UFC 106 results are in the books which means that it’s time for me to ramble on and post my UFC 106 review and fight recap for each of the main fight card events. Those of you that haven’t been to my blog before missed my UFC 106 Predictions, you can check out what my fight predictions were there.

UFC 106 Results and Review

Tito Ortiz vs Forrest Griffin

I picked Forrest Griffin to win this fight which is something I did before watching the Countdown to UFC 106, after watching the countdown I had some serious doubt about where Griffin’s head was at. Just my opinion, I’m not one to change my predictions all though if I were given the chance to I rpobably would have changed my pick to Tito.

Tito entered the ring with a pretty nasty black eye that was obviously tender and a pretty fresh wound, he winsed at one point while he was being lubed up before he entered the ring.

Tito dragged Forrest to the ground pretty early in round one and delivered some solid ground and pound, Forrest managed to work his way out of it and walk back up the cage to his feet. Forrest did a great job of controlling the striking game to close out the first round. I gave this round to Griffin due to leg strikes and his success on his feet, even with Tito getting the takedown and delivering some decent G&P.

The second round started out much like the first round with a very brief meeting in the center of the ring and Tito catching a leg kick and taking Forrest to the ground, he delivered some G&P than Griffin managed to get back to his feet. Shortly after both fighters returned to their feet Forrest managed to kick the mouth piece out of Tito’s mouth, by this point in the fight Forrest is doing a good job mixing up his strikes.

Tito controlled the final part of the second round until Forrest worked a butterfly guard and rolled Tito to take control and gain top position, Forrect didn’t deliver much damage from the top.

Through the first three minutes of the third round Tito didn’t manage to mount any offense and continued to be picked apart by kicks and punches, and even seem rocked around the 1:44 minute mark. Tito really never did much in this round, and I cant even remember if he even had a single takedown attempt in this round.

Forrest looked amazing in the third round and I couldn’t help but think that either Tito ran out of gas or injured something in the second round, because when I say he did nothing… I mean he did nothing in the third round.Forrest Griffin won the fight by split decision. I guess not changing my predictions turned out to be a good thing.

Josh Koscheck vs Anthony Johnson

The first round was pretty solid for both fighters, all though at one point timeout was called when Koscheck complained about either being poked in the eye or just flat out pretended to be kneed in the eye while he was down, the reason I said he might have pretended was because he was barely grazed on his right eye. Koz complained about his left eye.

The first round came to an end with Josh Koscheck on top of Anthony Johnson delivering strikes as well as taking Johnson’s back for the right up until the end of the round.

The second round started with Johnson complaining about being poked in the eye, Johnson didn’t take very long to recover and the second round was back underway. Koscheck was doing a good job of hitting Johnson with some big shots than managed to poke to poke Johnson in the eeye yet again, this was quickly becoming the eye poke match of the century. It sucked because while the fight was on the action was excellent.

At 3:20 0f the second round there was an excellent toe-to-toe exchange in the center of the ring, after the exchange Koscheck drove through a takedown and put Johnson on the ground for G&P. As the round continued Josh continued the brutal ground and pound with vicious elbows and strikes from the top, opening up a cut on Johnson.

Koscheck ended up taking Johnson’s back with about 13 seconds left in the round and sunk in a nasty rear naked choke, Johnson tapped out from the choke. Winner by rear naked choke, Josh Koscheck. My prediction was Johnson. GRRR! Knew I should have gone with Kos.

Phil Baroni vs Amir Sadollah

First fight on tonight’s card UFC 106 main fight card.

Phil Baroni cmes out fast with some nasty bombs and brutal upper cuts against the cage, Amir did a great job weathering the initial storm brought on by Baroni. In typical Phil Baroni fashion he tired quickly after the first minute and Sadollah did a good job pressing Baroni against the fence.

Baroni took down Sadollah down around the 3 minute mark and did a fair amount of G&P, but nothing out of control or that Amir Sadollah couldn’t handle. Baroni let Sadollah up after Amir tried setting up Baroni for an arm bar attempt, and payed the price getting caught in a brutal Muai Tai clinch.

After the first round ended Baroni’s face was battered and bloody and he was clearly exhausted after his early flurries. Sadollah entered the second round with a ton of momentum, Phil on the other hand looked like a beaten fighter. All though Baroni landed some nice clean shot in the second round Amir did a good job of continuing to pick Baroni apart.

Coming out for the third round it was clear that Baroni needed to take Sadollah out if he any chance of winning the fight, his corner also reinforced this as well. Amir went on to dominate Baronin in the third round and looked excellent doing so, you have to give both fighters a shit load of respect they had a war. As one sided as it might have been. My prediction was Baroni, he’s from my home town I couldn’t pick against him.

Antonio Nogueira vs Luiz Cane

Second fight on the main UFC 106 fight card.

Luiz Cane started the round stalking Little Nog, however it didn’t last very long as Nogueira connected with a brutal left hook that rocked Cane. Cane tried back peddling to recover from being hurt, Little Nog pressed the action and ended the fight at 1:56 of the first round by TKO. My UFC 106 prediction was Little Nog (or as I screwed up and put Nog in a drunken fit).

Jacob Volkmann vs Paulo Thiago

Paul Thiago pretty much handled things in the first round, Thiago ended the first right by knocking Volkmann down with a nasty punch.

Volkmann did a better job of keeping Paulo Thiago under control during the early part of this round and even looked like he might have Thiago in trouble for a short period on the ground, Thiago ended up closing out the round with a nasty shot from the top and ended the round with top control.

Jacob Volkmann got dropped quick in the third round, Thiago continued to pound the mid section and throw nasty shots from the top. Volkmann did a good job of reversing position and gaining top control for a short period of time, Thiago was able to escape and get the fight back on the feet.

With 2:00 remaining in the fight Volkmann gained top control and put Thiago in a crucifix and dropped some nasty elbows, somehow Thiago managed to survive. At one point it looked like Volkmann had a darce choke from the bottom, he managed to lose that position as well. The fight went the distance and ended with Thiago dropping elbows and strikes from side control. Paulo Thiago wins by unanimous decision.

UFC 106 Recap Closing Thoughts

I really have to take my hat off (not wearing one) to the UFC and all of the UFC fighters that were on tonight’s preliminary card and main fight card for UFC 106. The entire night of fights were excellent, from the free preliminary card on Spike TV right down to the pay per view.

If you had a chance to watch UFC 106 take a moment to leave a comment and share your thoughts on how the fight card stacked up.

Don’t forget to check out my UFC 107 Predictions Diego Sanchez vs BJ Penn and Frank Mir vs Chieck Kongo should turn out to be an entertaining night of fights, I have the rest of the main fight card predictions for UFC 107 there as well. Besides the replaying of the prelims and Tito bitching at the end, making excuses it was a great night of fights.

@Mike from Daily Shot Of Coffee, that’s Tito he’s famous for that, but it was clear he had a pretty decent swallow eye before he started the fight. I give him props for standing in the 3rd while Forrest unloaded on him.

Disappointed in Tito. I thought he would come back and dominate on the ground. Staying on their feet was a bad position for Tito.

@Steve, I really can’t understand why Tito didn’t try more takedowns in the third, when he took Forrest down and for the time he held him there he delivered some solid G&P.

Just didn’t have what it took to get the job done.

@Steve, he clearly had some ring rust and was a little gassed in the third round. It just goes to show that traing and fighting are so different as Tito trains as well as anyone.

What a night! KOs and TKOs a-plenty, a few submissions, and the few fights that did go to a decision were still exciting. Congrats on a great show, UFC.

I was glad to see Forrest pull it out. I’m starting to wonder if he does the whole self-doubting-in-public thing on purpose to psyche out his opponents and let them think he’s weak. That’s a very Sun Tzu tactic.

Koscheck/Johnson the fight was pretty good overall, but Koscheck and Johnson the fighters didn’t impress. Kneeing a downed opponent shows an amateurish lack of control, but selling an eye injury that didn’t happen and then repeatedly going to your opponent’s eyes is even worse. Poor form.

Little Nog was awesome! Up until last night I thought it was the other Nog fighting. I was like “why aren’t they advertising Nog?” Gimme a break, even their names are identical except for two letters in the middle name.

@Sean @stair lifts, haha yeah people love to find that small stuff to get all hell bent about, it was a mistake that anyone could have made.

Yeah that silly shit between Kos and Johnson almost sucked the life out of e, I’m just happy the fight ended in an exciting way and you really have to say Koscheck has some serious skills. I personally would love to see him fight Dan Hardy, I think he could handle Hardy and I honestly believe he deserves a shot at GSP more than Hardy does. Who hasn’t Koscheck fought?

Another great review John.

I also predicted Johnson to win but changed my mind at the weigh-ins. I’m sure I saw his mouth something like “I really struggled to make the cut”. That fight really had me wincing though. I can’t see why the fighters cant close their fists while throwing punches!

Lil Nog done great and I’m happy he proved me wrong in my prediction. Volkmann done very well against a tough opponent too even though he lost. I really though he had him when in that crucifix.

From another fellow blogger and MMA fan, keep up the great work.

@WarriorsOfMMA, I can see an accidental eye poke once in a blue moon, but between faking them and having a few of them in one match it was more than enough for my eyes.

Lil Nog had an excellent outting last night, it was nice to see him put an exciting win in his UFC book.

I am happy the Tito Ortiz return the UFC after long vacation. At least now he will give respect to the talent of his opponent.

As a true MMA fan–I feel there are no bad UFC bouts, some are just better than others. Even though neither co-main event was a championship bout, I still spent $44.95 to watch these men fight. I loved Koz calling out Hardy and hope that fight comes off, as I felt Hardy was getting a shot too early at GSP. Koz / Hardy winner deserves a shot, but I still think GSP is too strong for either guy.

Forrest fought a good fight, but I really don’t ever see him with another title shot. Tito obviously had some ring rust and looked extremly gassed in the third round, but I still see some life in there and he might be a contender again one day.

Finally, that was my first time seeing Jacob Volkman and I was impressed by the little guy and I think he has some real skills.

I am looking forward to UFC 107 and and I am calling Penn and Mir victories right now.

Gotta admit, it was a great night of fights, I was only really looking forward to the Nog/Cane fight, but most of the night impressed me.. Was a little disappointed (don’t know exactly why) with griffen/Ortiz.. but it wasn’t a bad fight

I’m kinda disappointed with Koscheck and Johnson fight. I think without poking Johnson twice, Kos won’t have the momentum leading to the choke.

Don’t get me wrong but I like Kos to win but the way things going early it looks like Kos will get beaten. Also he was an actor for a moment there.

Tito also gassed out the last round and I don’t think its exciting to watch the 3rd fight anymore.

@ZXT, you might be right in regards to Kos vs Johnson, either way I wanted Kos to win and he got the W so I was happy. All though I could have done without the acting thats for damn sure.

Tito is like a broken record already. Before the fight, he is 100 percent in shape, etc…after the fight, he was injured, etc. But I’m still giving him one more chance to redeem himself or else he should retire for good like when Ken Shamrock was losing to Tito.
