Every once in a while I step outside of what I consider my safe zone and post information on here that I know competitors will see, yet I know it might help another tanning salon owner somewhere else. I know within a few minutes of this post going up someone will shoot me a text message or email and ask me if I’m crazy telling people about our Facebook advertising campaigns for Extreme Tan and Smoothies. Just for the record I will not be discussing our specific marketing campaigns in any detail that I feel is out of the ordinary for what we typically do with our small business, those things will be saved for another time.
Any of you that subscribe to my rss feed, read my blog daily or connect with me via my Facebook fan page probably have a pretty good idea of just how much I love marketing, there’s just something about it that gets me fired up. As one would imagine I focus a lot more of my marketing and advertising energy on social networking sites like Facebook and other marketing avenues like Google AdWords now more then ever. There was a time that all of my marketing focus was on radio advertising, billboard ad campaigns, print and TV commercial advertising. Never anything substantial online.
Facebook Advertising Graph
No big shocker here, Facebook has a decent little stats center for their small business advertisers. The below screen shot is of the “Impressions” graph. It is important to note that I do not purchase Facebook advertising based on impressions, or any advertising for that matter.
Facebook Ad Campaign: Spray Tan Special
The below is a screen shot of the ad preview for a spray tanning special that we run from time to time promoting Extreme Tan and Smoothies spray tan services, etc.
Facebook Ad Campaign: Free Tan Voucher
Here is another example of a free tan voucher that we offer, I wrote about that giveaway in my “Massive Facebook Giveaway for Facebook Likes” post.
I doubt any of you are jumping out of your seat with excitement about the amazing content of this post, if nothing else you can tell someone you wasted 10 minutes of your life on Extreme John.com one day…. reading about Facebook advertising. By then Facebook might be as popular as My Space is now. (buddum bump)
Typically when I write a quick post like this a few readers will write me in regards to something minor that I should have included in the post in the first place. Trying to save some of those emails from coming in I will now attempt to add something of value to this post. Wish me luck.

What is the difference between Pay Per Click vs Pay Per Impression advertising?
When you purchase individual clicks on an ad you are bidding X amount and paying that amount each time someone clicks your ad. Many find this to be a more “targeted” form of obtaining leads. When you purchase impressions you are paying to have your advertisement exposed X amount of times regardless of how active or inactive clicks on your ad might be.
Example:
Pay Per Click (PPC) or Cost Per Click (CPC) as Facebook puts it at $1.07 per click with a max budget of $20 per day would yield a potential of 18 clicks on your ad. Please keep in mind that clicks are not sales, they do however lead to potential sales.
Pay Per Impressions (CPM) at a bid of $.40 per 1000 impressions would yield you 50,000 impressions. Impressions do not necessarily mean you will get clicks nor does it mean you will generate sales. Many feel that this form of advertising is great for branding when not focusing on hard, instant results.
O.k I think this is pretty much a wrap at this point. Feel free to leave a comment or hit the share button if you enjoyed the last 10 minutes of your life here on Extreme John.com.
Have a productive day.
P.s. Here’s another TV commercial, assuming you clicked through to the one I linked in the post above. This one was done for the Insane Limos Ford F-650 “Andre” about two years ago.

Can’t really complain when something sparks a fresh new idea.
The idea isn’t bad at all, actually its far better because as we all know there are so many facebook users around the world. It’s an advantage for any business to have a slot in facebook advertising.

I think for me even at this stage of the game I am fascinated with what exactly Facebook users are willing to click on or prefer to click on.

I remember when that commercial originally aired. I think you did it during TUF or something.
I’m intrigued by FB advertising, so this was interesting to read. And I also saw, but did not purchase, a book at Borders the other days called “Make Money with Twitter.” LOL. Point being – many businesses are migrating towards using social networking web sites for advertising. And I tend to prefer clicks vs. impressions.

I would agree I am more of a clicks vs impressions kind of guy. There is money to be made with Twitter, heck ive done it for over a year but it’s time consuming and unless your pushing a product that your tied to it’s a little tough to push that ball. Especially with so many others trying to “make money using Twitter”, if you know what I mean. I think it’s more the combo of all social media than just Twitter or Facebook.

Had a similar conversation with the guy @ SmartBloggerz via Facebook and it seems as though Facebook ads are mainly for branding. Facebook users aren’t really out in search of information, goods and services. That’s what Google is there for.

I would agree. I feel like Facebook is to get your company branded and allow the viewers to search your company name. Facebook links do make it very easy for a viewer to conveniently check out a website, if they were inclined to.
I have been thinking long and hard about starting an advertising campaign using adwords, but this is the first time I have heard about using Facebook. Is it more expensive or less than adwords, and how are your results compared to adwords? Thanks for the info!
I agree… pay per impression might be ‘ok’ for branding or getting your name out, however it’s now a method I would choose to experiment with!
I do not mind PPC though as you can target your keywords and have some control.
I’ve enjoyed reading your posts… you are quite divers and obviously do well. Must be because of your passion!
