Heart.. Do You Have It?

If your a sports fanatic you constantly hear announcers yap about how a certain player has HEART and plenty of it, of course everyone has A HEART, but having a heart and having heart are two completely different things. In sports athletes with heart manage to overcome some of the greatest challenges and adversities imaginable, imagine recovering from a devastating head or neck injury received on a football field during a helmet to helmet collision, without heart that recovery isn’t possible.

Business owners need heart too, and every once in a while they need to have a heart as well. This isn’t about having a heart, it’s about having THE HEART to be unstoppable and overcome tremendous adversities, nothing like physical ailments that athletes and many others have to overcome, but adversities regardless. Most of the people that I come in contact with on a daily basis want to know the big “secret to success” and what they need to do to achieve success, of course they would prefer it if the information came delivered in the form of a sentence or less. Better yet I would be willing to bet that most of the people that ask that question wouldn’t mind if someone just did it for them real quick, you know… so it doesn’t require as much effort. haha.

My answers are usually the same and include the same old boring business tips that I will post on here from time to time and in most cases it wouldn’t matter anyway because most people that claim to want it don’t have the heart to even begin to try and get it. Instead of going on and on about heart and how important it is to the success of a new small business or new business owner I will sum it up with the picture below, it’s alllllll heart.

Urijah Faber Leg Picture

Urijah Faber Leg Injury

The picture above is the result of about 800 leg kicks that Urijah Faber took over the course of 5 brutal rounds during last Saturday’s WEC event in Sacremento, it is important to point out that even though Urijah was unable to put any weight on his leg after the middle part of the second round he still managed to go all 5 rounds. Would you have the heart to fight 5 rounds and take kick after kick, after kick, after kick to a leg that has already been pulverized? That’s heart.

You might not be taking kicks in your day to day business operations in the same fashion that Urijah Faber did when he faced Jose Aldo, but trust me every business has it’s challenges and if you have any chance of making it your going to need incredible heart.

P.s. Big thanks to my boy James from MMA Punk for giving me the scoop on the picture that Urijah tweeted on Twitter a few days after the fight.

That event had some of the best fights that I can ever remember with plenty of heart all around, including Scotty Jorgensen’s come back after nearly getting finished in the 1st and that amazing fight between Garcia and the Korean Zombie.

@WarriorsOfMMA, the fight card was incredible especially the free fights on Spike TV. Top notch from top to bottom for every fight on the card that night.

I reckon that all heart takes is the interpretation of every challenge and set back as part of the grand game of life. It’s a challenge set to test your constitution, your value as a person. Take the challenge and run, kick the shit out of the world and enjoy smashing boundaries.

Thats why he’s the California Kid, the kids got heart.
I would of been in the fetal position after the first 2 kicks.
Ironically enough, the top 1/4 of his leg is what mine looked like
for about 2 weeks after my poll dancing demonstration went bad.
Advise # 1 -Never pole dance after 6 hours of drinking Tequila.
# 2 – Never pole dance with a cue stick as your pole.
# 3 – Never pole dance over tile.
# 4 – Never Never Ever combine all three above all at once.
Thanks for sharing, James from MMA punk.

@SafariDave, I make it a point to never drink tequila. Every time I do, I end up fighting something stationary. I probably shouldn’t say exactly what happened online, buuuut my hands and elbows didn’t feel so hot when the tequila motivation ran out.

Having the passion and desire to do something with your life is the best feeling in the world. Once I knew what I wanted to do, my “heart” all of a sudden exploded with motivation. Make sense?

@SafariDave, I aint never scuuuured. Okay, well the last time I was given tequila I ended up fighting a parked car. Why? No clue. It didn’t have mirrors, windshield wipers or a spoiler after our talk. I didn’t have feeling in my hands or elbows for awhile so I call it an even fight.

@Anthony @ Bounce House Rental, haha omg that’s pretty funny. Not sure I’ve ever heard of someone taking on a parked car when picking a fight. Good call, you both walked away with minor injuries. Yours being less expensive of course.

I don’t know about heart but this guy sure has guts! I couldn’t take that kind of punishment if I was Clark Kent. My problem is I got too much heart, can’t drive by the animal shelter without fostering out yet another mutt, can’t dress down an employee that has a husband out of work and a little one that needs special care. I guess I just wasn’t cut out to be a boss. Good news is I got the heart to come here every day (work) and be happy about it!

@Dick@paysonweb,

having to much heart is better than having no heart. Some of us was born with heart some of born with a to bigger heart but either way at least we’ve got heart there are some sicko’s out there with no heart at all. I would be less stressed with a boss like you lol..

Damn John,
Here you got me thinking I was “unstoppable” and then you go and show me that leg picture! I may have heart, but not enough heart to take that kind of beating! OUCH.
Still, your points are well taken. You need to have heart AND believe you are unstoppable to succeed in business. Good tips!
Steve
PS. Next time can you go back to the pretty girls when you’re picking a picture. They have plenty of heart too! :)

Did you hear about Scott Junk in Hawaii this past weekend? He got kicked in the groin by Brazil’s Fabiano Scherner and the fight was called off a no contest after 27 seconds. Scott’s being trained under Roy Nelson, I think he had the heart but a kick in that particular area would bring any man down.

I think having heart in sports, and im sure in business, is the number one key. I’ve seen soccer games with 7 players against 11 players because of unfortunate events, and the 7 players won because they had heart. They laid it out their on the field.
I can have heart to play with the odds against me, but there is a difference when I can only hobble on one leg. Lol, I don’t think I could take half as many kicks as that guy and continue on

very true that most of people would like to get ‘one sentence advice for success…. but if they’ll get one of this sort (with Urijah Faber’s leg example) they’ll get discouraged… sad but true

Yes I agree, we all must have heart in all times, but don’t let your heart be tread on by others we must know our rights.

Came here checking the popular posts of may 2010.

I have to say I am a big fan of sports. And I agree that sports persons need to show big heart. Some people have remarkable ups and downs (Jennifer Capriati is my favorite example).

But I feel business people have it much more difficult. I am not saying this simply because I am not a sports professional. I know the training for sports folks can be grueling. But those who display extraordinary heart on the field, have a distinct advantage. They do it only for a short period of time.

On the contrary, people who slug it out in business, need to be at it for much much longer period of time. And there is no glamour either. Not to mention that there is no one watching what happens and hardly anyone caring about the outcome.

I would say, having a heart is much tougher in business than it is in sports.
