured out how to actually get on, use or maintain a blog so I will make it easy for you. Go ahead and write a really nice piece with plenty of perfectly spelled words, question marks and periods in every perfect spot. Rip me a new asshole since you seem to hate so much, let it all out, give me everything you got. Wrap it up real nice and email it to me and I will post your masterpiece writing for everyone to see.

The only one request I have is that you make it much more entertaining than your two previous comments, I am sure the people on EJ would also appreciate it if you actually knew what you were talking about when you wrote so please avoid anything to do with Blogging, Tanning or the Limousine business because it’s clear you have no knowledge about those three topics. Pick something good and make sure it’s real perfect. If you have figured out how to use email let me know I will be more than happy to give you an email address to send your precious writings to.

Ok now back to the good folks that actually know what they are talking about.

@Brian with the popularity of your site it hardly surprises me that you have pages of comments, how often do you go through them?

@Adrenalynn yeah I would say that about 98% of the spam comments that come through are pretty useless, every once and a while you get a spammer that actually takes a little bit of time and tries to write something decent. I se to always rip through my Spam comments with just a quick delete, but more often than not there are a few excellent comments that get thrown in there.

@smartguy – Whoa buddy! If you don’t like John’s blog, why the hell are you here? It’s a PERSONAL blog, written by him and if he doesn’t care about his spelling and grammar, why should you?

Should I begin to point out the spelling and grammar mistakes I find on big news sites daily? We’re human, no one is perfect, get over it.

All in all, don’t hate, appreciate.

Wow, you really have a lot of spare time on your hands to spend your day writing long replies to comments from people that know nothing.

I have to get back to work, providing an actual service from which people benefit.

Good luck with your little fantasy world in which you think you are relevant.

I must admin until the level of spam becomes too much to handle I find it quite amusing to read what comes in! You’ve had some good ones. One that I got recently that amused me was this:
“Great article, I completely agree with what your saying – as I have posted a lot of comments here now, I was wondering if you have egold as i have some spare cash in my egold account I want to donate to the site!”
And it was the guy’s first ‘comment’ by the way. Made me smile as I hit the spam button!
The little comment debate with SmartGuy was worth a read also….

@Lace thank you bro, he’s just confused. Something that was apparent when he commented on a Spam post and decided to take the time to attack me. Makes you wonder if he might have been one of the moronic assholes that I exposed in my post.

@MichaelR, OK
Here is my take on it.

When a commenter writes a lengthy comment, those words add to the existing content and should help the content of the page. It should really help if the content is relevant to the post.

Even though the comments were off topic to the post, now John has unique content not found anywhere else on the web. Maybe even controversial content. He also has a question raised and answered about the safety of indoor tanning. He also had some regular readers telling the commenter to back off. More content.

Ideally the comment/content should be on topic, but any lengthy text that is original should be a benefit to the blog.
