Twitter Tweets are Pointless

by Extreme John on August 12, 2009 |

As I sit here to write this quick blog post about how pointless tweets are on Twitter I can’t help but to think that I really don’t give a crap about what some survey or some tech genius says about Twitter and the tweets that are tweeted…………………. Sorry I had to take a quick break to tweet how pointless I think tweeting about how pointless Twitter is, is.

Now with that being said and out of the way I don’t think it’s pointless at all for people to tweet about twitter tweets being pointless, the actual percentage is that 40% of all tweets are pointless babble. So what, maybe reading pointless banter in the form of tweets puts a smile on my face after a long day of dealing with all kinds of b.s.

I happen to think it’s pretty hysterical that something like this comes out today, a day where we had a young lady call Insane Limos and reserve our Barbie Pink Hummer limo due to the “Twitter Special” we had been tweeting. We have numerous twitter accounts for the various business and online business’s that we have, we were tweeting a $250 OFF special from my Twitter account @extremejohn and the twitter acount for Insane Limos @insanelimos. I guess this was one of the times that we fell in the 60% bracket, because those tweets and the retweets of the Tweeps nice enough to follow me on Twitter and follow @insanelimos on twitter were much more than banter.

I guess before I head back over to Twitter to spew 40% useless banter and pointless trash I can probably share another success story as well, Twitter is also one of the largest contributors of traffic to my blog Extreme John. Maybe it’s ok if 40% of the things said on Twitter are pointless banter, do people need to be sold to in every sentence…. in every tweet? No, as a matter of fact I can’t stand being sold to on twitter it pisses me off, I would rather catch 40% of pointless banter than have sales and MLM schemes driven into my head 24hrs a day along with all of those “Get more Twitter followers” tweets.

Not only is Twitter completely useless, but it’s worthless for meeting people to network with.

Of course, I’m lying, I get lots of great traffic from Twitter and have created a lot of business relationships via Twitter.

I still laugh when thinking about how that cable representative contacted Lace on Twitter. Haha! Twitter has been down more than it has been up the past few weeks.

I’m still so and so when it comes to twitter… been a member for a few months soon, the first month I had TweetDeck open all day to follow tweets and such, but now I only open it up when I feel like checking what’s new – or in the mornings of course.

I think it’s hard to communicate properly with people on twitter, because you can’t do it “threaded” like with friendfeed, or facebook for that matter…

Funny you made this post just now – last night I was taking notes to a “5 reasons why twitter sucks”-post :D

But as long as I still get traffic from twitter when I tweet new blog posts, I’ll keep using it…

I am still trying to figure out how to use twitter myself. I wrote a post yesterday asking people how they used it and that post had the smallest amount of comments of any of my posts. I am thinking most people are like me and are still trying to figure out the best ways to utilize it.

I do like how you got business from it John, and I know there id definitely is potential… I think I just need to read more on it I guess.

I have some buddies that own a couple of beer pubs in San Diego and they use Twitter to let people know when they are have certain beers on tap, or when they are have beer dinners and they are having great success with it.

It is largely useless banter, but only if each update is looked at individually.. as a whole twitter – and by extension, Tweets – serve a variety of purposes.. Either way, it isn’t as pointless as studies done to determine its pointlessness

I certainly understand what you’re saying in this post. Most people seem to use Twitter as somewhere to talk to themselves and to obtain some attention. It’s a difficult one though as there is no obvious way to use Twitter and it’s very tempting for people to be self indulgent.

I just doubled my overall “socialness” with Twitter today thanks to a few tweets back and forth with Extreme John – thanks, John :D

Twitter is good from the point of view that businesss can keep customers informed with every last update, and blogs can inform their readers of every new post.

Twitter is bad/pointless from the point of view that it attracts self-absorbed attention whores, giving one the idea that everyone cares about what their cappucino tastes like, when in reality, no one cares.

I still tweet though :)

Am I correct in assuming that twitter is mainly used for business applications rather than social situations? Isn’t it kind of like an organized email list that you can give quick updates, advertisements, or posts to your “followers”? It sounds like some use it correctly to communicate with their “tweets” and drive business. No harm in that. Why would anyone use this to inform others of their favorite meal choices or whether or not they like the new Black Eyed Peas song? Maybe I am too old for twitter, cuz I just don’t get it. You kids today,as my parents would say to me on a daily basis. Thanks for shining the light John!

Well Anna Jane’s second paragraph really said it all! :) There are some people who seem to do most of the tweeting – I don’t care what time I get into Twitter, there they are. I now look mostly at @replies or DMs from folks I “know” from the web and ignore the rest.

To ponder: If someone offers to help you get 10,000 followers on Twitter and no one hears them, were they still being an annoying ass?

I actually have a post coming out on Monday about the survey (yes, I write many posts way ahead of time) where I say I don’t believe this poll is legit based on what I see. I think most of us will say we see more spam than babble; at least I do.

But I ain’t saying anything more until Monday.

@Mike business relationships? What is this crap you speak of. On the true note, I am right there with you.

@Greg Ellison ummm don’t you control that?

@The Constant Complainer yeah it would only be just as nie if Yellow Book would have taken care of their crappy employee the same way that ComCast was at least willing to resolve that customers issue.

@Japh yeah makes three of us

@Compute Live it is as useful or useless as one makes it

@Klaus glad I could get you moving on Twitter a little bit with some back and forth, Tweet at me anytime.

@Anna Jane Very well said, all though I do think people tweeting about business and blog posts should plan on tweeting a few other things if they plan on keeping people following.

@Doug Dillard you know Doug it’s one of those things that might not be right for everyone, however having 80 followers that follow because of your blog and than tweeting a few things and slapping in a link to your latest post will quickly hit an audience that is hand made for you based on your site. It might not be the biggest list or the deepest list but if it gets exposure to what your looking to do than it’s a home run.

@Mark Smith Twitter is used by millions of people for various reasons, out of those millions half are probably crap. Point being I don’t care about the crap tweets or people, I care about the people I interact and network with.

@Christie as long as no one is seeing those tweets than I guess it wouldn’t matter :)

@Mitch you know honestly I pick and choose who I follow very carefully now, I learned my lesson and I see just about zero spam which makes me appreciate Twitter much more.

I actually don’t really see many useless tweets. Almost all of the people I follow actually post things that are worth posting, and the majority of them post useful resources or other things that I am interested in. Occasionally I see a useful tweet here and there, but it doesn’t bother me. If I see someone that doesn’t tweet things that are of use to me, useless banter, then I don’t follow them. It’s as simple as that. But I do actually hate twitter, because it is just another addictive and time consuming internet service that has taken another piece of my useless life from me, that I will never get back. And there’s nothing I can do about it, except of course tweeting 25+ Ways to Get a Life.

Oh god, I just googled that to see if it has been posted. it has, on oprah.com http://bit.ly/1awu9H not saying to go there though. K bye

It sounds like Twitter has become the lazy man’s (or women’s) Blog! Tell us about your specials in 140 characters or less! Seems to me that a well written blog like ExtremeJohn’s for example could do so much for your business than just tweeting. I can see where Twitter would be good for a business like Johns where he can use his Tweets as reminders or last minute offers. I wish I had had Twitter when I was in the hotel business, it could have helped fill some holes left by last minute group cancellations, I would have created a blog for the hotel, then tweeted regularly to all my corporate customers, slick!
