BJ Penn vs Kenny Florian UFC 101 Review – UFC 101 Live Results
There is no secret here, BJ Penn is still a bad ass and even with Kenny Florian pressing him against the cage for three rounds trying to tire Penn out, the strategy just didn’t work. Penn stuffed takedown attempt after takedown attempt, all though it never really looked like Florian was trying to really get him down. My hats off to BJ Penn and everyone that said he would take Florian, he did just that when he took Florian to the ground and choked him out.
Anderson Silva vs Forrest Griffin UFC 101 Review – UFC 101 Live Results
Besides having an open jaw to stuff my foot into and besides watching one of the craziest knockouts I have ever seen, I guess it’s safe to say that Anderson Silva really is the guy I didn’t believe he was, Forrest played into his hand by chasing him and caught it. I am completely shocked how easy Silva made this look and honestly don’t see anyone beating him any time soon.
Josh Neer vs Kurt Pellegrino – UFC 101 Live Results
One of the more boring hug and hump matches, Josh Neer never got off the ground… literally, Kurt Pellegrino with the win in a sleeper.
UFC 101 offered up a ton of fight content with a total of something like 6 fights that we were able to see on the live pay per view event, it’s actually amazing to me that I was able to pick just about every single fight wrong. Ok let me rephrase that, I did pick every single fight wrong.
Hopefully I will get my crap together for UFC 102 and stop being such an underdog lover, it got me killed Forrest Griffin style last night. Jesus, jaw still dropped. Why Forrest why?
Leave a comment and let me know what your review of UFC 101 would be, did you like the UFC 101 fight card and the way the show was put on? omg I am SO bummed i missed this fight!
I’m so bummed that every fight crushed my heart and soul.
I am still in shock at the Anderson,Griffin fight. Forrest is not a dumb fighter nor does he have lack of skill but Anderson made it look like it was effort less to knock him out. He just toyed with him and could have finished Forrest much faster then he did..Anderson sent a very clear message that he is the baddest man on the planet. Fedor who? FYI Anderson said at the post fight press conference that Loyota vs Sliva will never happen. He has a problem fighting his freind. Thats really suck because talk about fight of the century.

@James man I am still blown away, but you do bring up a pretty funny point. Fedor huh? Fedor what? Screw Fedor it’s very clear now that the UFC has THEE BEST fighters, some of which seem as if they may never be ready to let go of that title.
Who will beat Brock Lesnar?
Who will beat Lyoto Machida?
Who will beat Anderson Silva?
Who will beat GSP?
Let’s not forget BJ Penn, who’s gonna beat him now?
Your looking at some very tough guys to remove from that spot at the current moment.
Interesting post John. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news on your picks. In regards to your last comment, that is a very good question and it actually brings me to the post conference of Anderson Silva when he stated if “UFC were to put their best title holders against the best title holders in other MMA companies, other companies would stand no chance”. Now this is no rocket science or anything, but Anderson might have just perceived MMA in a bigger picture. Perhaps this sport will mainstream into cross-fighting events where UFC, WEC, Strikeforce, Affliction, M-1, etc might try to cross-promote fights against each other. That would be an interesting idea, not sure if it will happen, but Anderson might just have implemented a great idea into the owners of all these MMA companies.
Perhaps if this were to happen, we would than be able to show Fedor fans that he has a lot to earn in the MMA world.
In regards to fighters for BJ Penn, I am still waiting for WEC to move some of their 145 pound fighters to test Penn. Perhaps mike brown, Urijah Faber or even Jose Aldo who in my eyes would give anyone a challenge in any MMA company for the 155 pound class. I think he is the future of welterweights and if he were to put 10 pounds on, he would give the 155 pound class of UFC a run for their money.
Just heard the news from James that Forrest had a “Broken or dislocated jaw and had loss of hearing in one ear”.
Crazy
I don’t know man GSP is the bomb! And I was mad shocked at the way Griffin got a whoppin .
Anyways I was pretty happy with the BJ Penn fight.

I was lookin for Griffin to pull off an upset. Instead I was upset. He got his kick caught early in the fight, which I guess scared him from throwing those lethal ones hes thrown in the past. Then he played right into the taunts of Anderson Silva. He couldn’t control himself, which got him embarassed.
Good job to Penn. I’ve always been a fan of both Penn and Florian, but I was going to Florian just cause I love an underdog.
Got pretty mad about the Amir fight. I’ve waited a good while wanting to see him fight. Hendricks did a good job, but I think it was definitely a premature stoppage.
Silva/Griffin was definitely an eye-opening fight.. Although – without taking anything away from Silva as an amazing fighter – it did cause me to question the quality of competition in the UFC.. Forrest didn’t deserve to be in the cage with Anderson Silva, he was slow, clumsy and almost an embarrassment to the sport..
I was picking him to perhaps pull an upset, I admit, but the man was horrbily outclassed

What-up brother ? John, just as I said on the MMA Punk blog Silva is a force to be reckoned with, big time , but… The “show-boat-en” crap has to stop ! MMA didn’t make it where it is today by acting “unprofessional” in or out of the cage !!! Made me sick to my stomach too ! Undeniable skill is possessed by Silva and Lesnar but don’t bring that WWF mentality to the most respected fighting in sports today ! It’s gonna turn into a circus if someone doesn’t come along FAST and kick both their asses . The problem being , WHO !! I’m not comparing skill levels of Silva & Lesnar , it’s the “show-boat-en ,just to clarify ! Peace brother and can’t wait til next time ! ! !
@ShaunJudy no doubt GSP is for real, he has an injury now so he will be doing some recovery for the moment anyway. As for Forrest… frown
@J.C it seems like your in the same boat as me on most of the fights, the Amir fight was really no biggie to me I need to see him fight more and interview less before I jump on the Amir train. However the stoppage was rough for sure.
@Hard Rocking South African I can’t say that I think the Forrest fight has any bearing on my thoughts about the talent in the UFC, it’s the UFC period.
The best talent BY FAR AND BAR NONE is in the UFC, it’s almost to a point with the other horse and pony shows that even considering the other fight leagues a threat is ridiculous.
@Thom I agree the show boatin crap is a little much, but you need a villian in everything and MMA is no different. I just long for the day that Silva does that and has his head kicked in.

Griffin/Silva was one of the most unique fights I’ve ever seen. It wasn’t a “good” fight, but it was memorable. I’ve never seen anyone embarrassed in a fight like that, especially in the pros. The punch that took him down and ended the fight didn’t even knock him out, but he’d had enough. If there isn’t already a textbook for “getting inside your opponent’s head,” Anderson Silva should write one. I love watching Griffin fight, and I hope he recovers from this.
@Thom Interesting conversation here. I agree that UFC has gone too much in the direction of pro-wrestling for my liking. But, showboating in a fight has a long tradition in boxing & MMA, and is quite different than pro-wrestling behavior.
Silva’s “showboating” reminded me of Roy Jones Jr or Muhammed Ali. Hands down, barely moving to evade punches, and countering with devastating accuracy. It was so effective that Griffin couldn’t touch him.
To me showboating in the cage is just showing off skills in an unorthodox way. Different than Lesnar’s post-fight interview WWE antics. I don’t mind the showboating when the fighter has the skills, but I could do without the out-of-the-cage drama.
