Twittley Whats the Deal

Buffer Pin It Twittley Wordpress Plugin

Twittley WordPress Plugin makes it easy for visitors to retweet your posts on the social network Twitter. In addition to making things a little easier for your visitors to retweet your posts Twittley also allows bloggers to submit blog articles for free to be listed in their article directory, this of course exposes the bloggers content to more viewers.

I have been using the Twittley WordPress plugin here on the Extreme John blog for a while now and I know that a lot of bloggers that come through here on a daily basis have also installed the plugin on their personal or business blogs based on my reviews and posts about Twittley. Most of you know that I like to call things as I see them without worrying so much about what everyone is going to think about it, it’s one of the main reasons that people choose to subscribe to my rss feed. This will serve as one of those times that I have an issue with something and it might seem as if I am going off the handle about it when in fact I am just looking to call attention to something and hopefully get an answer or get the issue resolved, because if this is happening to me chances are it’s happening to someone else.

When it comes to any of the article submission directories out there like Twittley, Blog Engage or Tweetmeme I have always recommended that bloggers take the time to submit their articles as soon as they are published, doing so ensures that your posts go in the right category and all of that good stuff. It also makes it easier for your visitors to vote up or click on the retweet button since they don’t have to take the extra time trying to figure out which category or description to use, they can just click and be done.

Just a little while ago I submitted my “630lbs of Food Donated by Extreme Tan and Smoothies” post to the Twittley directory, after submitting my post to any directory I always take the time to click through on the title to make sure it follows back to my post and doesn’t trap the traffic in their system. I like the free listing and free traffic, but it doesn’t mean I am willing to share my search terms with you and let you keep all of the traffic to yourself.

After completing my submission on Twittley for the post above I clicked on the title (circled in red), once I click the article or post title it should take me to the actual post that was submitted to Twittley in the first place, which means it should have taken me back to my blog and that specific post. Instead of Twittley sending me off to the correct article that was submitted it sent me off to some Mounted Wall Fountains blog, clearly a post and blog that had nothing to do with the article I submitted to them or clicked on.

I guess it’s safe to say that it’s a good idea to click on your articles after you submit them to any directory or blog network, because you never know where traffic that should be going to you might actually be going. Now before everyone starts getting all fired up and wants to say that I am just trying to toast Twittley on this, let me assure you that I have had this very same issue happen at least three times in the past and alerted Twittley to the issue on Twitter. I still have never heard back from Twittley on Twitter till this day about any of my previous tweets to them about this issue in the past, no sense on wasting my time tweeting the message there again.

I’m not going to go as far as to say that Twittley is stealing traffic or purposely redirecting random links in their directory to sites that have nothing to do with the actual content type, but I will say that TRAFFIC LEAKS SUCK. I have been pretty patient with Twittley in the past and appreciate them interacting with me here on my blog to address issues and questions in the past, hopefully hey can take the time to resolve this issue and respond here so that we know the problem is solved.

At this point I will hang tight for a response from Twittley and while I do that I will be taking a look at my Google Analytics to see how much traffic has come in from Twittley over the last 6 months, in the event I don’t have a response from Twittley you can expect that I will be pulling the button as I avoid traffic leaks at all levels.

If you have had a similar issue with Twittley take a second to leave a comment and share your experience with the Twittley button, do you click your submitted articles after you receive the submission confirmation?

John-as you know, I also use twittley, I have not come across that problem but I never usually check either. I will be froM now on though. My gripe about twittley lately is that the traffic volume has been way down. I am hoping they will promote it more going forward. It is a good site with a great concept, I just hope they do not fade away.

@Tycoon blogger @promote your blog, I am starting to wonder the same myself. They finally nailed it with the button, but things don’t seem to be the same and this issue here is a concerning one.

I had planned on writing a post about Twittley switching to Do Follow or trying to get them to switch to Do Follow, then this came up again and moved me in a different direction.

I tried to retweet that post this morning, and there was an issue with Twittley that wouldn’t let me do it, finally after getting frustrated I gave up. I almost left another comment, but was reminded of the good deed you were doing and what that article was about and decided to let it go and come back and try later.

Guess I will stick to my Tweetmeme button 8-O .-= Keith´s last blog ..Do you Use Disqus Or Other Comment Sign In App? =-.

Hey John,
I regularly read your blog now after finding it on Twittley. We are aware of the bug and have been working on fixing the issue. The bug has to do with the cloaked tracking link that is generated. As more and more submissions are made it seems we never added something that checks to see if that particular cloaked link url already exist. That is our fault, but will be addressed soon.
I don’t know why your traffic is slumping from Twittley, our traffic continues to grow at the site.
Also, how were you trying to contact us? The best way to contact us is through our email address contact@twittley.com. If you ever have any problems or concerns I’d hope you’d let us know so we could have a chance to address the issue first, before discouraging people from using Twittley, a site which we have worked countless hours on.
Please hang in there while we fix this. We have many new great features coming to Twittley in the coming months that will make getting retweets even easier and we will be removing the “nofollow” tag for links on the individual pages. This will help websites get more link juice.
Thanks,
Joey

Always awesome when someone from the company gets back to you ASAP. I think more companies should follow that lead

Now on a side note, anyone else having an issue with the Tweetmeme button showing up as the image on Facebook instead of the normal image from the actual post?

You work hard for your traffic and have every right to be pissed if another website is redirecting that traffic to another blog. Hopefully the Twittley issue is resolved soon.

It is a great review about Twittley , although i had used it but i couldn’t get as much as traffic :( as i got from Tweetmeme :) :)
Anyways,
There is a slight spell mistake in the post
7th paragraph->5th line->6th word ,Instead of writing ‘they’ you have written ‘hey’ , so please correct it :) :)
I hope you won’t feel bad because i was just reading it so i found it , sorry if you have felt bad ;)

Hey there John, very strange problems with the Twittley button, I’ve been using on my blog for quite a while now and never had that problem, the only thing I have is when the Twittley button times out!

@Karen @ BlazingMinds, do you click your articles after you submit them to see if they follow through to your site? That’s the only way you would notice this particular issue.

Okay everyone, the issue is now fixed. I’d like to explain what happened in detail.

When making a submission a random Twittley URL is made. We use this URL for click tracking. The old URLs were only 3 characters long. The link can contain a-z and 0-9. So a total of 36 characters possible for each of the 3 total characters. So 36x36x36=46,656 possible random links.

Twittley has really grown up a lot since its inception. We have thousands and thousands of submission now. We are approaching that number and when we created Twittley did not even think of passing that number. So repeats of the random number started to occur, it was a matter of probability.

Now to fix the issue. We have made the link 12 characters long now. So…
36x36x36x36x36x36x36x36x36x36x36x36=4.738^18th power. So the odds of this ever happening again are somewhere in the range of 1 in 360 billion or so. In other words, never.

If any of your past links have problems please just email us at contact@twittley.com and we will correct the problem. Extreme John, the page that had the error has since been corrected so there is no longer a leak.

Thanks for hanging in there everyone. Sorry for the error!
