I recently posted a blog post titled “Blog Posting on Steroids” in which I briefly discuss some of the side effects in regards to the steroids I am currently taking (prescribed), and I also list something like 20 blog posts that I have scheduled for release. I have been on a writing tear.
In that blog post blogger DiTesco of iBlogzone commented in regards to how many blog posts I have in a day and how hard it is to keep up with all of them. I responded to DiTesco’s comment and sat and thought about it for a while, maybe he has a great point, maybe 3-4 blog updates in a day are too much for my readers. I wouldn’t want the people that read this stuff and especially people that subscribe to my rss feed feeling overwhelmed by my updates, that would be pretty counter productive to keeping subscribers.
I decided there was no better place to get the answer to my question than right here on my blog, I even decided to do something a little different with this one and created a WOP Poll so that I could track the results over time and see what people think.
Since I am such a greedy bastard I expect everyone to vote and leave a comment with your thoughts on how many blog updates are too many, or better yet tell me the maximum number of updates you think a blog should really have.

It depends on what you’re writing: publishing more is good, and if your audience likes to talk on posts, then I think someone could publish up to 4-5 times a day.
Still, I’d say once a day is the usual rule if you’re not sure about the community you’ve got. Writing more doesn’t mean your blog promotes itself; one has to put a blog in a position where writing more will result in more activity and automatic promotion.

@ashok, there is certainly no sense in writing even two posts a day if no one is going to read them.
More posts = more traffic in my opinion, DiTesco just made me curious
@Extreme John, I just posted today and I’m already kinda regretting it because it was too rushed for what I wanted to talk about.
I used to guest post on a friend’s blog and that was easier: I just put up links and brief comments and kept the updates flowing.
But yeah, if I could think more and keep difficult issues organized well, I would be thrilled to post twice a day. I kinda need the content.
Your posts today are quite nice – I hope I get to commenting on all of them.

Posting more will give more options for readers. I really don’t think there is a such a thing as too much content. People will read what suits them. The more the merrier. One of your posts may be what one reader wants to read and another may fit someone else.
It’s all about doing what suits you the most. If you’re motivated and writing a lot, that’s wonderful. Most writers have dry spells and so if you’re not then take advantage of that.
You might also save some of those posts for a week that you may want to take some time off to rest.
All the best,
Eren

OK, where’s the WOP poll?
Anyway, 4 a day is way to many for me to read on a daily basis. I reckon not only is one a day ample, it would also mean that each post would get more comments. Heck, I don’t even post daily, but then I obviously don’t have as much free time as you Yanks.

@Asswass, good question. Pasted the code into Wordpress, no luck.
The code is still there now.

@Extreme John, Damn that’s weird. You need to paste it on the HTML code and save the post. If you change to the “Visual” window then the code will dissapear.

@Asswass, I have the poll working now.
Now you see why I don’t use polls though
They take away from comments and they kill efficiency.
Twitter: extremejohn
@Sire, got the poll working Sire.
As for the updates I hate when blogs don’t update daily it drives me crazy when I go to read and there’s nothing in the reader. Than it comes in droves, perfect example yesterday barely anything to read, two days before that 130 posts to read.
The inconsistency kills me.
Twitter: mmodotcom
I think the number really depends on what you are writing about and who are your followers. There are those Celebrity entertainment blogs that can post dozens of short posts a day and it keep the readers attention.
I think if you got something you want to say and it is relevant why not post it?
As for our MMO blog… if we can get one post out a day I am happy. Not only is it hard to come up with new stuff each day when you have a real specific niche… but I also like to give readers enough time to leave a comment before popping out another post… which might get them to miss the last one.

@Doug Dillard, we have the same situation with my Insane Limos blog, it’s a mainstream business site geared towards customer service. Updating that daily would be extremely difficult.

@Extreme John, Yep… I can see that.
I think we are going to start to write more about the different projects we have going and take people in… to show them the different ways we are trying to generate income online. Hopefully we will be entertaining and teaching at the same time… and maybe we will get some help on the way with the comments people leave.

I think you post perfectly, it’s actually nice knowing that I might be missing some of your posts when I’m at least partially assured that there will be at least one post for me to read over when I get here
So I guess I’m possibly the wrong person to ask, since I’d be happy with a thousand posts a day!!
Though, in that case I wouldn’t want a notification of every single one, rather a daily notification with a list of all the day’s posts.

I don’t think is too much John. If readers can’t keep up with all your posts then they should subscribe to your RSS Feed.

All this extra work drives me bananas. Haha.

I don’t think you can every do too many posts per day (example techcrunch) – always means more traffic and blog posts for everyone, not just whichever niche you’re writing about that day. However, don’t burn yourself out and make sure you’re setting up a nice reserve of posts for when you don’t feel like writing. At least, that’s my theory.

Hi John,
I don’t think 3-4 blog updates are too much since I enjoy reading (well, I think it depends on the reader too). My friend usually write about 4-5 updates and I don’t mind reading them all. I love reading people’s blog and give comment on them
I think the most important is the quality of the writing.
Twitter: extremejohn
@Kevin, thank you Kevin I appreciate the feedback. Also took out that handy “Laptops” link in the signature, thank you.
@Extreme John, Hey, no problem John, it’s just a habit to put my sig in commenting. hahahaha
Twitter: extremejohn
@Kevin, no problem Kevin I appreciate you stopping by and commenting
Twitter: myblog2day
I think 1-2 blog updates should be good, but it depends on who is your reader and what they want. I used to read many blogs a day, so usually I will only read 1 blog post for a day and it takes almost hours for me to read and leave a comment.
But I won’t be tired to read more posts if you insert some “hot” and “spicy” photos in the posts.
Twitter: extremejohn
@Lee Ka Hoong, there’s nothing wrong with 4 blog posts with hot and spicy girls in them, but I don’t want to spoil you guys.
Twitter: myblog2day
@Extreme John, you’re right John. Sometimes I get bored if keep looking at the hot & spicy girls too. I’ll still prefer more tips on how to improve our blog.

Try shaking it up a bit. Post one long and one short every day for a while. Create “series” posts. Combine stuff in your queue.
On the other hand, having a lot of articles in your queue is a “high quality problem.”

I only blog once a day, but have been known to be daring and post twice in one day
I think it all depends on what a blogger is blogging about, if the posts are really interesting and worth reading, then ok. I find that if I have several things to blog about in one day, I will schedule them over a few days, it keeps my blog fresh

Two would be the max for me. One a day is great and I’ll check my reader again at the end of the day and perhaps read another post, but I am not about to read three or four more. At the end of the day everything gets ‘marked as read’.

I limit my blog posts to 3x per week. I think anything over twice per day is excessive.
If you have that many ideas floating around. The way I look at it, why not drip feed your content so that you have a steady stream of it for your blog instead of putting everything out at once?!
…just my $0.02
Twitter: extremejohn
@Flippa Chick, I can see where that should be taken into consideration, all though doing so removes the “variety factor” for readers somewhat.

Hello John, hope you have just a sec to vote and possibly even comment on my Vacation WOP about Guns in Bars in Arizona. Who knows, it might lead to a WOP for you about Guns In Limos In Florida, a state with similar gun laws to us here in Arizona. Don’t worry I am not a “cause” idiot for gun control or against – just a former travel agent who is seeing Arizona tourism suffer with the bad press. You of all people should relate to this as owner of a Limo service, remember those poor tourists in Florida’s rest areas a few years ago and what that did to Florida’s tourism, it’s happening here thanks to Arthur Frommer saying it isnt safe to come here. Just because some idiot sported an assault weapon during Obama’s visit here. Any idea what Florida might be saying about Arizona’s problems?

.-= Dick´s last blog ..Media And NRA In Feeding Frenzy Over Guns In Arizona Bars =-.
Four posts a day is certainly a lot. However, I do not think that it is too much for the reader, because not everyone is interested in every topic. While I enjoy your sports posts, I’m sure that you have readers who just want to see the hot pics of beautiful young girls. I enjoy them myself also. Keep those coming.
It’s like at the supermarket. You don’t go there thinking you will buy everything on the shelf. You buy what you need and leave the rest. Same thing here, people read what strikes their fancy. The rest gets read later on, maybe.
My vote is that if you have the post written, go ahead and publish. Your blog will be stronger for it.
Twitter: extremejohn
@Keith@Canadian Prescriptions, I need to go back and check traffic stats to see how the heavy post days compare to regular post days.
Twitter: makingamilliond
I feel a couple blog posts a day is good. If you are doing more just schedule them into the future. I usually have time to read a couple of posts, but any more than this is too much usually and would rather just read a couple a day. I usually like more frequent post as in every so many days a blog is being updated so that is why if you are motivated to write, just write a bunch one night but schedule them out into the future. Like you blog and your businesses look really cool. Have a good one. Steve

I voted that 3 is enough but I also think it depends on the blogger and his blog. For example techcrunch do multiple posts per day but I think 1-2 posts per day is enough.
But… If you post multiple posts per day and still get a great response with comments, views and other stats then do more.

Twitter: ComplaintMan
Like many said above, I think it depends on your content and audience. It also depends on if you’re worried about your Alexa rating too. If you want a low Alexa rating, you need to pump four to eight updates a day, I think (if you really want to get low). But yeah, I enjoy reading your updates and think a few per day is fine.

@The Constant Complainer, thats interesting about the Alexa rankings I never even thought about that, I guess that plays into that number getting better. Hmmmm (evil thoughts) haha.

I don’t think to have a limit must be necessary. It depens on you. If you can write 4, 5, or 6 updates a day, go ahead.
Twitter: smartbloggerz
I think it depends on what kind of blog you have and how much traffic it receives.
Suppose if TechCrunch only updates 3-4 times a day then it will surely affect it’s revenue and popularity which will be too bad for it.
I think you should update your blog according to your topic and how big is your community or blog.

I say for a personal blog, post as often as you want. After all, a personal blogger blogs for THEMSELVES. But for a business blog, it is important to make updates on a regular basis without having many gaps between posts OR suddenly having a flood of posts. These sudden changes in posting habits is likely to make some valuable readers stray from reading the blog.
