It wasn’t all too long ago that I can remember sitting in front of a computer and checking my Facebook messages and My Space messages when I stopped to think for a moment that there was a huge difference between Facebook and My Space and the ways that I used them. Now I find myself sitting here writing a post about how the one social networking site that I held sacred is no longer sacred to me.
I really was a huge whore on Myspace which was where I felt the separation between Facebook and Myspace and how I used the two on a daily basis, on Myspace if you requested to be my friend I accepted it no questions asked. Meanwhile in what was my private Facebook life I only accepted people I knew and never looked for new friends to add just for the sake of driving up my friend count.
Now times have changed for me on Facebook and I feel it’s no longer the sacred private place it once it was, I am completley ok with it because it’s typical for the cycle I would follow with any social networking site. I haven’t completley turned into a Facebook whore by any means, I still take forever to accept friend requests and often try to guess who they are or how the person making the request even knows me.
Since Facebook is no longer sacred in the fact that I no longer personally know every single one of my Facebook friends I decided to take it up another step and create a Facebook Fan page, sure why not jump on the bandwagon and see if it offers me an additional way to connect with the people that are crazy enough to want to connect with me.
If you feel crazy enough to want to connect with me on Facebook as well as read my crap here on Extreme John than go crazy with yourself and become a fan of my Facebook Fan Page. In the meantime leave a comment and let me know your views or share how you use Facebook, is it still a sacred place for you to connect and communicate with friends and family or long lost relatives or is it a place for you to whore yourself out in hopes of getting free traffic to your blog or website?

Devirginized, yes because FB is now accessed by over a million users what do you expect? Still exclusive. There are no VIPs i Facebook not unless the FB Gods implement premium.
@Elysa@GoGo Bar in CDO Philippines, so very true Alysa and thank you for taking the time to comment I appreciate it
Hey John, I’m a fan now.

@ZXT, hey thanks Z I appreciate it man.
You know this is awkward only because I do like you and I don’t LIKE many people.Because I have seen them come and GO LOL
But as I said this is not the case here so I would be glad to go and add myself that to your fan page because I’m a FAN of your style and work ethic and genuine persona.Facebooks best feature is the HIDE button and I’m sure that many have used it on me because I usually pop off all kinds of whacky things on there but then one day I was thinking damn I do have some real life family and friends on there lucky they don’t blog but I’m sure they used the HIDE Button along time ago
When your ready to run some campaigns on there let me know I have some good cheat sheets ;) In fact I’m getting ready to pimp FB myself ;) I may of finally found an affiliate mgr that knows something and has my back we shall see

1 Facebook is lame and a total swamp of pathetic marketers, scammers and mlm knuckleheads and I FAN No one on Facebook because I don’t FAN regular people. The reason is because 99.9% of the people on Facebook that have 5000 friends suck and the FAN page is like their other dumpster to dumb their tricks and vics LOL
Blog looks tight and thanks for carrying me over in your blogroll Daily Spots looks tight thanks
I see that tweet thingy is gone I had probs on some themes on where to get that line of code just right but the upgrade is amazing Nice work to all your success…Peace

Does that mean you miss me when Im not on? Haha. I can see your views on Facebook I will however say that it’s like any other major social networking site, it is what you make it.
Hahahaha!! I don’t know if Facebook was forever sacred to me.. It only might seem that way ‘cos I largely ignore it these days. :D

Not a huge fan of facebook anymore, I spend too much time on blogs and stuff reading people’s posts and ideas. I think there are a lot more tools now to connect with people and more and more are popping up everyday so its hard to commit to one thing.
@Alan @ Glass Pipes, I would have to agree it’s a forever changing market place that has it’s fads just like anything else, all though I still think Facebook is beyond a fad at it’s current state.
It’s good for me because it connects me with my family and long life friends that I live 1200 miles away from which I do like.
When it comes to accepting any friend request just to increase my circle of ‘friends’, it’s at twitter that I kind of feel like a whore. Nowadays however, I make it a point to at least require someone to have an avatar instead of the default twitter icon on his/her account before following back.
With facebook, I know a lot of my friends personally. There are however a growing number of ‘relatives’ that I have no idea about. It seems you can’t turn down someone with the same family name as you wanting to hook up with you in facebook. About 75% of my facebook circle now consists of ‘relatives’.
James Moralde´s last blog ..Wow 2012!
@James Moralde, I would probably say that about 65% is friends than another 15% family.
I have had some long lost family members in other countries become friends on there which was pretty surprising since I never really met any of them. Thats one of the crazy things about Facebook.
OK, you wh****, I’ll be pretty soon be your fan too
As for mySpace, is that a new site? haha.. believe it or not, I do not even have an account there.. As for FB, yeah, I hear you, and I am still trying to increase that friends count which right now is only limited to people I know. Maybe I’ll join your club:)

I don’t frequent FaceBook or MySpace as much as I used to , it always seem a lot of time wasting, great for communication from friends, but it just gets too much sometimes!

I never used to use facebook.. but now I have a personal account..that I use tp play games like Mafia Wars and farmville… I am very addicted to it.. I hate such games
@Compute Live, I was pretty addicted to Mafia Wars for a pretty good amount of time.
@Compute Live, I agree with you facebook games are fun to play. Specially like Farmville

I don’t use facebook to promote my blog or to connect with just anyone. I use it to talk to friends and people I really do want to connect with but I can see how that could change over time.
I do try to connect to some people who don’t know me but I do that very seldom.
@Blaine Bullman, see so it’s still sacred to you which is a good thing. Don’t enter the dark side
haha
I love how you admitted you were a whore hahaha
@Eggs, that’s how I do.
Truly speaking I am a lot confused in those lot many Social Networking sites. All of them including Facebook are a good source of spreading the posts and also connecting with people. But, as everyday a new Social Networking site is buzzing around, it has really becoming difficult to stick to only one.

Facebook and Myspace never worked well for me, I suspect, because there are a lot of people there trying to escape the rest of the Internet. I’m not talking about promotion here, I’m even talking about keeping up or reconnecting with friends – if someone wants to connect with me, they’ve gotta at least try reading the blog. I’m putting up what I read and work on there because I think what I do is important.
I dunno. I’m curious about the level of interaction you had on Facebook: you make it sound like you forged real friendships there for a time, or really helped some people or were helped. If a networking site can work like that, I think that’s a really really important deal, and I’m interested in how such interactions can be fostered.
Also – totally off-topic, but I figure I’d better ask. I just wrote on a hip-hop song on my blog, and I know no one who is into hip-hop. I’ve posted the link in comluv below, I can definitely use a bit of help getting it out there.

@Extreme John, thanks so much – traffic’s been decent today, I think I figured out a way of promoting this post: definitely hitting a few music forums to get in on discussions.
ashok´s last blog ..Briefly Noted: Plato’s “Menexenus”
Yes, I totally see where you’re coming from. I used to be a Myspace whore, always changing my profile design and accepting all friend requests, but it didn’t seem as personal as Facebook is. When I got Facebook, like you John, I was more cautious with who I did and didn’t accept, and I still am to a certain extent now.
Ah, you’ve reminded me of the old days with Myspace. I almost miss the tackiness now… almost. I’m more into Twitter now, just for promotion really. I wonder what’ll be next.

@Ben, I am a little curious about what will be next as well. It’s kind of hard to guess because it seems like there is already so much “right now” social sharing going on and connecting.
I have two Facebook accounts: one for personal stuff and the other for business. So far I have not used any of them for lack of time and because I do not want to go hunting for friends. I want real friends not just a number that does not mean a thing but just to impress others.
For the time being I will stick with blogging to share my insights and also listen to what other fellows and fellas have to say.

@Custom Blog Design, having a massive number is nothing more than trying to have the most friends in High School really. Well that and than of course all of the additional people that John Sullivan mentioned above.
I would rather have quality over quantity any day of the week.
Hi
,
What worries me the most is people who post photos of their children on public forums (such as this one) and actually ASK people to comment- such as “do you think my baby is cute” etc. They have no control over who looks at those pictures!
web site marketing´s last blog ..Efficient web design and marketing solutions
@web site marketing, my wife does that and I hate it. Such a good point.
I have two FB accounts just as I have two Twitter accounts. I want to meet and interact with people on the internet and with my blog readers etc. But I don’t want people I’ve never met to be looking at baby pics and other family photos & information. So that is why I keep them separate. So, FB is still sacred to me, I abandoned MySpace a long time ago though.

@Ms. Freeman, your probably doing the right thing by having multiple accounts as well as separate accounts.
@Extreme John,
The hard part is making sure I respond to each group appropriately. Not selling to my family and friends and not be a sweet and sappy to my business followers.
Ms. Freeman´s last blog ..What’s In Your Blogging Environment?
I definitely use FB and Myspace differently, and you’re right, I’ve done it that way from the very beginning. I don’t really befriend just anyone on FB, I usually seek out people from my past, other bloggers, or people I currently know. There has been a few exceptions, but it’s nothing like Myspace where I will befriend just about anyone. I wonder if there’s some kind of reason for that, or if it’s just because most people who use FB started off with Myspace and realized how shallow it was to just collect virtual friends?
Trey – Swollen Thumb Entertainment´s last blog ..Free Music Download: Baghdad
@Trey – Swollen Thumb Entertainment, I think you hit the nail on the head Try. I have always said that was the reason for Facebook blowing up in the first place, everyone that defected from MySpace did the new cool thing and headed to where the “grown ups” were on Facebook.
The same thing will happen on a daily basis with just about any social networking site, because people get bored.
For the most part, my personal Facebook account is for real friends only – however, I did become friends with 25 people that have the same first and last name as I do. I thought it was kind of a cool meme. A lot of my friends were kind of freaked out when the noticed how many times I became friends with “myself.”
I saw a tweet how a random twitter follow was normal, how one on Facebook was just creepy. For me it’s the same way, if I don’t really know you…I’m not going to approve that Facebook fan request. It’s more of a way to connect with my friends from high school to now. However, I am using it more and more to network with a small portion of coffee fanatics.
Mike from Daily Shot Of Coffee´s last blog ..Ethiopian Yirgacheffe from Barista On Duty – What I’m Drinking
I had a Myspace account once but never used it because I found that environment so childish. Lots of flashy and glittering pages out there with no really interesting purpose but to just say to the world “look at me”.
Facebook is kinda more mature but the friends number obsession thing is a turnoff to me. Why not try to befriend people with similar interests instead of choosing the quantity over quality.
Online and offline friendship should be based on the same set of rules. People you would not want to even look at offline should not be your friends online just to inflate the numbers.
For over a two years now I only have two friends on FB. One of those friends thinks it’s so sad and feels sorry for me but I don’t.
HI,
I started using Facebook years ago and that time I was not that much keen towards making so many friends and going into their walls so often. At that moment I remained there just so limited but later on I realized it being getting quite social and having mutual friends, relations and reputation apart from being involved into entertainment stuff. So, it was something an year or two, I started to meet new people and then it got a routine with friends request in bulk, here Facebook got scary!
- J.
I’m experiencing the same thing, I don’t personally know some of my friends in FB. These friends of mine never failed to invite me to join their Fan page. Well, that can be very helpful for them in extending their connections. Most probably, in that way, it can help you too.

This is good news that facebook is becoming the best network tool for you. It’s not scaring you now.
As my opinion , Facebook is the best social networking tool for we bloggers.
No matter who is requesting you to be the friend. Now the time is to get more friends instead of counting and checking their previous compatibility with you….Go ahead now and accept the friend request.

Blogspot to Wordpress´s last blog ..Why do you use Twitter? Marketing tool or Socializing?
since twitter has the same popularity with twitter , i found myself love twitter more than facebook.
Social network is great when used to connect with friends or maybe people who have similar interest but I think these days Facebook friends has become like a competition of “hey I have more friend than him/her”.
I dont spend much time there. On average about 1 hour per week there just to see who has requested friend and to change some stuff such as status.
As for the friend list I keep it small. I have about 300 and honestly I know maybe only 50 among the 300 lol.
The good part of facebook is when I use it to trace back old friend I have not met for years. Its cool when it is used to really socialise but when it become an addiction its bad.

This is really the case with me and sometimes someone appear in my chat window saying ‘Hi’ and I reply whose there? lol.
Earning step……..it’s basically the matter of personal choice…..i dont like twitter at all……..but i love Facebook…..so i mostly use it….
Hey ExtremeJohn!
I always wondered what’s the point (ie: what’s different?) of having a facebook fan page if you already have a blog.
I mean you update blogs with pictures, posts, comments, etc. – isn’t a fanpage redundant?
And for a blogger, isn’t it just another site that you have to maintain and fill with even more unique content? Why bother if you already have a blog?
I dunno – maybe Facebook fanpages are for the folks who are blogophobic or something…I posted my “Where were you on Y2K” post on Facebook (see commentluv below if you’d like to tell me what YOU were up to!) and the Facebook folks who replied read my post on my blog but REPLIED ON MY FACEBOOK WALL!?! Go figure…
So, what does a Facebook fanpage offer that a blog doesn’t for:
A) Your readers/fans
B) For you?
Cheers!
