Google Custom Search Now on Extreme John

Google Custom Search

I have now improved the way you can search Extreme John.com when you are looking for a specific post, the old search engine that I used previously was pretty much stock besides the look of it, it sucked and I hated searching my own blog with that search engine. I can’t even imagine how much all of you hated it.

Google Search will now provide the search engine results for Extreme John. One of the key features added with the new search box is that search results will now include results from all of my sister sites, in the end this means you will get the best search engine results possible thanks to Google.

If you are a newbie blogger or pro blogger you might want to consider reading my How to Add Google Custom Search to WordPress Blog, provide your visitors and community the best search engine results possible without making them leave your site.

Chances are this post was pretty useless to you unless this is your first time on my blog and your looking for something specific, type something in the Google custom search box you just might find something you like. I have over 750 posts here about anything and everything, my topics of choice are business tips, blogging tips, rants, Thesis information and UFC news.

P.s In addition to searching Extreme John and returning results from just my blog, the search results will also include any relivent posts on my other blogs, Extreme Tan and Smoothies, Insane Limos, MMA Punk, Bonehead Bulldog, and Insane John.

I also had Google Custom Search for less than a month but then I removed it again. I didn’t like the results it came up with, found that it was much easier to display the results the way WordPress did it.

But – it’s possible that the Google CSE might pick up on other/more stuff and it’s of course much better for searching other blogs/sites too, within EJ.com

Nice move!

@Klaus @ TechPatio, I wish Bing offered a custom search like Google does. I looked around yesterday and they offer a search box but not customizable.

Search box is a mandatory for any big websites and specially website like yours. Even I have done the same thing on my secondary blogs. I have included results from all my sister concern blogs. :)

I had it on my blog, then took it off and now it’s back on. the results can be better than the normal WP functionality. Although there are many plugins out there that can search almost everything from your site, I think it’s better to use Google.

I currently have the normal WP search as well as Google search.

Search box is a must for a blog as newbie can search for your older posts in your blog, it increases your page view. :)

I’ve been using this in my blog for quite some times, but I redirect the result to a Google page, I think it’s better to show the result in our blog page right?

I like the Google custom search, especially that you don’t have to limit results to your own sites! This can be really useful if you’re trying to share the best of the web with your readers, or even if you’re just trying to save some processing time on your own hosting account. Of course, you can also integrate your Adsense account with the search results, so it can even make a few bucks

@John@Web Biz, I might do something with Ad Sense I don’t currently use any affiliate programs here.

I am thinking I might create a custom search box and include my favorite blogs so that it’s easier to find some of the blog posts I want to reference from previous visits but didn’t feel the need to bookmark.

For now, as my blog has only a negligible number of posts, I have removed the default search box. I’m sure gonna be putting it up in the near future of course when I deem it necessary. The option to include search results from your other blogs is a neat feature. I’m gonna remember it when the time comes.

Well, I’m a great fanboy of Google and would love to try their custom blog search. But unfortunately, I find it (the search interface) way too ugly from an UI point of view. Something, that is forcing me to live with the WP search for now :-|

@TechChunks: Google Custom Search now allows us to modify the css and even the javascript
But I still use the Adsense for search because the GUI is simple and I can manage it within my Adsense account and both return the same results. However when some designers publish any post about designs for Google Custom Search, I may choose one and make a switch.

I have tried adopting the idea on my blog few times but it didn’t work to my advantage. I wouldn’t be running after any revenue it could possibly bring but to the point that it doesn’t even switch from “new” to “active” on Adsense tools, there isn’t much use really.

Besides being able to add adsense…what’s the benefit for a blogger?

And you have to stop selling yourself/blog short all the time…”Chances are this post was pretty useless”

@Mike from Daily Shot Of Coffee, I make that statement because it doesn’t really offer any useful information for anyone to actually put to use, it’s more about just searching this site.

The benefit to me as a blogger is that I can either search my own site or all of my blogs from one search engine, I always seem to get the result I want which differs from what WP returns, in addition to reducing the amount of time it takes me to write posts and deep link my blog.

Ok so none of the sites I’ve built incorporate blogs (yet) but this google search is very useful for any site, no matter how large or small.

As long as it is programmed correctly it can be invaluable for keeping visitors on your site if they cant find what they want instantly.

Heck, even I make use of these boxes on websites I view!

John, forgive me if this is a stupid question but some of the newbies out there (including me) would like to know. When I first started blogging a webmaster I know built me a custom template for a blog managed by Wordpress and hosted with Dreamhost. This was a time before the free blogging platforms came out. Are most bloggers now using the free platforms like WP, Blogger, Tumblr, etc where all the good plug ins you talk about can be added by the blogger? Because any custom plug ins I want on my WP blogs other than the standard ones available with WP 2.8 have to be installed by my webmaster. What would be the correct terminology for a WP blog that is custom or the diff between WP.org and WP.com in being able to use custom plug ins?

Hi John,

I, too, would like to add Google Custom Search to my blog. In your post above, you refer to another one of your posts, “How to Add Google Custom Search to Wordpress Blog”, but it’s not linked anywhere. Would you mind pointing me to that post? I think it would be very helpful, especially since I’m not a coding genius.

Thanks for your help — and Happy Holidays!
