Fighter Jet Too Close to Detroit Appartment Building

by Extreme John on July 14, 2009 |

I had a pretty busy day today and feel pretty good with the amount of work I’ve gotten done over the past few days, especially with the recent office fire and limousine issue we had over the last three days eating up some solid time. I haven’t written about the office fire or the limousine issue yet, but I plan on getting to that in a little while.

While I was at the office Nate showed me a picture of a Fighter Jet too close to a Detroit appartment building on Sunday during a boat race that was going on in the Detroit river. According to this article titled “Detroit Gets Close Encounter with Jet” it seems that the picture below is getting a ton of attention nation wide.

I can honestly say that after looking at this picture of a fighter jet that close to where people live and that close to an apartment building seems pretty crazy to me, Im not saying if I think it is wrong or right for a Navy Jet to fly that close to where people live, what I am saying is that it’s crazy to me. I also have to give mad props to the pilot flying the fighter jet, because I can’t even imagine what is going through his mind at that exact moment.

Fighter Jet Too Close to Appartment Building

If a Navy F-18 Fighter Jet ever ran up on my and blew past Detroit appartment complex like the F-18 Fighter Jet in this picture above from this close encounter, I would probably have an instant heart attack. One woman thought the sky was falling down, not that I even have a clue what that could possibly sound like, I know for a fact I don’t really ever want to find out.

If you looked out of your apartment window or the front window on the second story of your house and were able to see a fighter jet coming right towards you, what would be the first 3 things that you would do? Leave a comment and let me know. On a side note Detroit News photographer Steve Perez couldn’t have nailed this picture any better.

Awesome Photo… but way too close! That is one great photo for sure. It just makes me think of an accident that happened about 5 mile from my house a little less than a year ago. A fighter jet was trying to make its way back to Miramar when it was running out of gas. He decided to keep going instead of landing safely at another airport and unfortunately he did not make it. I am sure you read about it on CNN or somewhere but he had to eject and the plane landing on a house killing a woman, her child and her visiting mother. That photo is just a scary reminder, even if it was at a safe distance.

1. Grab my kitty
2. Freak out
3. Grab my teddy bear :)

Okay….. so I’d grab my laptop, Box of Writing & Priceless/Irrereplaceables, Teddy bear, and whatever handbag chock full of stuff is by my front door (hopefully with car keys in it). And open the door so my cat could run out and hop in my car with me since she is so anti being picked up!

@Doug Dillard wow that is crazy, Im not sure that I remember the story your talking about but I can clearly see why the picture would be weird.

@Stiletto Sports Jen I love how even though the kitty cat can be a royal brat and you still decided to take her.

@Karen I know that earlier today I was about 3 hrs from where the Space Shuttle took off and we could hear it on my front lawn. I couldn’t even imagine what that F-18 sounded like going by.

That does look pretty close. Really cool photo though! Just commented on your German Airshow Crash post and it was jets like this that were not too many feet above our heads at the show at the weekend. They get pretty loud up close I can tell you!

1) Say WTF in my head
2) Throw a ball it and see if I can hit it
3) Go down stairs and get my ball lol

I am so silly. I can’t believe a woman thought the sky was falling. Man that make her seem nuts. (or dumb) either way it’s still funny.

That was a pretty cool picture. I would think that person flying the air craft probably got an ass chewing when he got back on base. Greg Ellison

LOL @ Deneil.

Well, I would probably:
1) Also say/think WTF.
2) Get my camera
3) Signup as a fighter pilot – I wanna do that too!

You think that’s close? Try being on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier while those things are landing and launching all around you. Of course, this is Detroit, where the closest they usually come to something like this is a guy carjacking a Firebird and then launching it off an overpass.
This is what I would do:
1. Stand there, awestruck, and thinking of ways to kill the pilot out of jealousy (I wanted to be a pilot, bad eyesight)
2. Kick myself in the butt, after the plane was out of sight, for not bringing the video camera out onto the balcony with me.
3. Go wake up my wife. That woman can sleep through anything.

Hey John. I just sort of stumbled on your page by looking to take a peak at that outrageous shot of an f-18 practically buzzing a detroit apartment building. But then I got called away and had to come back the page the next day, today actually. I then sort of checked out your site very briefly when I went to business and from there to dirtbags among us. I proceeded to read your post about people essentially doing various mooching tactics to various pieces of commercially created and owned media of yours. I am a an ex marine that many moons ago was an early web pioneer and then had some health and family catastrophes force me to sell my business early and help out caring for an uncle who I hired and then he got a rare brain disease and died in his early 50s. Sorry for the sob story but I figured you might like a bit context on who you are talking to. So my question is this. You seem to be a guy who has done substantial work blogging and working with all the social networking sties, and I appreciate you do not do it with dirtbag tactics and call others out who do. I was just curious if you could point me towards any books or other places even on your own site that have some good primers that will catch me up with the way people are building online content these days, including the thing you want to watch out for and thing you do not want to because you might be infringing on others. I ask because this is something you care about and so here I am saying I accept that you that are working in the field type of authority, how would you teach someone to get their own content online in a way that is smart for them but does not make then engaging in dirty doer practices.
I will admit that I have not had the time to really cull through all of your site so there may be much here already that answers the question I just asked, but I hope you take this as complement that i am even corresponding with you to get your advice. I certainly do not expect you to do any more than is convenient for you answering my question, and regardless I just want to say thanks for some of the great photo posts and I hope you business is successful without too many moochers to trifle with.

Cheers,
Rob @ Andydfrain

Awesome! It takes talent, brains, and a lot of “the right stuff” to be a fighter pilot! Kudos to the pilot….these are the guys who keep this country safe.
