My Trip to the Animal Emergency Hospital

by Extreme John on May 6, 2009 |

I would like to start off by saying thank you to everyone that wrote me on Twitter and text me in regards to my late night trip to the Animal Hospital last night, I appreciate everyone’s support. Any of you that might not follow me on Twitter or see my status updates on Facebook might not know that I made the trip last night. As you can see by the picture of Reagan he is doing much better than he was around 10:00 last night.

My 13 month old Male English Bulldog Reagan

Last night around 10pm we saw Reagan rubbing his face on the wood floors in our the pool table room, a lot of dogs do that to put their scent onto whatever item they are doing it to. At first I thought this was exactly what reagan was doing, but I quickly realized something else was up. I called Reagan and he tried to come to me (I was on the lanai), but he couldn’t stop the itching of his face and his back he was going crazy. He finally made it out of the doggy door while I was heading inside, he instantly ran and jumped onto one of the couches outside and started doing the same thing.

I was able to grab a hold of Reagan and when I did I noticed his face was very hot, especially the areas he was rubbing all over everything. Reagan’s lips and entire face was a bright red color, he normally has a pink face from rubbing it around in the grass kinda looks like he dolls himself up a little bit. I instantly thought that Reagan might have stuck his face somewhere that caused him to get extremly itchy on his face and quickly went to get a puppy wipe and a wet rag to wipe anything off of his face that might have been on there irritating him.

Even after washing Reagan’s face and cleaning all of those fat bulldog folds he was still freakin out, people I tell you it was pretty wild. I went to get more wet paper towels and made them cold to try and cool his face down a little, thinking maybe he just severly irritated it. In the mist of getting the wet paper towel Reagan rolled onto his back to itch, this is when I noticed he had all kinds of crazy hives on his stomach. The hives were so bad I could see them through his fur where he is white, his hair also started to look like someone had tried to rip it out by the roots.

I knew at this point Reagan who was breathing extremely heavy and is still going crazy was in some trouble, I had some meds here from a few weeks ago when he fell asleep and rolled off the couch and landed on his back on the concrete and instantly gave him a pill. While giving Reagan his medicine I noticed the corners of his eyes looked pretty puffy, but everything on a English Bulldog is puffy so it can be hard to tell sometimes.

By the time I called the Animal Hospital and ended my phone call, Reagan’s eyes were swelled completley shut and his breathing pattern had gotten worse. I changed real quick and got Reagan loaded into the car and headed to the ER, it felt like it took forever and a day to get there… Imagine a place where even at 10:30pm there is still traffic and you hit every light regardless if you are on a “busy” road or not. Sorry I hate Florida roads.

I arrived at the hospital about 15 minutes later with Reagan still in very poor shape, they said he had an allergic reaction to something but there was no way of really telling what it was. They treated Reagan as “critical” which had them dragging him off to the back for a couple of shots. After he recieved his shots I had to stay at the ER with him for about another hour, Reagan is on Benadryl and doing much better now. :)

Hi extremejohn,

I would say that you really have a soft-spot on animals! How lucky Reagan to have someone like you!

Instances like that happens,I’m glad that you really took an effort to drive him to the hospital!

Extend my regards to Reagan and hoping he’ll be fine always! ;)
