It’s time again to take a peek into how our indoor tanning salon business Extreme Tan and Smoothies did during July 2009 in comparison to July 2008, as I mentioned in my Extreme Tan and Smoothies June recap these are straight up comparisons. I also think it is important to note that I am very careful with what information we share on here about Extreme Tan and Smoothies, it is a well known fact that many of our competitors read this site daily.
The numbers included in this stats report reflect statistics on all six Extreme Tan and Smoothies locations in Pinellas County Florida and serving Tampa Bay Florida.

Total Tans increased by over 4,000 tanning clients for the month of July over July 2008, this increase calculates to a #000000;">+46% increase in tans.
Spray Tan Sales +/-
Airbrush or Spray tanning for Extreme Tan and Smoothies increased +50% over July 2008 and set a new all time spray tan record for July at Extreme Tan and Smoothies locations.
New Customers +/-
New customers continued to increase in July with a +28% increase over July 2008, we offered a pretty amazing new customer special during the month of July in the form of a web coupon that impacted the increase in new customers.
Tanning Lotion Product Sales (pieces) +/-
Indoor tanning lotions and indoor tanning moisturizing lotions increased by +43% vs July 2008, I would attribute the increase in this category to the increase of new tanning clients, as well as revenue from product marketing.
Smoothie and Beverage Sales +/-
Company Smoothie and Beverage sales increased +50%, this does not include the Muscle Milk sports nutrition line that we also carry. Our increased sales in Vitamin Water beverages contributed most to the increase in the Smoothie and Beverage category, it is also important to note that Extreme Tan and Smoothies offers Smoothies at 4 of it’s 6 locations.
Sunless Tanning Products (pieces) +/-
Our uvfree and sunless tanning products line increased +26% over July 2008, this percentage does not include any form of airbrush or spray tanning and only refers to self tanners and spray tan extenders.
Total Store Sales +/-
Extreme Tan and Smoothies, Inc. had a +47% increase in the month of July 2009 vs July 2008. I attribute the increase in sales over last year to a slowly improving economy, in addition to our spray tan specials and foot traffic increase.

Looking Back
As we closed out Extreme Tan and Smoothies in July we did it with some very aggressive spray tanning special offers and amazing tanning package specials for new and existing customers. We have opened up and scheduled new marketing campaigns for August which will be kicking off in two phases, America’s Favorite Coupon Book being the first phase and Clear Channel Outdoor billboards will follow it up during phase two. We still have a ways to go before we get back on the radio Wild 98.7 who is currently in the mist of a station move to WIld 94.1.
Moving Forward
I have come to realize that the indoor tanning salon business that we created and built from the ground up has matured into the perfect turn key tanning salon for any investor looking for turn key investments in the tanning salon industry. This is something that really hit me out of no where a few weeks ago, I mean in all honesty opening a new tanning salon was not something we thought would grow into a six tanning salon market leader in Tampa Bay. We wanted one tanning salon, pretty crazy if you ask me.
Here are a few reasons I feel Extreme Tan and Smoothies has grown into the perfect turn key small business.
- more indoor tanning clients than any tanning salon in Pinellas County Florida
- six salons with a completely developed Corporate structure, payroll and inventory system
- more sunless and uvfree tanning clients than service in Tampa Bay
- complete name brand recognition
- online and social media portfolio is SEO optimized and has been for years
- enormous growth in a slow economy
- all salons remodeled or new within the past 12 months
I can probably easily add another ten items to the list of reasons I feel that our tanning salons have tremendous value, it would bore most of you into closing the page if you already haven’t. I guess the point I am trying to make here is that I never really thought our tanning salons would be more than a single store “fun business” to own and it has grown into something really special. I love the idea that our customers really love our service and the new fresh decor and state of the art tanning beds and tanning equipment we have to offer, that means a tremendous amount to us and how we conduct business daily.

That is great! I think it shows that many people do care about the way they look! I have never tried tanning in a tanning salon, but I have many firends who do go and love it! I shall have to ive it a try!
