RockMelt is a new browser currently in beta testing. Rock Melt is built on the Google Chrome browser platform, which means those of you us that currently use Google Chrome as our default browser will have no problem getting comfortable with RockMelt. One of the key reasons that I see RockMelt becoming a power player in the browser game is due to the fact that @RockMelt is built on the premiss of taking full advantage of social media and social networking through sites like Facebook and Twitter.
I was fortunate enough to receive an invite to try RockMelt browser out as it sits in it’s current beta testing stage, being the social media addict that I am I couldn’t wait for the invite to show up in my email. I wondered if RockMelt would be the browser to put my Google Chrome and HootSuite social media manager to sleep, I mean if it has ALL of the social tools I need then why bother with anything else.
Here’s a list of the things that I found were best about RockMelt and a couple of things I don’t like so much about the new social browser.
Reasons RockMelt Browser Rules
1. Centralized Workspace
With RockMelt there’s less of a need to leave my current browser window and tab because of the handy little “edges” that RockMelt adds on each side of the actual browsing area. Without leaving my current page I can see how many new tweets and Facebook status updates there have been since my previous look.
RockMelt Browser Video
2. Google Chrome Extensions
Because RockMelt is built on the Google Chrome platform you can take advantage of those Chrome extensions you’ve come to love. Note this comes with a disclaimer, see below.
3. Facebook Integration and Options
The Facebook edge is pretty sweet it allows you to mark specific family members, friends and other connections as favorites. You can toggle between your favorites” and a handy little option to see what connections are currently online, not limited to your favorites.
4. Twitter Integration
RockMelt works Twitter integration into the social browser very nicely, it looks good, it’s fast and simple. I can easily see what mentions I have @extremejohn or check the latest tweets from the people that I follow, not to mention it highlights the unread tweets and shades the ones I’ve seen already. Big time saver when I’m skimming.
5. Sharing
Duh… #RockMelt is a social browser, which means that sharing is not only caring, but super easy. No leaving my browser to share a few things with people I connect with on Facebook and via my Facebook Fan Page.
6. Simplicity
Adding, and adjusting things with RockMelt browser is very simple. Drag and drop your friends on the Facebook edge to align them the way you want, align your Google Chrome extensions the way you want on the extensions edge.
7. Search Design
I like the search feature, it displays your search results instantly with a short summary and when it’s clicked it is lightning fast opening up for full display in an actual tab.
8. Google Chrome Sync
I probably should have payed better attention to the sync process when I decided to move forward with that process, everything went smooth with the exception it dumped my synced bookmarks into a separate folder and it failed to sync the bookmarks bar directly. Even with not being a fan of exactly “how” I synced things with RockMelt and Google Chrome, I’m just excited about the fact that RockMelt offered to sync with Chrome in the first place.
RockMelt can also be synced with Firefox and Safari.
9. Design
RockMelt looks great, let’s face it… it’s Google Chrome with some wings slapped on the side and maybe a few leather accents on the inside. If you like Google Chrome design, your going to look at the RockMelt browser design and think, “Why didn’t I think of this?”
10. Weight
I’m a MacBook Pro user and certain software or applications that aren’t native to Mac can really hold performance down, RockMelt is Mac compatible and it doesn’t hold anything down. RockMelt performs quick, connects you to your Facebook, Twitter and just about everything else and does it like a 135lb Urijah Faber would. FAST!
Reason RockMelt Browser Doesn’t Rule
1. Google Chrome Extensions
I know I mentioned that one of the reasons I liked RockMelt was that I get to use Google Chrome extensions. When it comes to Google Chrome extensions and browser add-ons they play a major role in my continued use of a browser. When I used Firefox the add-ons were a key reason behind why I used it, then it became to heavy and I tried Google Chrome, I love the Chrome extensions and they have the ones I am use to. When I tried Safari for a few months I did it because I wanted to take advantage of 1Password for Mac, up until recently that wasn’t an option in Google Chrome.
Bottom line the extensions and how they function are important to me, and all though almost all of my extensions perform the way they are suppose to there are a few that don’t. A good example would be the Google Voice extensions for Chrome, it doesn’t perform the way it should, failing to play a sound upon incoming message and forcing a new tab vs a bubble pop-up. Same goes for the Gmail Checker extension that I use, no such luck on it showing me the total new messages waiting in my inbox.
2. Extension Placement
RockMelt puts all Google Chrome extensions on the right edge of the screen vs placing it above the bookmarks bar like traditional Google Chrome does. I don’t mind the social stuff on the right edge but I would prefer to have my extensions at the top above the bookmarks bar.
In Closing
Before I get out of here and enjoy the rest of the day I’ll say the same thing I always say when it comes to this type of stuff. Don’t base anything off of what I say, go out there and try it once RockMelt becomes available to the public. Try it, if you’re anything like me there’s a good chance you’ll find yourself using both Google Chrome and the new RockMelt browser.
Final Thought
Much like anything else I’m going to need a little more time to get use to RockMelt, time always seems to be the factor in how much I can tolerate certain things missing vs appreciating the new things something offers. I know at this stage of the game I still have Google Chrome open and I still have HootSuite open via my Fluid application HootSuite seems to be one of those tools that I just can’t live without as a small business owner, and thus far MarketMeSuite, Tweet Deck and Seesmic still can’t touch replacing HootSuite.
I also think it’s kind of funny that I am comparing the RockMelt browser to the HootSuite application, I guess that just goes to show you how powerful RockMelt is and stands to be moving forward.
P.s. In the middle of writing this post I was alerted via a Growl notification that RockMelt was ready for an update, the RockMelt browser update was simple and really happened so fast I barely had time to get the screen shot below.
Leave a comment with your thoughts on trying a new browser. What browser do you currently use and do you think your going to give RockMelt a try when it’s in full release?

Hey John, what an awesome and thorough! I watched someone’s screencast for RockMelt and it made my head spin. But you broke it down and compared exactly what I wanted to hear. HootSuite rules! and I can’t see replacing it with any other Twitter tool even if it does come as part of a browser.
I’m also a Chrome fan and based on what you said (especially at the end), I’ll probably wait until after a few more updates before I dive in and download it.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend John.

Funny that you mention a screen cast, I was going to add a screenr video to this and decided not to towards the end because the post was takaing me too long. I appreciate the kind words because to be totally honest with you, I thought for sure this post would be a dead beat. Felt I should have made it better.
Great Post EJ,
Lots of great info in that in depth post.
Especially like the Faber comparison.

I did try Google Chrome, but the lack of plugins drove me back to Firefox. I’m assuming that rockmelt being in beta also has a lack of plugins and so for now I’m still sticking with Firefox.
I’m really not all that into social media anyway so it’s not really a selling point. Still, it was a good writeup John, but then I wouldn’t expect any less from you.

Thank you Sire I appreciate it, keep in mind that RockMelt all though in the beta stage has the same extensions as Google Chrome, the same exact extensions.

I’ll keep it in mind John. I’ll be sure to let you know if I decide to give it a go.

I never say never John. I’m actually thinking about getting a Mac, and who knows what browser I will decide on when that happens.

Hey John, I’m using Mac but I haven’t installed Chrome yet. I think I better get on the ball and see what I’m missing. Thanks for the heads up on Rockmelt too. Good to know what to expect from it.

Thanks for commenting Estava. I would def suggest playing with Google Chrome if you use a Mac, I think you’ll notice the speed difference in every aspect of the browser over Firefox.

Hey John, good review. I have still just been playing around with Rockmelt too, but I do like it so far and see it has HUGE potential if they continue to upgrade it, same with MarketMeSuite… but I am using Hootsuite right now mainly because of the Facebook features.
I also sonticed some of the extensions don’t work like they do on Chrome but hopefully they can fix that or have new extensions built…

I do like how RockMelt is starting to learn what sites I’m visiting more frequently and showing me updates in the right edge so I can quick click to visit. Comes in handy for a lot of the business related blogs I read.
I use MarketMeSuite from time to time, but HootSuite is still by far the main deal for me. I can handle my Facebook, Twitter for numerous accounts, MySpace, LinkedIn and even Foursquare if I want to right from one spot. Not to mention the RT feature is so much faster and easier, love less steps. MarketMeTweet has a solid future as long as they keep the upgrades flowing.
Twitter: tonyknuckles
I’ve also dabbled in Rockmelt after receiving the invite. Having the extensions in the right is a huge distraction for me as well. I keep going back to Chrome.
Great visuals and writeup on the Rockmelt.

Hi John, I want to know if there’s such thing as configuring the Twitter client; I just installed RockMelt and it updates only once every 5 minutes or so, instead of every 10 or 15 seconds or whatever, and also I don’t have the search bar inside the window. Could you help me a bit please? I come from Flock because its Twitter client started failing. Thanks!

Hi Valentina thanks for commenting and coming by.
As for the moment there’s no way to change the interval at which your feeds are updated on your edges, I would be willing to bet it’s in the next update or somewhere nearby.
As for the search bar, please explain a little more so I can provide a better answer.

Wow, I never even heard of it John, thanks for the heads up!
I run 3 browsers now, Firefox, Explorer, and Chrome, mainly because I play a computer game that requires several profiles. Using the 3 browsers makes sure the profile cookies don’t conflict like they do when just using one browser. I also like having multiple browsers so I can see how my web sites and blogs look on each browser. As for the social media integration, I am just scratching the surface on that. I am still trying to digest Scvinger,LOL

I would hate the idea of running 3 browsers at one time, RockMelt made it so I went from running 2 browsers and 2 Fluid apps to running 1 Browser. I love it.
Thanks for the review, You have done a much more complete review than any of the others I see. This sounds like a great way to consolidate all the windows I currently use. I love my BlackBerry, it sounds like this will bring it all together in a similar way? I have signed up for a copy, but must have missed the cutoff. You mentioned you have an invite? I have been running both Firefox and Chrome, but get lost in the many windows I have open. I would love to simplify my browser maze.
Sorry about the invite query, I misread the link that brought me here. Thanks again for the review.

I hate running 3 Browsers too, but find it essential to check how all my websites and Blogs display on them. Also, I do searches with all 3 browsers to check my web position, and that of my competitors. Google Chrome is still displaying the 6 pack of local map results above the organic listings!
Firefox and Explorer do not.
BTW, this is a great Blog John, and especially this past week. You are doing a great job my Man!

I was waiting on Justins review of Rockmelt..didn’t know you did one.. and TY for using my header image
I watched the RM vid last week, and it did look cool.. but not sure I want Sso much GOING ON ON MY BROWSER. I have like 40 – 50 tabs open on FF every day,, adding all this would be a problem I think. I did like the social sharing and how easy it is..
But for me, I like visiting Twitter, and Facebook.
I shut my Digsby alerts for twitter and fb for this reason,, its to much lol
Twitter: extremejohn
Nothing like a header surprise. No doubt I can see where having 50 tabs open would already be more then enough for me, not thanks.
Twitter: ShotOfCoffee
Overall I like it, besides the surprise when I started to get a ton of Facebook chats.
I’m hoping for a way to add Facebook pages to the “edge” but other than that I have no complaints.

Nice reading the review. It will take a bit time to get used to any new additions. Moreover, I feel, until the extensions for browser are available, it will still have thin air. Anyway the sharing feature and integration of facebook and twitter, I guess are worthy.
Are those chrome extensions directly supported? That is awesome.

Hi Suresh and thank you for commenting. Extensions work fine with RockMelt as it’s built on the Chrome Browser platform (stated above).
Does the browser provide for multiple social media accounts to be accessed and posted to at the same time? Would love to have one tool to replace HootSuite, Hello Txt, PixelPipe, and Ping.fm.

Hey Tony thank you, I’m all set on RockMelt invites now. Thank you for taking the time to come by and comment I appreciate it.
Nice work, RockMelt, but one thing I must have missed: the status of my friends never gets updated. Those that are ‘online’ in the edge are not the same as those who are ‘online’ according to the FB status on its bottom ‘edge’.
Thanks much for the write-up! Quick question: where do you find it possible to sync with Firefox and/or Safari? I love this browser a lot (typing in the Mac version right now) but I’d really like to sync all my data to Firefox on my other machine. Any ideas?

I love RockMelt. It is much better than Flock, which is similar and chrome based. I really like Rockmelt’s interface, its simple and intuitive. Only thing I didn’t like about it was that it is limited to simply one profile per social network. I work on my business accounts more than my personal stuff, that is a huge limitation for me. Except for that limitation I would probably move over to it as well.

The problem with leaving one browser for another is all the cookies. I use Firefox because it remembers all my passwords, and data.
I wish there was a way to import all my firefox data into Google Chrome ?

Well it’s nice to see a browser that has some social media aspects built in, but the last thing we need is another browser to choose from. Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera and Dolphin all seem to work great. lol
