It really has been a long time since I’ve taken the time to write a post about social media or social networking and how I use social media on a daily basis in each of the business’s that we currently own and operate. While I was driving in to work this morning I started to think about what different giveaways or contests we could have today on our Extreme Tan and Smoothies Facebook page when I realized that I probably should write a post and share some of the things we have been doing lately.
I really started to get active and find ways to use social media as an additional outlet for our small business and of course as an excellent tool to connect with our customers on a daily basis. This worked great during the indoor tanning season btw. The more I use social media to connect with our customers, associates and other local small business owners the more I find myself looking for even more ways to use social media to connect and share. One of my favorite things about social media is the ability to connect instantly with others, especially when it comes to having random giveaways and contests. I have been doing random giveaways via my Twitter account and Facebook fan page for well over a year now and within the last six months I have really stepped up our social media presence for our chain of indoor tanning salons and our limousine business, Insane Limos.
One of the major things that we stepped up was the giveaways that not only I was doing but the overall giveaways done at any of the business’s that we own. Personally I love the surprise giveaways because I can jump on the Extreme Tan and Smoothies Facebook fan page and have a random giveaway at 10pm and the response is great, I love seeing our customers excited.
Here is a screen shot from a random giveaway that I decided to do one night at 10:41pm on the Extreme Tan and Smoothies Facebook page.
In addition to doing random or surprise giveaways on our small business Facebook pages I also do random giveaways on my personal Facebook Fan page, like the giveaway I will be announcing very soon. Here’s a screen shot of my status update letting everyone know that I will be doing some kind of giveaway very soon, you might notice I also tagged Insane Limos in my status update so that our Insane Limos Facebook fan page fans would see that something was brewing.
I really don’t want to spend all day posting screen shots of the various giveaways that we do on the numerous social networking sites that we do them on because I’m sure it would get pretty boring. I do plenty of giveaways on my Twitter account @extremejohn as well as the Insane Limos twitter @insanelimos and even have a few splash pages that support our social media program like Tan for Cash.com.
Over the course of the last six months I have given away free years of tanning, free spray tans, free tanning lotion and products as well as free limousine rides, wedding package giveaways and more totaling over $15,000 in social media giveaways. I can’t take all of the credit though because I have excellent support and people behind me that help it all come together and often go out of their way get my last minute giveaways and ideas out there, that cred goes to the awesome folks at Extreme Tan and Smoothies and Insane Limos.
P.s. I would also like to add that I recently used my Ustream account to pull the winner for the random $1000 Tan for Cash giveaway that we did, next time around I need to remember to actually SAVE the video.

Freebies and giveaways are nice expression of gratitude. If only I can find something to give away, perhaps I can attract more connections.

@Walter, everyone has something to offer
This is interesting to hear – it does seem that social media works well with giveaways generally. I gotta wonder for myself whether that are other sorts of ways to make engagement on social media exciting: I think I end up talking at people more often than talking to them.

@ashok, I think the sole fact that I am addicted to it makes it that much more exciting and of course makes me just want to continue to do more.
