Twitter Unfollow Tools

by Extreme John on July 17, 2009 |

I am actually going to try and keep this post shorter than my usual articles about Twitter, they typically go on and on and on, and.. on some more.

When it comes to Twitter Tools any of you that have been reading Extreme John.com for a while now know that I had a pretty good addiction to the Twitter tools, Twitter desktop managers, and various Twitter tools to increase your Twitter followers fast.

Lately I haven’t been as in tune with the new twitter tools that are hitting the interwebs everyday, that was until today when for some reason I noticed that even though I have Twitter user @justlocalsex blocked my twitter time line keeps getting flooded with their tweets, this promopted me to search for Twitter unfollow tools to see if I can delete the user from there.

Twitter Unfollow Tools

I really try to keep the people I follow on Twitter in niches that fit either my business ventures or the good people I network with likke yourself that are nice enough to follow me on Twitter, not really sure I have anything to say thats worthy of a follow but hey that’s what Twitter is for.

Anyway back to my little search for some kind of tool to unfollow people on Twitter, I instantly looked through my Twitter bookmarks figuring that I had to have some kind of unfollow tool in there, here’s the one’s that I was able to locate.

Twitter Karma

Good tool for comparing who is and is not following you and getting rid of people in bulk, only downside is that if you have a large list of Twitter followers the data fetching process can take forever.

Flash Tweet

Flash Tweet gives ou the option to bulk follow or bulk unfollow Twitter users, this however was another fail for me as I continued to get a server error after submiting my data.

Untwollow

This tool wasn’t what really what I am looking for it will just randomly bulk unfollow Twitter users, hardly good if you actually interact with your Twitter network like I do.

Tweepler

Tweepler looks like a really nice Twitter tool that allows you to manage and organize your Twitter followers and the people you follow on Twitter, this plugin does not seem to be working for me either due to the fact that it’s been trying to load my list of followers for about 15 minutes.

As you can see by this point I still haven’t found anything that will bulk unfollow Twitter users by selection, now I decided to turn to Google and do a few searches for “twitter unfollow tool“, figured that should be easy enough to find.

Mutuality

The first search that came up was for Dragon Blogger who featured an article titled “Bulk Unfollow In Twitter With Mutuality“, after checking out the article I headed over to Mutuality with hopes that it was exactly what I wanted, it wasn’t it only had three options to choose from and wasn’t user specific.

In Rev Twit In

Still running dry I checked out this article title “6 Bulk Follow/Unfollow Tools for Twitter” over at Rotor Blog and thought for sure that I found exactly what I was looking for with InRevTwitIn, nope not happening this is a good tool to flush out people that don’t follow you back.

By this point in my journey to get rid of that particular Twitter follower I mentioned in the beginning of the article landed me right back where I started, removing users with Twitter as opposed to using any Twitter tool.

You would assume that’s where the story ends, sadly thats not the case. I neded up leaving Twitter Karma running in the background while I wrote this article and it finally returned my followers and the people I followed, bad news… @justlocalsex was not listed there, now how do I get it to stop or actually have the block I put on the account work. Good times.

Sorry John… no solution here as I am just getting ready to (probably next week) start actually using my Twitter account. So far I only follow you, and of the 5 followers I have, you are the only one I know.

This week I have been trying to read as many posts as I can on the subject so I can start off on the right track and this post has a lot of great info. Thanks! Looking forward to reading the other comments for other solutions as well.

Yes, same here. I stopped mass-following a month ago upon realizing it didn’t do any good to my twitter stats and campaigns. So far, I’m having a hard time to mass-unfollowing profiles who are not even bloggers to begin with. It’s almost impossible, so I guess right now I’m just restarting by only trying to follow those people I’m really interested with. :)

I really like the mutuality tool. It is a no frills, easy to use resource. I have just been unfollowing people manually though. I have also been extra cautious in regards to the people I follow now.

@John,

You know if I used half your advice I would be a better blogger. I’m guessing you’re getting “spam” because you’re randomly following anyone?

I started having that issues as well. What I do is unfollow them. I think there’s an option to also ban them or block them.

John install the mod I have at blogengage! The twitter counter widget! I would be posting that I’m @ your site right now! http://twittercounter.com/bbrian017

@Doug,

I’ll make sure I’m following you! I would 100% suggest getting twitter! I was negative at first but ti’s blown me up! I’ll follow your url out when I leave.

@Liane I’m stuck at 2001 and I cannot follow anymore people! It’s pretty lame! I only have 1200 followers :( I can’t even follow all my members it’s sad and some might be offended!

Hi John- there’s also friendorfollow.com which shows you who is following or not in alphabetical order with their picture. It’s really cool. 8)
Other than that one if you only want to find out if an individual person is following you or someone else you can use doesfollow.com
I didn’t know of the tools you just posted – you have some great finds here. I’m going to stumble this.My current id on stumbleupon is creative heart ( just so you know it’s me  )
Have a great weekend!

@Liane YoungBlogger yeah the mass follow thing was fun for a minute and actually met some great people out of it, it’s just not worth the effort to me overall anymore.

@Tycoon Blogger yeah for the most part I just use Twitter to manually unfollow people as well, this was a special need because this isn’t someone I am following.

@bbrian017 yeah it’s odd for some reason I do have them blocked and it still let’s it through. I had the Twitter counter widget and decided to pull it out of there, maybe I will put it up again soon.

@Eren Mckay See this is exactly why I love having a blog, people helping people. I have already been to and used Friend or Follow and completely forgot about that Twitter tool. I need to bookmark that bad boy right now, thank you Erin!

@TheGooRoo I feel ya, so many Twitter tools and Twitter resources that I can’t keep up.

Thanks for sharing these twitter tools John. But I think you’ve missed out one which is TweetLater. I’m using it too as it follows people who follows you, and it unfollows people who unfollows you too. It’s quite interesting and it’s free to use.

Lee

@Lee Tweet Later is an excellent tool, I have written about that tool before as well. However I was looking for a specific user to unfollow or try to block, which I didn’t even consider Tweet Later to be able to do.

Like you I was unhappy with the available unfollow tools – so I had one written:

The concept is simple, if a person has sent you an @ message – or you have @ them then they are added to a white list, then 100 of those that are not on the list are unfollowed.. simples

This ‘product’ was developed for my own use and is functional but not very pretty looking, but if you want to try it out (at your own risk)

Read the blog article: http://rapidbi.com/management/2009/08/new-twitter-unfollow-tool-people-that-dont-engage-with-you/

let me know what you think of the idea

Have you tried twitblock.com? It actually rates the spamminess of all your followers, and makes unfollowing easy.

I have used all the tools mentioned above and many more, and none of them give you as much functionality in unfollowing as http://www.tweepular.com

The best thing about tweepular is that you can unfollow users based on them not following you back within a certain amount of days.

The one problem I’ve found is that it doesn’t seem to work very well (at all) once you have over 20,000 followers….

Great article. I find SocialOomph (formerly Tweet Later) to be good for generally managing my account. I also use Friend or Follow, but find it a bit slow and clumsy with having to manually unfollow people.

I tried Twitter Karma from reading this article and that is exactly what I need at this point in time.

I also use Twitter Counter to find people to follow, as well as the list that I set up with Social Oomph, that does the searching for me based on my criteria.

I follow back too, if you follow: http://twitter.com/rebeccahabel

It appears to be no longer possible to bulk unfollow at Twitter Karma.
So this site is of no use to me now anymore.

I made the mistake of following too many people when starting out. Unfollowing them is my punishment for following them in the first place. I learned my lesson for sure.
