UFC 116 is less than two weeks away and I am already at a point where I can barely contain myself. It might come as a surprise to some of my new readers that I write about UFC or mixed martial arts, especially since I haven’t done any UFC predictions since UFC 111. There really wasn’t a chance that I could pass up on writing my predictions for UFC 116 with the main event that’s featured on the card, Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin. Carwin and Lesnar will be facing off to unify the Heavyweight Championship Title, something they were on a path to do before Lesnar fell ill.
In addition to watching the two bears throw meat hooks at each other in the main event there are a few other fights on the card that can easily be in the running for fight of the night, Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva vs Yoshihiro Akiyama is one of those fights. UFC 116 Lesnar vs Carwin takes place Saturday July 3, 2010 at the MGM Gran Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

UFC 116 Predictions
Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin
If you subscribe to my rss feed or connect with me via Twitter or my Facebook fan page you know that I can come unglued pretty quick when a UFC event is on the way, throw in a decent Heavyweight fight and that only builds the excitement. It usually means we get treated to a heavy handed quick finish between two punishing bomb throwers, this treat should be more exciting and interesting than any of the recent Heavyweight bouts we’ve seen.
Lesnar and Carwin are both freaks of nature and throw some serious leather, hell Shane Carwin has pretty much destroyed everyone he’s stepped into a cage with and that included easily crushing Frank Mir who managed to pull off a submission victory over Brock Lesnar in their first meeting. Lesnar went on to act like an Jackass after all but pulverizing Frank Mir’s face in their second matchup at UFC 100. Now the two monsters will finally have a chance to meet up to unify the Heavyweight Championship Title and I can’t wait, my prediction is Shane Carwin by KO. Leave a comment with your prediction for Lesnar vs Carwin.
Wanderlei Silva vs Yoshihiro Akiyama
Those of you that have been reading my blog or connect with @extremejohn on Twitter know that I tend to base my UFC predictions on who I would like to see win as opposed to who I think will actually win, this might b e one of those cases. There’s not a chance in hell that I’m skipping out on the chance to pick someone that goes by the name of “Axe Murderer”, not to mention Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva has been in the cage against some of the best fighters in the world. As if Silva’s laundry list of epic battles isn’t long enough I have no problem basing my prediction on the fact that Silva ALWAYS shows up to fight, Saturday July 3rd will be no different. My prediction, Wanderlei Silva.
Chris Lytle vs Matt Brown
This is a tough one for me to decide on based on a couple of factors, I like Chris Lytle and Matt Brown has grown into a well rounded fighter since he first appeared on The Ultimate Fighter. Regardless of the outcome Lytle and Brown will come with their guns loaded and ready to throw, add in a few sprinkles of submission attempts and you have a contender for Fight of the Night. My prediction Chris “Lights Out” Lytle.
Krzysztof Soszynski vs Stephan Bonnar
I get excited with fight cards like this UFC 116 fight card that we are going to be treated to, the fight card features “gamers”… all ready to throw down vs dry humping against the cage for three rounds. Bonnar might be coming off another loss in a UFC career that might very well be slipping away, but it’s still hard to dismiss a fighter that put on one of the best fights in UFC history. Bonnar needs to bring his A-game when he takes on Soszynski on the 3rd, if he doesn’t he might fight himself as the opening act before future UFC events. My prediction… Bonnar…
George Sotiropoulos vs Kurt Pellegrino
I will keep this prediction shorter than my previous UFC 116 predictions above for the sake of saving you some reading time, I’m sure by now you want to head off to a reputable MMA blog. Anyway, Sotiropoulos has the skills in my opinion to get this done. My prediction George Sotiropoulos.

Looks like we are pretty close on our picks Dave, with the exception of Brown.

Down goes Lesner, Down Goes Lesner!!! What a treat it’s gonna be to see him get Slaughtered!!!

Haha slaughtered huh Sang? He is quick as a cat for a massive guy bro.
What do you have to say now Sang

We all were stunned by that first round.
Brock may of gotten a little more time on the ground getting pounded because of what he means to UFC, but you have got to admit he won over some fans for sure last night with his heart and SKILLS.
Now he knows, don’t try and box. Take it to the ground then pound or just CHOKE the dude out. What a fight.

Although I would love to see Shane remain undefeated, I believe Brock being ill might play to his advantage. The fact that he lost so much weight from his illness will mean two things… one he will most likely gain LEAN body mass in his pursuits to gain back mass and secondly, he most likely will be a lot more agile than before due to this weight loss. From this, I believe we can all come to conclusion that he was fast before and mighty powerful, but now he will be faster and most likely just as powerful. That all plays out to a major ass whooping for Carwin if he gets to close. Bottom line, whoever lands some leather first will determine who wins this fight. Other than this fight, my predictions are Silva, Brown, Soszynki and Sotiropoulos. Should be an enticing night of fights… I Can’t wait either!

You bring up some great points, wonder what it’s going to be like for the stronger more agile guy to lose
Hey did you copy and paste “Sotiropoulos”? You know you did. haha
Yes Sir, I sure did… sometimes you get lazy and do not feel like typing, erasing, typing, erasing lol therefore copy and paste does all of that in one! Also, that is not your normal last name, so I do not want to do a hundred double takes to see if I spelled it correctly lol.

Yo, I am so happy see you back to doing some MMA prediction posts, bro. I love them and always enjoy reading the comments too.
I’m really looking forward to this fight card. I think Carwin will win by KO too. I read that Silva had to bail on this fight, but I don’t know if I saw who is replacing him yet. And I’m glad that Bonnar is back on the main card and hope he proves that he deserves to be there – but I’m definitely rooting for him.

I don’t think Brock is an asshole. Frank Mir ran his mouth. He got what he deserved.Mir didn’t leave the ring with his nose in the air, like he did when he arrived. But i like Carwin in this one. After Carwin destroys Brock, bring on the great Fedor. And Fedor is the best heavyweight in the world.RIGHT NOW ANYWAY. thanks
Twitter: extremejohn
Did you see Fedor get tapped out with ease last week?
Everytime I hear ppl say brock is quicker than shane Carwin I wonder what the hell have they been smoking. Shane is what a I called once in a life time atleast. guys that goes two rounds with lesnar can’t even get out of the first 4 minutes of the first round. Is amazing to me that we as ppl goes by the name not the performance. Shane not only can’t hit but he’s a fighter. When I watch brock not only he can’t take punch but if opponent can’t master any kind of challenge he start sucking air. If brock make it past the first 3minutes I’ll stop watching the fight. 2min 58seconds, that will be all the time shane needs to dismantle brock
Twitter: extremejohn
I like how you have it right down to the minute Aziz
I think some peopl give brock more glory than he deserves. If he hadnt been already famous thanks to fake wrestling, he wouldnt be so “great” in most peoples eyes. the only, and I mean only, reason brock has won the few fights he has, is becasue of his size. Carwin is the only person brock is going to fight that Is equal in size. Carwin has won 13 fights via knockout/submission all in the first round. I am possitive that carwin is going to destroy brock. You can bet on that.

Very well put. Thank you for taking the time to comment. ONLY 2 days to go!!

Carwin x2
Shane will make Lesnar look like the inexperieced fighter he is…Carwin 1st round late tko.
Twitter: extremejohn
Seems to be the opinion of many that’s for sure, only a few short hours to go. I can barely contain myself at this point.
Shane will destroy ! Brock has no chance when Shane starts dropping those heavy hands. Should and could be early!
Twitter: extremejohn
I guess at this point we all know how that theory went. I was right there with you. Shocked.

Can’t wait to see this one on Spike TV. I didn’t get a chance to go to the bars to see it live.

brock lesnar is a good fighter but when he got dropped by carwin he could only sit there and take it was funny to see him run around the cage like a little girl when he got hit
Twitter: extremejohn
I agree Jack. Lesnar doesn’t like getting hit hard, he doesn;t mind being hit but hates being hit hard as most people do. Only difference is he’s a MMA fighter.
I think Carwin developed the blueprint for how to beat Lesnar and just barely failed with it. But Cain didn’t
I’ll be interested to see how the heavyweight division plays out over the next few months. Cain vs. Dos Santos and then Lesnar getting Overeem here in a few months. I’d love to see Cain get a shot at Overeem at Cowboys Stadium or some other giant venue. Good post John.
