JS-Kit Blog Commenting System Test

by Extreme John on August 17, 2009 |

I hope everyone had an exciting and safe weekend, before we kick the week off I wanted to take a moment to explain the JS-Kit Commenting system that I am currently testing called ECHO. I’m sure this is exactly what everyone wanted me to lay on them first thing on a Monday morning, but here goes.

As my blog continues to grow the reality is that the current WordPress commenting system makes managing and replying to each comment that all of you leave a complete pain in the ass, it takes twice as long as it would if I had a different commenting system, or at least that’s my current thought.

echo-js-kit

Now here’s the thing that is important for me to point out while this new JS-Kit commenting system “Echo” gets integrated to the site, I need you to be patient because the integration is not close to complete yet. If it were up to me it would be completely installed because I hate going to bed without projects completed, however getting JS-Kit installed and off the ground is not entirely up to me.

In regards to JS-Kit not being completely 100% on this site it’s due to the fact that my comment database is too big for the typical data merge, which means I had to write JS-Kit support and ask them to do the comment merging so that none of our previous comments are lost.

I also updated my account to the “Live” version of Echo which is something that will allow full comment interaction as if this were a forum, something else I had to write JS-Kit about and ask them how long the account upgrade takes to show.

Now before I get out of here let me be clear in saying that as of right now I am just “Testing” JS-Kit, doing so allows me to show some of you how this process goes and allows me to share my experience with the Echo commenting system. I will also say that as of right now this isn’t really off to a good start and I really hope it doesn’t become more fuel for Hell Week this week, I hate writing emails to ask people to do things that should be automated and I hate when account upgrades do not show right away, that’s two strikes.

I do ask that you all be patient while this JS-Kit integration either happens or does not happen, take a moment to leave a comment or a test comment of sorts in this post it will help you get familiar with the JS-Kit commenting system. The JS-Kit system does have some excellent features which will give all of you more options to comment and more ways to choose how you want to be logged in when you comment, for example you can login with Facebook or Twitter and post comments.

I hope everyone has a great day, I am trying to get this written before I run out of the house on what will be a very busy Monday, but before I go I wanted to say thanks to Asswass for posting a cool Insane Limos poll on his blog HiBurrito.com, he has a pretty bad ass looking system going on over there check it out and tell him EJ sent you and be sure to vote for your favorite Insane Limos limousine.

UPDATE: Monday August 17, 2009 – 9:17am

I received my second follow up to the email that I sent out yesterday that the JS-Kit plugin prompted me to send, the first email was assuring me that someone in tech had been notified in regards to the data transport not working and the account update not showing. Below you will see a snippet from the email (in order to keep things confidential), at this point I am starting to consider going to a different system, however since I do have a fair amount of work to get done I will hang tight for as long as my patience will let me. I will keep you posted.

“Your request has been received and put into the queue for processing.
We will investigate this issue and contact you at the first
opportunity.

Thank you.”

UPDATE: August 17, 2009 @ 4:25pm

I am trying to be as patient as possible, I will give JSkit Echo until midnight than I will pull the plug on the plugin and move on, as much as I appreciate the reassuring response I need to see some results.

I thought the tech at Disqus was terrible, but at least I was able to merge my comments to the Disqus system. If I can’t get the comments merged into Echo there is really no reason to even have it, pretty or not.

UPDATE: August 17, 2009 8:48pm

Well since I haven’t heard back from JSkit I decided I would jump on and shoot a quick email over before I take this to the next level, haha. Next level whaaaaat. Just ask Big T, ok I am gonna stop. I shot over  a quick email before I put this to bed and get back to the old system until I find a WordPress threaded comment plugin that can get the job done. Here’s my email to the head tech and Chris.

Ok just looking for an update or an answer from someone, it’s been 24hrs and honestly everything is exactly the same and Im getting pissed off.

If JSkit Echo is that good than someone needs to get my comments moved or admit that the comments can’t be moved for whatever reason, that way I can move on an so can you guys.

I am being more than patient but if this isn’t gonna happen let’s stop pretending it is and let’s move on so I can find a solution that fits my blog.

Hey John, I’ve seen other blogs using this and it does look pretty good, looking forward to seeing what you think about it after a bit of hefty testing ;)

I noticed there’s something changed earlier but didn’t leave a message as unfamiliar about it. Great to have you mentioning about this in latest post. I’m trying it out, hopefully the comment will get through successfully. ^^

John, I’ve noticed I can’t find your SU acc anywhere. Is there a glitch somehow? Hopefully things are all right.

I’ve featured your 16 free images of do-follow in my site as well as I think some will definitely like the cool ones you’ve displayed. Very neat indeed! Best wishes!

Your stumbleupon account. I’ve tried to gain access to it but seems like there’s a prob with it. It’s extremejohn.stumbleupon.com right?

Reply

extremejohn August 17, 2009 at 11:51 am

Yeah that would be because Stumble Upon sucks, they decided to freeze my account and a few people I know for no reason what so ever. They can shove it now.

Depends how long the process takes, the largest part of my hefty testing will be.

1) Do the good folks leaving comments like it
2) Is it fast
3) Is it reliable
4) Is it Do Follow
5) Will I be able to easily integrate Comment Luv into it, something I am playing with now
6) Can I count on support to answer my concerns or resolve my issues in a timely fashion
7) Will it increase discussion here on EJ

Another reason why we should have blogs huh? ;)
No problem, you have a strong network here. People are more engaging here I can see that. Keep up the good work, you’ve been quite a big help to many.

Hi ExtremeJohn :)

It appears that you are already running JS-Kit Live – Import of old comments should happen very soon!

Congrats on getting Echo installed and thanks for your patience with the upgrade process. I think you will love the system once it gets settled on the site.

Cheers,

Chris – JS-Kit Team

I will continue to be patient knowing that your following the process, I will also be reviewing Echo of course.

I am excited about you having a comment system that allows for replies to individual comments. I actually wrote a post about it yesterday. I am sure this will make your blog even more interactive than it already is John!

Reply

extremejohn August 17, 2009 at 1:07 pm

I hope your right Doug the one thing I like about it already is the reply to feature, it was chewing up my time trying to go through the admin to deal with comments.

extremejohn August 17, 2009 at 2:46 pm

I am fortunate enough to have so many great people that comment and make this blog what it is, hopefully this tie in of Echo will work out.

Does this means all our other comments were lost?

This article had so many awesome comments… http://www.extremejohn.com/blog-engage-review/

Hi John thanks for the link. Let me tell that this comment system is not easy to use but I finally managed to add a profile. I’m having a lot of trouble with my reply settings also and I just found out that my commentluv plugin isn’t working anymore. Does this system really work?

Reply

extremejohn August 17, 2009 at 4:18 pm

No, did you even read the post?

Reply

extremejohn August 17, 2009 at 4:23 pm

Thank you for the extra feedback in regards to creating a profile and the issues in regards to the reply settings, I give everyone the benefit of the doubt if Chriss says it the comments will be merged soon I will give him the chance to do that. *DONT_KNOW*

In my latest post, at the end I asked the question do people think if it is better to show the newest post at the top or the oldest. I wanted to see what advantages and disadvantages they saw. Well I have mad up my opinion already with your new comment system.

Advantages:
1) For you John… it might get more comments as commentors want to stay to the top of the comments.
2) For Commentors… like above they can get to the top easy, but probably won’t stay for long.

Disadvantages:
1) It is a lot harder to read (at least for me). For me… I like to read in progression and having the newest comments on the top confuses me a little. It might be because I am a little slow though ;)

Reply

bbrian017 August 17, 2009 at 7:29 pm

Yes I read your article

I didn’t read anything about old comments… simply that your testing this service out and apparently are about to remove it.

p.s. after I add my name and tab I get sent to the top of the page it’s odd…

extremejohn August 17, 2009 at 8:09 pm

Doug I hate the latest comment on top in EVERY scenario, thats one of the things on my review list.

I swear if you bastards don’t appreciate what I am going through with this test Im gonna lose it. haha.

That is really weird, as the clock continues to tick this situation only gets worse.

First time, I’ve heard of this comment system. I like the way it looks, but does it take out the link in the comment to my site and the do follow?

I was thinking about using Disqus, but I might have to wait to see what your review of this is.

Reply

bbrian017 August 17, 2009 at 9:53 pm

Well at least it will be there soon just in the future!

I Like the set up! I guess I should make my profile…

Hmmmm… I guess the extra work (extra clicks, extra typing) happens only on the first ever comment.

What, StumbleUpon froze your account? What the… It was actually because of your post about the wonders of StumbleUpon that got me convinced to join StumbleUpon very recently. And now they just freeze accounts without warning and explanation? Kinda like freezes my enthusiasm too. :( 8-)

I can’t believe you went for JS-Kit blog commenting system. They are amongst the worst I have seen >:o. Better than this are Intense debate and Disqus.

Reply

extremejohn August 18, 2009 at 8:05 am

I hate the layout of the intense debate comment form, I did consider it.

If I don’t test this shit and put it up here, than who will :)

Reply

extremejohn August 18, 2009 at 8:07 am

Haha yeah Stumble Upon can def go screw themselves, I get them more viewers and people using their system and they freeze accounts.

Reply

extremejohn August 18, 2009 at 8:08 am

Yes two of my largest concerns are the Comment Luv situation and the link loss on the username, both things that will be addressed one way or the other.

I will be calling Chris today to discuss a few things in regards to JSkit and find out a little bit more before I make any final decision.

As everyone can see at this point I deactivated the JSkit Wordpress Plugin for threaded comments and additional features, I have a review schedule this week.
