I went riffling through my feed reader earlier today in an effort to get caught up with somewhere around 150 blog posts that I hadn’t had a chance to read yet when I realized that there was a Google Page Rank Update. For those of you that read my blog and have no clue what Google Page Rank is and why I would write about it, check out How to check your Google Page Rank.
There was a time that I didn’t really care what the Google PR was for any of my sites and much like this most recent Google Page Rank update I typically wouldn’t even know when one occurred. Now as I read more blogs and realize how important Google PageRank is in regards to the blogging community I pay more attention to it. It also helped that my Page Rank was constantly going up, you know a little self motivation for working it a little bit.
When Google Page Rank last updated Extreme John went from being a PR3 blog about nothing to a PR4 blog about even more of nothing, prior to the the PR3 update EJ was a Google Page Rank 1. How could anyone pass up on being excited about watching numbers go up, it’s one of my favorite things to do.
I really attacked hard and heavy after the last Google Page Rank update because I felt challenged to see if I could possibly take this little dirt hole on the internet to a Page Rank 5, that would be pretty exciting to me. I would retire…. O.k, maybe not.
I really thought for sure that my PR would go up the next time Google did an update, it’s always a surprise with Google so you really have no way of telling when one is going to happen. Reality hit when I realized after checking out a bunch of blogs in my reader that I should take a second and see what my PR was, did it change or did it stay exactly the same or even worse off did it drop? OH NO, NO Google PR drops please.
I peaked up at my Google Toolbar to see what my Page Rank was currently at, stunned.. It’s a Page Rank 4, hardly something that sucks or a bad problem to have, however it’s not the Page Rank 5 I wanted and honestly felt I worked for. Google Page Rank update hates me.
I won’t spend much time crying about it, the reality is that it is what it is and there isn’t too much I can do about it except to keep plugging away and doing what I like doing anyway. Not everything from the most recent Google PR update was terrible though, our indoor tanning blog went from a PR0 to a PR2, our limousine blog and MMA punk increased to Page Rank 2 from PR0.
3 SEO Tips to Increase Your Google Page Rank
- Deep link your articles together like a spider web within your blog
- Stay Clean refrain from linking to bad neighborhoods from within your articles
- Leave comments on RELEVANT Do Follow Blogs to increase backlinks
I guess it’s probably about time for me to get out of here and get working on the latest greatest thing that can increase Google Page Rank before the next (unscheduled) Google PR update. Before I get out of here I want to remind you to leave a comment (I like it like that) or take a second and subscribe to my rss feed to stay up to date with the latest crap I post here.

I am a big fat “0″
Definitely need some back links and interlink to more of my own post. I have a lot to learn and work on, but I am up for the challenge!

Ms. Freeman´s last blog ..I’ve Got Nothing: The Crowdsourced YouTube Video & iTunes Song
@Ms. Freeman, get that interlinking down than jump all over the backlinks ;)
I’m very disappointed that you care so much about PR…it’s not how google really sees your site. It’s fun to look at it, but really doesn’t matter.
Side note, I’ve heard that this wasn’t a normal updated and most established sites didn’t have a change.
Mike from Daily Shot Of Coffee´s last blog ..Richard Charlton’s Coffeehouse in Colonial Williamsburg
@Mike from Daily Shot Of Coffee, hahaha you know how I feel about this stuff. I’m pissed, you do realize that the # 5 is my number. Baseball number, hockey number, every sport number and I LOVE LOVE LOVE playing it on a craps table.
@Extreme John, John, my sport number is #6, my softball number, my futsal and my football number, so I hope I could get PR6 too, lol!
Lee Ka Hoong@Make Money Online´s last blog ..What Is Blogging And How Do People Make Money Online
@Lee Ka Hoong@Make Money Online, haha maybe I should change my sport number to a 7. That would be something else.
@Lee Ka Hoong, lol! That would be cool! Then you can start working hard for PR7 haha!
Lee Ka Hoong@Make Money Online´s last blog ..What Is Blogging And How Do People Make Money Online
Still stuck at pr 3. I have been busting my hump, so I know what you mean by being pissed. I would be happy with pr 4 right now

Tycoon Blogger@Make Money Blogging´s last blog ..How Blogging Saved My Life
@Tycoon Blogger@Make Money Blogging, who knows maybe next time around they can show me some 5 love and hook you up with a four
It is said as your PR increase the difficulty increase too. Some SEO guru’s write a formula on how the PR will increase. But the some up of this all is that the difficulty is express in EXPONENTIAL principle.
Extreme Cheers
the bad thing is that page rank is sometimes not it should be and unfortunately some outbound link are bad when you link to bad ones according to the search engine. then the high pagerank get lots of SEO spammer that are in some case bad link
in fact I just start blogging, but i’m a long time net user and SEO is in my radar screen for long time since it’s not very far from hackers. and guess what I work in computer security identity management and access control
Since PageRank is exponential you will need a lot of relevant an quality backlink, but also balance the bad one going out as dofollow can have. in addition you will also need to not loose too much from others that goes higher and just decide they have too much spam and close the dofollow 8-O. yep this happen even to great blogger. most PR6 and over i know and visits are now nofollow to try to just keep spam in an acceptable level even with 3-4 spam detector installed. Good luck a good PR 6 for next update for you
personal-tips @ personal finance´s last blog ..mortgage crisis how to repeat it
@personal-tips @ personal finance, all very good points. Thank you for taking the time to comment I appreciate that.
I have had to do a lot of re-vamping of my blogs because it took a while for me to understand the types of things that would help increase my pagerank with Google. I understand that I was not optimizing my blogs and hence they were not pagerank friendly but now I am working hard at overcoming this and some of my blogs have already reached pagerank 4 and I am really happy with that. To get above that for me realistically won’t happen any time soon. But like you said John, I just keep plugging along doing what I like to do.
Boomerblogger´s last blog ..Dog O Lanterns
@Boomerblogger, if nothing else at least it’s a kick ass hobby.
Google PR Loves me.. I got a PR4.. Maybe you will get a higher PR in the next update…
Compute Live´s last blog ..Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Review
@Compute Live, who knows either way I will still be here doing what I do.
I think a 4 is pretty good. I noticed Google is ranking Twitter profiles incredibly high for some reason. I have 4 or 5 twitter profile pages that rank 4 and above. Better than all my blogs. And I don’t even spend any time working on my twitter accounts.
Steve´s last blog ..The University of Toledo Exchanged UT for OSU
It looks like the higher you go the harder it becomes to move up a PR level so I wouldn’t stress too much if it takes a while longer than anticipated to move from a 4 to a 5. It’s pretty damn hard getting a PR 4 so it’s quite an accomplishment.
@Alan @ Glass Pipes, thank you Alan.
Don’t too care about Pagerank John, when you too care about this, it won’t come, when you don’t care about this, it will come shortly. PR5 is slightly different to be achieved though, my blog still stuck at PR3 for almost a year, I felt disappointed whenever Google Pagerank updates too, but I didn’t care about it anymore, just let it grows itself, as long as it doesn’t drop.

Lee Ka Hoong@Make Money Online´s last blog ..What Is Blogging And How Do People Make Money Online
@Lee Ka Hoong@Make Money Online, your right it seems like one of those things that no one should really worry about it. It’s all about that damn “status” haha.
@Extreme John, yea, with PR4 you should have a damn good status in advertiser and everyone’s sight. lol! Don’t worry John, I’m sure you’ll hit PR5 next PR update. I’m here to see that..

Lee Ka Hoong@Make Money Online´s last blog ..What Is Blogging And How Do People Make Money Online
I’m currently sitting at a 0, but I’m not too too worried just yet.. I’ll get up there with some more time and effort.. Besides, a 0 is better than anj “n/a”
@Hard Rocking South African@Music Judge, and certainly better than a –
My Google PR is stiil at 3, but at the end of the day, I get a lot of readers stopping by and latley comments have been a lot more than they used to be, so that’s me happy no matter what..
Karen @ Blazing Minds´s last blog ..Avoiding Twitter Phishing Scams in Direct Messages
@Karen @ Blazing Minds, same thing here Karen, at the end of the day I enjoy it.
Commenting on Do-Follow blogs is one of my favorite ways of getting the link juice and increase PR.
I think only because of PageRank we are doing Link building and it results not only in increasing the PR metric but also it helps in gaining traffic, new people and improvement in serps.
Typhoon´s last blog ..5 Ways To Keep Your Blog Readers Coming Back Again & Again
@Typhoon, well it makes sense overall the web should be connected and connecting the web requires hard work.
While its always nice to see an increase, I’ve learned to not worry about the flat lines and yes, even declines. I got a site from 4 up to 5 and the next time around it dropped straight to 3 – but the organic Google traffic kept going up anyway. Anyway, I just keep an eye on the traffic stats, income, and keyword rankings, because I think thats where the real progress can be measured.
John@Web Biz´s last blog ..Beware the Keyword Cannibals
@John@Web Biz, you know the funny thing is, I haven’t looked at my overall traffic stats in at least a month.
Well, I guess that if your blog would be more focused on some specific topics grouped in categories you might get better PR. Within your blog you could have higher PR pages as well as lower PR pages. Remember that google indexes pages. When you look for something on google you’ll be directed to a page, and not to the homepage of the site that owns it.
It also has a lot to do with your competition, if they manage to go up, and exceed your results then you might get down, even if overall you have done well.
So pr is not the first thing to worry about. I think more important is SERPs.
@Car News and Reviews, SERP’s are by far more important than Page Rank. PR is a decent rating system to gauge your blog with in the same fashion that Alexa rankings do.
Some bloggers find them useless and others love them.
You got PR4 and you think Google PageRank still hates you? Well maybe next time John…in 3 months time.
ZXT´s last blog ..Not so convincing spam comments
@ZXT, I didn’t get a PR I already had a PR4
I like new things, a nice new 5 would have been pretty and shiny.
My blog PR dropped from 3 to 2.

Fazreen´s last blog ..The Basic of Blogs and Blog Comments
@Fazreen, ruh roh
It really doesn’t matter. Honestly. I’ve reached PR6 twice in my web publishing history (on two different sites). It really didn’t change much in the SERP’s or in traffic.
Anne @ b6s.net´s last blog ..Backlinks from Wordpress Themes
@Anne @ b6s.net, can you just send me your PR and I will add it to mine? That will square everything away nice and quick ;)
Google PR update hates me more than you! My PR is still zero.. which sucks.. may be better luck next time
I guess I’ll have to try for more backlinks.
Nehh´s last blog ..Dakota Fanning: Upcoming young talent in hollywood?
@Nehh, keep doing what your doing and you will go from a PR0 to a PR2 on the next update. No sense panicking now.
Well, PR4 is not bad. It’s not so easy to get.
You’re doing a good job.
PR is the last thing you should worry about. All in all, it’s a number.
I have pr0 sites that are still indexed and rank very high. Pagerank has lost most, if not all of its value IN Google.
Lace@Lace Rocks´s last blog ..It’s getting cold
PR is a bragging tool. But only to my friends who really don’t know what it means. You are right when you say it’s a lot like the Alexa rank. It is for comparison only. Still the higher the number, the wider the smile, eh John?
It would be nice to be rewarded for all your hard work! Keep on and you will be there.
Keith@Norman Rockwell Art´s last blog ..Nov 10, The Metropolitan Museum of Art is home to Norman Rockwell painting
Page ranking won’t be a true factor which judges your website.I know some good sites that have low page rank and some low grade sites those have higher PR.Forget about PR and look for the content and matter written in the page.
John, obviously it hates all of us so
let us just concentrate on the blogging and clean works. A side note: I am glad with the new tunning for the theme if I am not mistaken!
Hicham´s last blog ..Justice and Stereotype
@Hicham, thank you Hicham I appreciate the kind words
I guess I’ll move on from my Google pains and get back to work, haha.
I used to be obsessed with Page Rank as well. But I just got fed up of it. My blog keeps going up and down after every update. I don’t pay any attention to it now.
The next Pagerank update will happen after the holidays John, so watch out. I’m at PR4 too from a PR2 climb in less than a year. I guess Google loves me.
Once Caffeine runs in full blast by 2010, you’ll know what’s next…
Mathdelane @Software Critics´s last blog ..Web Hosting Sites You Can’t Trust
PR is good for impressing other human beings; it’s less important to the Google algo when ranking you site.
@TigerTom@Loans Bad Credit, very true.
I’ve been working on my PR. Still I haven’t got a lot of visitors lately thats why maybe I have it low. :D
Good luck to us!
Good luck, and I wouldn’t worry about it. Just enjoy doing what your doing.
