Extreme Tan and Smoothies June Recap

by Extreme John on July 6, 2009 |

As I am sitting here and getting ready to write this article that includes some sales information and June stats data for Extreme Tan and Smoothies I find myself wondering why I am doing it in the first place. I can’t really come up with any good reason to do it other than the fact that I guess I want to show some of the small business owners out there that are struggling in the economy that there is hope. As much as I think there is hope and I always try to maintain the “be positive” perspective on the overall outlook of things, I am also a realist and understand that our indoor tanning salons hardly reflect every smalll business out there, or their results and struggles.

Before I really get into any of the numbers below I think it’s important to explain that I am carefully picking the numbers that I want to share, I will be the first guy to admit that if these numbers took a dive I most likely wouldn’t post them. Again more of the positive than the negative.

The indoor tanning salon business statistics below are straight up comparisons between June of 2008 and June of 2009, the numbers below also reflect all six Extreme Tan and Smoothies Florida locations.

Total Sales Increase +49%

I would attribute the large increase in total gross sales to some new in store creative events that were aggressively priced, in addition to a few aggressive ad campaigns that were coming to a close.

Total Tans Increase +47%

I will contribute the increase of total tans to the institution of a customer friendly V.I.P customer retention program and excellent customer service levels at each location. In addition we had tremendous increases at our two recently acquired tanning salons in Seminole and St. Peterberg Florida.

Total New Customers +60%

Our total new customer counts were up a tremendous amount which I would attribute to the new mobile airbrush tanning sunless tanning option we now offer as well as the marketing we did in June.

Redeemed Coupons: Direct Mail, Coupon Books and Website Coupons

One of the easiest forms of marketing to track is direct mail marketing, radio being the toughest to track. I get a weekly report from each of the stores that shows me coupon redemption rates for each location, at the end of the month I get an overall coupon tracker report. Here are some of the results of the direct mail marketing and other print marketing we did during the month of June.

Coupon Redemption by Volume Order

  1. Extreme Tan and Smoothies website (website coupons) – 195 Coupons
  2. Val Pak (direct mail) – 95 coupons
  3. America’s Favorite Coupon Book (coupon book) – 59 coupons
  4. Money Mailer (direct mail) – 20 coupons

As you can see there were a fair amount of coupons redeemed overal during the month of June, which was actually a very dry and humid month which usually causes more Floridians and tourists that would usually tan indoors to go to the beach to tan.

Looking Back at June

Looking Forward into July

  • We will reduce marketing in two print/direct mail products
  • We will continue to take serious inquiries into franchise options in the Tampa Bay area
  • I will share a day on the road in Tweets to visit all six Extreme Tan and Smoothies locations
  • Summer Fun Friday’s will continue at all six locations every Friday in July
  • Increase the amount of web specials offered
  • Continued customer tanning training through the Extreme Tan and Smoothies blog
  • Complete the details for the planned August opening of a new Extreme Tan and Smoothies

We have a lot more on the plate than what I listed above, but to be honest I don’t need to bore you anymore with rediculous details about things that probably don’t matter to you. I hope that this information is helpful to a few of the small busines owners out there that might have been looking for a few fresh ideas, or to the business investors out there that might be considering tanning salon franchises in Florida. Please leave a comment with any suggestions or questions, thank you.

Serious Franchise inquires only, please contact 727-501-9501 to be placed on the potential franchisee list.

Couple things:

First… I love the images you create for the top of each of your posts. Honestly, the coolest ones I have seen on the Internet. Do you do the graphics yourself?

Second… You are the man! You run 3 offline businesses and a blog… and it sounds like you do them all well.

Keep up the great work!

@Brian We try to have fun when we can thats for sure. As for the hot woman, I would have to say yes.

@Doug Dillard Thank you I appreciate the feedback on the top post graphics, I have a designer in house that does handles any of our “web related” things. I am constantly fighting with those images and if I like the size, etc. so having some feedback is greatly appreciated.

Not sure I am the man, just fortunate enough to be surrounded by some excellent people that make it possible for me to be in multiple places at one time.

Glad to see that someone else in the Tanning Bed industry is doing well. We sell tanning beds for homes, and are also doing very well this year so far.

I guess people still want to look good even if they are out of a job. Maybe they want to look good so that they have a better chance of getting a job?

Keep up the great work. Very informative, interesting blog.
