Firefox Add-Ons for Blogging

by Extreme John on July 21, 2009 |

Firefox has been my web browser of choice for a couple of years now, it took a little bit to get use to it once I switched from using Internet Explorer as my everyday browser.

One of my favorite things about Firefox is having the ability to add different add-ons from the Firefox Add On Directory, the add-on directory lists the various add-ons for Firefox. I am addicted to not only trying different Firefox add-ons, I honestly can surf through and read about the various add-ons for hours, yes my addiction to add-ons is much like my addiction to WordPress plugins.

I figured if I could take the time to share the different WordPress plugins that I use here on Extreme John.com, I might as well go ahead and do an article sharing the Firefox Add-ons that I use. Keep in mind that not every Firefox add-on is right for everyone and everyone uses their browser in different ways that might require them to use different add-ons, I hope you find a few of mine useful.

I think it’s important for me to note that just about every Firefox add-on that I use, I use because it aids me in updating this blog and visiting the bloggers that come through here on a daily basis and leave comments.

Alexa Spark Firefox Add-on

Alexa Spark Firefox Add-on

Alexa Sparky

This add-on will display Alexa page rank in the bottom of your browser window, excellent for stats addicted bloggers like myself.

ColorZilla

Puts a convenient color picker in your Firefox tray that gives you the ability to pick colors right from websites and blogs, great if your looking a new color for a blog design your working on.

Copy Link Text

Probably one of my most used add-ons, allows you to copy a hyperlinks text.

Easy Comment

Makes filling in comment forms a sinch, one click and auto fill email, website, and name. Very convenient if you leave a comment on a lot of blogs.

Feedly

Is an excellent feed reader that makes it easy to subsribe to rss feeds and manage your rss feed subscriptions, you can read my Feedly review if you feel up to it.

Fire FTP

Makes logging into your server a snap, right from your Firefox web browser.

Live PageRank Firefox Add-on

Live PageRank Firefox Add-on

Live PagrRank

Will conveniently display a web pages page rank in the bottom right of your Firefox browser.

Menu Editor

This one allows you to edit your Firefox menu’s so you can display the items you want and remove the one’s you don’t.

Personas for Firefox

Want to get a little funky? Maybe a little freaky or even crazy? Personas can doll that Firefox browser up with all kinds of sexy skins to make it your own.

Read it Later

Probably my favorite add-on (I say that a lot), if you dont like having 100 tabs open this little puppy allows you to “read it later” as the title would suggest.

Shareaholic & ShareThis

Excellent for sharing and bookmarking your favorite websites.

Snapper

If your a blog writer Snapper can save you a lot of time and help you spruce up your articles with screen captures, Snapper allows you to grab a screenie in seconds without leaving your browser.

StumbleUpon Firefox Add-on

StumbleUpon Firefox Add-on

StumbleUpon

I started using this plugin thanks to John over at Pot Politics who pushed me about how great it was, John was right now please Stumble this article. Thanks ;)

UrlbarExt

Excellent if your a blogger, makes copying url’s and a few other things a snatch. Yes I used it a lot to write this article.

Xmarks

Backup and sync your bookmarks between various computers.

Zemanta

This add-on is another sweet tool for bloggers that want to create sexy looking and more informative articles. Imagine images that you can use without worrying about Copyright infringement, or hyperlink text in your articles to the Wiki or the homepage of a suggested word or phrase, it even suggests tags for you to use. Must have in my opinion.

Ok now that I have entirely way too much time on this thing, Im going to get out of here. If you like this article please consider retweeting it and as always subscribe to my rss feed.

I love Firefox and have never looked back since I first started using it many moons ago
Some of the add-ons you have mentioned I currently use such as Fire FTP and some I’ve not tried, but this is a good collection of add-ons and thanks for the heads up on some nifty looking ones

The cool thing about the alexa plugin is that every time you visit your own site you are helping your state :-) I will have to try the Zemanta plugin, I am hearing a lot of great things about it recently. BWT, just twittley this!

I’m using about zero of those plugins, going to have to try at least a few of them that I think could be helpful.

I’m definitely not much of a tech or computer guy, so any help is always much appreciated. I recently came across SeoQuake, which I use a lot for page rank, links etc..Check it out if you haven’t…

John, I’ve heard more and more people saying that Firefox is the way to go. I’m still in the hesitant crowd, but I think I need to pull up my pant-legs and jump in.

Also, it a great service when you talk about the widgets and plug-in’s. Many of the ones I’ve implemented I read about here on your site first.

Holy crap I missed the comments here, sorry everyone.

@Brian thank you, I will be checking those two Firefox add-ons out as well, I haven’t heard of them until now.

As for BE yes I still submit my articles there, I just try to do it when I have time ya know.

@TechZoomIn excellent let me know which one’s you like or dislike, I like the feedback.

@Tycoon Blogger see I didn’t even know that about the Alexa add-on for Firefox, that’s good to know. Zemanta can be useful at times thats for sure, it saves time.

Thanks for the Twittley love!

@Nicholas Z. Cardot I am sure you will find “easyComment” to be a very helpful tool if you leave comments on blogs.

@Doug Dillard haha thats good news man I’m glad you found a few things in my list of Firefox Add-ons useful.

@Tyler wow thank you for the tip, I think that’s one of my favorite things about articles like this is when someone like yourself (and others above) also include tools they recommend. Thank you.

@The Constant Complainer Without a doubt would recommend the switch to Firefox, the add-ons alone will save you a tremendous amount of time. It might take a little getting use to, but in the end I think you will be happy with the efficiency it add’s to your game. :)

I was highly against Firefox in the beginning, but I was obviously being an idiot because it is way better than IE. I just found out about the add-ons but haven’t had time to really mess with them yet. Great info as always John. Thanks for sharing.

I love Firefox too. I’ve been using it for a long time and just today I upgraded to version 3.5.1 and my Norton security toolbar isn’t compatible now. What a pain. As big as Norton is you would think they could try to keep up. Great list of add-ons though, I use several myself.

I love Firefox, but usually only use it for professional purposes.. I gotta admit that all the add-ons, etc warp my fragile mind in the later hours, so I tend to stick to Google Chrome at home.. nice, simple and easy

@Brian I will do bro, been a crazy week for me still trying to get caught up and get through everyone’s sites while I am at it. Than hopefully I can give these a shot.

@Christina happy I could offer some Firefox tips about the add-ons that you might be able to find useful :) BTW Firefox is way better than IE.

@Brian D. Hawkins you would think Norton would be all over being ready for changes like that, they have been around for 300 years at this point.

@Hard Rocking South African I still have yet to try Google Chrome, I am pretty happy with Firefox and im sure it will take some effort to pry me away. haha

8) Love your blog, now see I’m in Chrome right now because I was just checking some web cams (don’t get excited, I just miss the beach!) and I check the TV Guide and do my banking there. But I got sidetracked and went on Twitter and landed here. Chrome is good for quick ins and out. The homepage is like Opera, I like that because of it’s “thumbnail URL” homepage made up of your most visited sites. Now I just added you to twitter, so I can follow up in Firefox which I use BECAUSE of their add-ons. I absolutely love it. Left IE about 6 mos ago. I will have to check out your add-ons as well as the other readers’ also. Needless to say “You Will Be Bookmarked!” One cool add-on I love is the ColorfulTabs, changes color for every tab you have open making them easy to distinguish. Thanks, very informative.

@Kim wahooo! Thank you for stopping by the place, I appreciate you coming by and commenting :) All this talk about Chrome makes me want to check it out, Im just so happy with Firefox.

Colorful Tabs is another good Firefox Add-on, I believe this is now another version like it however the tabs will change color based on their age, helps serve as a reminder that you have had a page open in a tab forever and should probably get to it. haha.

What is your Twitter username? I recently turned off my auto follow back, I would like to follow you back :)

There are just too many add-ons that its hard to keep up with them. They add more details, but I presume they slow down your browsing a bit. I could be wrong hey!

Thanks for sharing these with us :)

@George I don’t know about that, I mean I guess there are some that do, but for the most part I only pick add-ons that will help me be more efficient and effective.

I would have to empathize with your addiction to add-ons and plugins. I have it too. As a developer, IE gives so many of us fits. Firefox has been my browser of choice for a few years as well and I turn anyone I can onto it. Internet Exploder is bloat and crap and nothing else. We need to start a movement or something to bring IE up to standards and become compliant if nothing else.

Hi John,
Do you add all plug-in you mention above? Do you have memory problem with a lot of plug-in. I heard that people have problem when adding a lot of Firefox plug-in.

However, In my Firefox browser I only add about 4 plug-in. Seobook, Alexa and PageRank metter and Netvideohunter.

@Fiona Bosticky, thank you Fiona. The funny thing about this post is now I am on to Google Chrome instead, I love the consistency, less issues, faster, more convenient and gives me more viewing space within the browser.

It might not be right for everyone but I would def recommend playing with Google Chrome when you have some down time, it’s pretty sweet.
