It’s time for the “Friday Free-for-All” #FridayFreeforAll series of posts, my way for all of the small business owners and entrepreneurs that read my blog throughout the week to come together and share tips and opinions on an aspect of the small business world. This week I want to spend a few moments reflecting upon Steve Job’s letter of resignation. I want to know what age you think you will be when you give up control of your business…or have you already given up control of your business?
At What Age Do You See Yourself Giving Up Control Of Your Business?
When I think about giving up control of my company I have to admit that it sends a wave of panic through my core. I have always been a hard working self employed guy during my “adult” years and the thought of not having control of my company anymore makes me a little nervous. With that said, I can see myself eventually giving up the reigns to someone else who I can trust not only to run the every day but also to run the business during those moments of overwhelming incidences that always happen in the small business world. I would like to say that I will be able to step out of the front of the picture in the next five years or so but just saying that makes me a little nervous. I just can’t imagine not running in three different directions at once…I mean, can you see me just sitting around drinking a beer by the pool all day? Okay, so maybe you could but honestly after a couple of days my brain would kick me in the ass and new small business ideas would start once again.
Now it’s your turn to share! When do you think you will be ready to give up control? Comment below.

Hey John, I’m glad you’re not planning on leaving anytime soon. I’m just getting back into things and old blogging buddies are getting a little rare sense so many have dropped out.
As far as the age I’ll be ready to kick back and relax? I’m ready right now! My problem, other than the cash to make that move, is that whenever I’m idle for five minutes I’m mentally adding to my to-do list. It’s pretty frustrating at times, step out for a few to let the dog out and my mind goes into overdrive when I intended to take a break. I guess I’ll have to see when that curse disappears before I’m ready to relax long term. Either that or my body forces me too which it more likely.

Haha I’m ready to do it right now myself Brian… All though I might not be leaving the social networking blogging business world anytime soon I have a few other ventures I might be ready to part ways with soon enough.
Hopefully when you are ready to move in to the easier stages of being a business owner/entrepreneur things will go nice and smooth.

It’s hard to see me handing over the reigns anytime soon. But when I do, I bet, like you said, some new idea would hit me and I’d start pursuing that. I’m happier and more fulfilled when I’m working on a project. I don’t see myself ever getting out business completely.

John I am too involved in my business that I no and never think to give up it. As time passes we become more mature and our learning go to the peak. How is it possible that at peak I throw myself down at bottom.

Different goals for different folks brother. If you love what you’re doing, you should keep doing it.

If I can set up a good one, I hope to be able to hang onto it until I’m 50-60.
I used to own a web hosting company and I owned it for over 2 years. I had to sell it because I barely had time to manage it and I was going to get busier. Would have liked to still have it but can’t always get what you want. My original plan was to keep that going for as long as possible too.

Hi Nazmus, from what I understand the web hosting profit margins have been crushed to pieces over the last two years, so maybe in actuality getting out was the perfect time when you did.

John,
To be honest, I don’t even have a business or anything yet..then again I’m only 19. But I’m studying business in college, and it’s something I have a passion for. So once I DO have a business in the near future, I think I’d be ready to give it up between the ages of 30 and 40. I mean, any longer than that, and I think I’ll start growing out gray hairs, as running a business is obviously stressful (but enjoyable at the same time). But then, you bring up a great point; what to do after one “retires”. It’d probably be fun for a few days kicking back by the pool; but what next? I’d have to find one hell of a hobby!
I guess it’s too early for me to say now; but we’ll see. Hopefully I can retire young and actually enjoy life, instead of working 8 hours a day, 5+ days a week. Like you said though, it’s definitely important to find someone you trust to take over your business.

Hey Ben thanks for taking the time to read and leave a killer comment, it’s appreciated.
It looks to me like you have a solid game plan in place to see that 30-40 number come together. There’s no sense in writing it in stone, but it wouldn’t hurt to put on that list of goals you would like to achieve in the next 10 years.

Glad you’ll be around for a bit longer, John. LOL
On a serious note, I guess we all feel ready to pack in and retire to a shack on the beach when we go through the inevitable slumps, but thankfully inspiration kicks in from somewhere and a new idea is sparked.
I honestly think that I’ll continue for as long as I am physically and mentally able to do so, although I may take my foot of the gas and spend more time with my family and focusing more on hobbies at some point.

Hi John,
I guess it all depends, but I can’t see myself giving up control until I’m at least 50 years old. But it all depends on passion and if I’m still having fun. If I’m having fun and I’m passionate about what I’m doing, I can keep going until I can’t because I’m just too old to do anything other than eat pizza, watch TV and relax

I can’t say that I blame you. I can;t imagine how board I would be if I stopped working. I would have to stay consistent and develop new projects, most likely until I drop.
maybe the answer to this panicking we all have because you asked that question!.. would be mentoring.. getting someone in the family say your son or daughter and training him with the how you do stuff.. It would be like imparting your skills and wisdom in the business.. I think that can help..
I think I’ll give u control in 55-60. I would say later than that but I try to think about enjoying a retirement earlier too..

I don’t think I will ever want to give up control of my business but that attitude may change in a few years who knows.

Hi Danny, I hope everything is going well. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I am curious to see if that answer is the same in 5 years
I voted for 46-50 as I am 41 now and had originally planned on having a “mini-me” in placeby now to do most of what I do. Oh well,…looks like plan “B” is in order now!

Haha lot’s of Plan B’s being explored by business owners out there Ken. Lot’s.

I cant imagine giving up at all, Im the sort of person who needs to have something to do and keep me busy, If I gave up, I would have to find something else to keep me busy as im a very hands on person. Even when I am not working im still occupied with other things. So I certainly not planing on giving it up yet.
