UFC 109 Fight Card and Predictions

UFC 109 Card

It’s time to get down to the UFC 109 Fight Card that features a main event between two prehistoric… wait sorry, HISTORIC UFC fighters. Randy Couture will be taking on UFC old timer Mark “The Hammer” Coleman in a non title bout on February 6, 2010 in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay. I know I have said it a million times before in my previous UFC predictions and I will say it again, I hate when the main events are non title fights. I can’t really give a good reason as to why, I just know that I prefer main events to be title fights.

Now before I get in to the UFC 109 fight card and my UFC 109 predictions I always like to point out the fact that even though I post UFC betting lines and I have the UFC 109 odds posted below, my UFC predictions are never based on the betting lines or odds. I wouldn’t recommend using any of my predictions if you plan on placing bets on UFC 109, I typically pick the fighters that I want to see over the fighters that I actually believe will win. Hardly the most sophisticated way of making UFC predictions, but it works for me and has for a pretty long time.

UFC 109 Fight Card

Randy Couture (17-10) vs Mark Coleman (16-9)

Nate Marquardt (32-8-2) vs Chael Sonnen (25-10-1)

Mike Swick (14-3) vs Paulo Thiago (12-1)

Demian Maia (11-1) vs Dan Miller (11-2-0-1)

Matt Serra (16-6) vs Frank Trigg (19-7)

UFC 109 Fight Card and Predictions

Randy Couture vs Mark Coleman

After the walkers make it down the runway to the ring we should be treated to a pretty sweet 30 second rush from Mark Coleman before he runs out of gas, Coleman will never quit but his gas tank has always been non existent. Randy is an intelligent fighter that usually executes his game plan regardless of how boring it might be (Brandon Vera fight), I really don’t see Coleman finding a way to stop Randy Couture unless he manages to catch Randy with something within that first 30 second barrage.

My UFC 109 prediction: Randy Couture

Nate Marquardt vs Chael Sonnen

This will be one of those perfect examples of how I pick the fighter that I want to see win the fight, for some reason Sonnen just isn’t my type of fighter. I like how Nate Marquardt fights and to be honest I have seen more of his fights then I have Chael Sonnen’s fights.

My UFC 109 prediction: Nate Marquardt

Mike Swick vs Paulo Thiago

Long story short… When Mike Swick faced Joe Riggs our chain of indoor tanning salons Extreme Tan and Smoothies sponsored Mike Swick with a logo that went across the back of Swicks shorts. In addition to that I have personally spoken with Mike on the phone and he’s even done an interview for us on MMA Punk.com, it doesn’t matter who Mike Swick is fighting I will be picking him.

My UFC 109 prediction: Mike Swick

Damian Maia vs Dan Miller

This should be a pretty sweet fight, I don’t see this fight going Miller’s way though. Short and sweet.

My UFC 109 prediction: Damian Maia

Matt Serra vs Frank Trigg

This is hardly the biggest draw of the night on the UFC 109 fight card but it should turn out to be a pretty entertaining fight, I don’t see Frank Trigg being able to handle Serra on the ground which is exactly where I think Matt Serra will be taking this fight. Serra can get a little emotional during fights and can get pulled into a brawl pretty quick, he doesn’t want to brawl with Trigg.

My UFC 109 prediction: Matt Serra

It really seems like I always get disappointed by these sorts of match ups, as the “prehistoric” fighters never live up to the reputation they have in my head. It goes to show you how stamina and age really play in these kinds of fights…

@Steve@Lift Chairs, I don’t know man one thing I will say is that some of the old schoolers go out there and show exactly why they are still competing… It’s all heart and passion, I respect that. I don’t care for the leaning matches like Couture Vera, but Nog vs Couture was an awesome fight. This fight should be pretty entertaining.

@Extreme John, I am like a lot of you, I’m wondering why these guys are still competing, but their window is so short I get it. Other professions last longer, and I know I’d have a tough time walking away from anything I loved and could never do it again.

@T Vitiello, very good point. I honestly don’t think you should ever stop doing something that you truly love to do. These guys love to compete in the greatest sport on earth and at the highest level, how can anyone say anything bad about that ya know.

Love the picks John. Something is pulling me towards Thiago but as of now I’m still with Swick! Hes got to keep it standing though.

@Geoff “loco” motive Byers, Thiago is no joke I can understand why you would think he might win. Swick is going to need to get busy, not that same shit he pulled against Hardy.

Good month to be a fight fan, we get Strikeforce Jan 30 and UFC 109 on Feb 6 and UFC 110 on Feb 20. I can’t wait very excited. Good picks John I picked Trigg because he has more to lose the Serra. This will be another great fight card and UFC 110 is going to be insane. Very happy fight fans right now.

@MMApunk, good point Trigg does have a lot more to lose.

@MMApunk, This may be one of the bigger years MMA has. I can’t put my finger on it, but I have a feeling there is going to be a megafight by years end.

I honestly never care who wins. The only one I would kind of like to see win is Couture because I like watching him fight. Other than that I just like good fights. I’m hoping to see a knockout from a flying knee to the head. Then I’ll be happy.

@Anthony @ Jumpness, ahhh you like that flying knee to the head stuff huh? Haha it’s funny how MMA fans have their favorite finishing moves.

Why is it that in the poster, Norguiera and Vera are in it? I can’t find a schedule for their fight, that should be in a main card event.

@penthouse rio, Nogueira had to pull out of UFC 109 due to an ankle injury. They moved Vera to fight night 21 against Jon Jones. Nogueira was moved to UFC 110 and will fight Cain Velasquez.

Marquardt is at the top of his game, but what’s the reward another beating from Silva? Couture will win. The Trigg fight could be interesting, it will be see which version shows up.

@T Vitiello, I wouldn’t mind seeing Silva fight Nate again, I also wouldn’t mind seeing Nate take his title. Doesn’t mean that any of that is likely, but one can dream right.

TheCoach January 28, 2010 at 12:34 am

I am looking extremely forward to UFC 109 and what some of these fighters have to offer as many of them are fighting for their UFC careers…

Melvin Guillard is a very hard hitting Lightweight who once fought in the Welterweight class; something Torres knows and has already stated he plans to fight Guillard “on the ground”. Expect Guillard to try to keep it on his feet, constantly sprawling to avoid Torres’ takedown attempt. Also, Torres might be a little nervous making his debut in the Octagon against such a well-rounded lightweight.

Mike Swick does not lose two fights in a row and will be absolutely focused for this fight. Paulo Thiago (28) made his UFC debut in 2009 after fighting with Brazilian organizations Jungle Fights and Grand Prix Planaltina, winning ten straight fights in his home-land. In his debut in February 2009, he knocked out Josh Koscheck and earned “Knockout of the Night” (lucky shot) but momentum quickly shifted as Jon Fitch defeated him at UFC 100, giving Thiago his only loss. In his most recent fight, Thiago got a decision victory over Jacob Volkmann at UFC 106 but TheCoach was not overly impressed as Volkmann was a UFC rook. TheCoach will be convinced Thiago is a contender to fight GSP if he beats Swick… if not, he’s just another over-rated fighter with a stacked fight record from fighting Joe-Nobody and Johnny-Who in wanna-be organizations.

TheCoach feels that Marquardt has the upper-hand because if Sonnen wants to take it to the ground with his dominate wrestling skills, Marquardt will have many opportunities for submissions. If Sonnen wants to stand, Marquardt hits harder. Sonnen may be better at his style of martial arts but Marquardt is a better all around fighter and it will be evident come February 6th.

Feel free to check out TheCoach’s in depth predictions for UFC 109 – Relentless @ http://www.lionsdenu.com/ufc-109-relentless-preview-and-predictions/

Best of luck to everyone betting and all fighters on February 6th

Regards,
TheCoach

Yo, Extreme John, what’s up dude!!! Man, I haven’t been a good blogging friend lately. I promise to get on the stick and visit back more often.

I totally agree with you about main events. Considering both Coleman and Couture were around back in the early days of the UFC, I’m actually surprised that this fight hasn’t taken place sooner.

Coleman has no gas – I couldn’t agree more. He tanks out, then just tries to use wrestling moves to keep his opponent on the mat. I hope he doesn’t get a lucky punch in. My vote is Couture by decision in a boring fight.

I like Mike Swick. That’s awesome that you sponsored him.

Frank Trigg drives me nuts. He is nowhere near the fighter he used to be, and that’s not saying too much. He’s going to get choked out. Rear naked in first round, baby.

@The Constant Complainer, I like the confidence in how Trigg gets finished. I can tell you don’t like him, haha.

Thanks for coming through as always brother.

Worst card in a long time (betting wise). I found it really hard to find a good match to bet on. The best I could come up with was Frank Trigg beating Matt Serra giving you 2 times your money. Even if you think Serra will take it to the ground and win it, I still think Trigg got a fair chance.

Otherwise im very excited to see both Damian and Nate who should both win fairly easy. I hated the Damian vs Nate match when Damian got KOed in 3 seconds. It would have been more fun to see Nates takedown defence and stuff, but maybe another time. :high:

@Johan @ UFC Odds, I would have to agree. All though I haven’t bet on a card in a while, this one wouldn’t have me jumping to risk $ to win pennies. I’ll enjoy it for the entertainment value this time around.

Trigg does have a shot, curious to see where the fight goes and how long it stays there. I don’t see it going the distance that’s for sure.

Luke January 28, 2010 at 5:41 pm

Agreed with comment about “worst card in a long time.” Neither Coleman nor Couture are contenders, they’re novelties and having novelties slug it out as a main event hardly warrants the price of the pay-per-view. At least have Randy fight someone he should lose to; his slugfest against Big Nog was one of the most grueling fights we’ve seen in a long time.

There’s been a rash of weak UFC events lately. It’s really hard to care about this card at all. At least Nate is a contender, even if he didn’t look competitive in his last outing against The Spider. Perhaps Demian Maia will put on another exciting jiu-jitsu clinic for all the kids at home.

I don’t want to pay for this card but I probably will.

@Luke, I haven’t missed a card in forever. I can’t even remember what year it might have been, no chance I’m missing this one.

Thank you gor taking the time to comment, no doubt Nate is a contender that’s for damn sure.

I will have to say that Str. Forc. did have some big names…well celebrity’s or something, but come on folks, this UFC is easy to poke fun at if thats your intention but in reality hall of famers clash(1st time) Nate , Swicker and Maia all have something to prove to Mr.Silva of the UFC brass and both Serra and Trigg have the capabilities to make a very entertaing fight. Not that the s.f. fights were crappy but who didn’t feel a little  by the end.Sorry thats just me telling the truth.
