Wow, what an amazing problem. I’m a big fan of Twittley, and it shocks me that this ever came up. Kudos to Joey for fixing it. I’m going to check all of my Twittley links now!

Okay everyone, the issue is now fixed. I’d like to explain what happened in detail.

When making a submission a random Twittley URL is made. We use this URL for click tracking. The old URLs were only 3 characters long. The link can contain a-z and 0-9. So a total of 36 characters possible for each of the 3 total characters. So 36x36x36=46,656 possible random links.

Twittley has really grown up a lot since its inception. We have thousands and thousands of submission now. We are approaching that number and when we created Twittley did not even think of passing that number. So repeats of the random number started to occur, it was a matter of probability.

Now to fix the issue. We have made the link 12 characters long now. So…
36x36x36x36x36x36x36x36x36x36x36x36=4.738^18th power. So the odds of this ever happening again are somewhere in the range of 1 in 360 billion or so. In other words, never.

If any of your past links have problems please just email us at contact@twittley.com and we will correct the problem. Extreme John, the page that had the error has since been corrected so there is no longer a leak.
