One of the most widely used WordPress plugins on the planet is used for retweeting blog posts directly into your Twitter stream, the plugin with the most clout when it comes to widespread use is TweetMeMe. There is not a chance that you surf blogs on a daily basis and your not exposed to any of the retweet chicklets or buttons embeded into some of the blog posts you read, crazy as it might seem I do not currently use the TweetMeMe WordPress Plugin.
One thing that has really started to get on my nerves with bloggers that use this plugin is that they don’t take the proper time to go through all of the settings to ensure that everything is setup properly, instead they active the plugin and see the sexy retweet button and think the job is finished. Wrong, the installation is not finished and if you do not finish the setup properly you WILL be missing out on key networking opportunities with the people that read your blog and are kind enough to retweet your articles.
Installing the TweetMeMe WordPress plugin is as easy as one, two and three but if your looking to interact and network with the people that retweet your posts on Twitter than your going to need to fill out one very important part of the TweetMeMe settings so that you actually know when someone retweets your message.

Now the screen shot above is hardly the largest and most clear screen shot on the planet but it will get the job done for making this setting right so that you know exactly who retweets your post, I mean it would be nice to at least thank them for retweeting your post wouldn’t it? Here’s what you need to do.
How to Edit your TweetMeMe Plugin Settings
- After you install the plugin and active the plugin you will see “TweetMeMe” in your admin toolbar, click it.
- Scroll down to the section that says “Source” in the settings view (screen shot above)
- This area is blank by default, leaving it blank will place @tweetmeme as the default @ reply for the retweeted message. Put your Twitter username in this field, do not include the @ symbol.
- Save your changes
Incomplete Setup of TweetMeMe retweet output result
Making the simple changes above will ensure that you get the retweet message when someone takes the time to retweet your post, in the event you do not make those changes those replies and retweets are sent to @tweetmeme and it’s safe to say they are going to be a little too busy to thank your readers for retweeting your post.
In most cases I want the blogger that wrote the article to know that I retweeted it for them and I expect a thank you, if I don’t fill out the settings completley that means I would have to. Now ask yourself how many of your surfers and bloggers that read your blog will actually be nice enough to manually change the Twitter username in the retweet before sending it, safe to say it won’t be many.

Ya I have seen many blogs where people don’t change the default settings… I think many people will find this helpful

@Compute Live, I hope your right I know it’s frustrating when your trying to retweet something and you have to edit the name.
I’ve lost count how many blogs I’ve visited that haven’t set their tweetmeme up correctly, after all it’s improving their presence on twitter if they set it up in the correct way, that’s what the option is there for!
Karen @ Blazing Minds´s last blog ..What to do when you have a holiday away from your blog?
@Karen @ Blazing Minds, it’s such a no brainer but in many cases with plugins people fail to look at the settings because they see the plugin working.
Unfortunately gratitude is a rare commodity today.. But I’m glad to see that you’re doing your part to promote (see: guilt people into it) the behaviour..

I’m surprised that people don’t “investigate” new plugins properly when they put them out on the Wild World Web for usage on their blogs. Personally, I don’t leave a plugin until I’ve been through every possible setting of it – I can’t sleep knowing that I might be missing out on something cool because I didn’t check it through :D
John – let’s hope you have taught at least some people to properly setup their plugins, with this post.

I don’t know about this at all even though I’m using Tweetmeme and installed the plugin as well, but I forgot whether I’ve done this step in the past or not. Anyway, my retweet button and the message is fine, it displays my twitter name well.
Anyway, thanks for sharing this John!
Earlier, I used only a simple script to show the tweetmeme button which only tweeted to @tweetmeme by later on got to know about it’s plugin and installed it taking the configuration in mind which you have discussed in this article.
I am using 2 buttons…One Re-tweets @smartbloggerz and one @tweetmeme.
