I can’t believe that I am this far ahead in posting my UFC 117 Fight Card and Predictions post, especially since I just finished wrapping up my UFC 116 predictions a few days ago, which turned out to be two weeks before the actual event. On August 9, 2010 UFC 117 Silva vs Sonnen kicks off at the Oracle Arena in Oakland California, if UFC fans are lucky the hype surrounding the main event will be matched by the action in the ring. By “action” I don’t mean a bunch of ridiculous taunting and foolishness by Anderson Silva, by “action” I mean an actual fight between two people in an octagon.
Anyway, here are my UFC 117 predictions as well as the UFC 117 fight card.
UFC 117 Silva vs Sonnen

UFC Middleweight Championship
Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonnen
Here we go with what could very well be another Anderson Silva horse and pony show as Silva defends his UFC Middleweight Championship against the only guy that was willing to jump up and down and scream that he should fight Anderson Silva, Chael Sonnen. Don’t get me wrong Sonnen has skills and can win this fight just like any other fight, however based on the Anderson Silva training video (scroll down) it seems as if Steven Seagal might be training Silva to kill Sonnen. O.k, maybe not that bad, but check out the video then leave a comment with your thoughts on the training that Silva is going through.
It’s no secret that Silva bugs the hell out of me with the show boating and excessive boredum he often brings to the ring, it’s also no secret that I am known for picking underdogs or flat out picking who I want to win vs who I think will actually win. I am pretty confident that Anderson Silva will dismantle Sonnen, however my money is on Sonnen on August 7th. My UFC 117 prediction Chael Sonnen.
Junior Dos Santos vs Roy Nelson
Big Roy Nelson will be bringing the blubber along with some heavy heavy hands into the octagon when he faces off against Junior Dos Santos at UFC 117. This fight is going to deliver plenty of fireworks for UFC fans, and I would be willing to bet that this fight doesn’t go the distance. It’s taken me a while to take to Roy Nelson, especially with his less than exciting fights while staying at the Ultimate Fighter house. After Nelson’s :30 destruction of Stefan Struve at UFC Fight Night 21 I almost found myself willing to believe that he would defeat Dos Santos at UFC 117, I finally got a hold of myself and realize that even though Nelson is coming along nicely he’s still not there yet. My prediction Junior Dos Santos.
Matt Hughes vs Ricardo Almeida
Hmmm…. Sorry that’s just the first thought that comes to my mind when I think of this fight, it should be a pretty entertaining fight but I just don’t see it being action packed and full of excitement. I will save the “fluff” and get down to my prediction. My UFC 117 prediction Matt Hughes.
Clay Guida vs Rafael Dos Anjos
Now this is what I am talking about! Clay Guida is back in the mix boys and girls and I an’t wait to see the crazy haired freak get down to business at UFC 117 against Rafael Dos Anjos. Guida isn’t going to have an easy night by any means, but you know me and my feelings about the energy and excitement that Clay Guida brings to the cage every single time he steps in, win or lose. My UFC 117 Prediction Clay Guida.
Jon Fitch vs Thiago Alves
This should be an incredible fight between two well rounded fighters, the more patient Fitch vs the highly aggressive Thiago “The Pitbull” Alves. I am going to go with the more aggressive Alves in this one, even with Fitch having more octagon experience. My prediction Thiago Alves.
Thiago Silva vs Tim Boetsch
I couldn’t help but include my UFC 117 prediction for Silva vs Boetsch because this fight has some serious potential for fireworks followed up by a nasty ass KO. My prediction Thiago Silva.

I really hope Chael is going to beat Silva, but really I don’t see it happening. At least there’s some other great fights there.

Silva is the only one I care about. Not a fan of him anymore. All the other ones, if it’s fun to watch I like them both. Boring fights BLOWWWW.

I would have to agree, boring MMA fights or UFC events are terrible, almost as the ones when referee’s make massive mistakes. That really sucks.
OK, John, I am impressed. Not only did you post about UFC 116 and the last Strikeforce event, but you’re already on UFC 117. Not too shabby, bro, not too shabby.
I can’t stand Anderson Silva and his last fight was the icing on the cake for me. I’d really like to see Sonnen win. But that is only going to happen if charges ahead and goes after Silva. Otherwise, it will turn into another showboating event, as you mentioned above.
Personally, I think the UFC should not have made this the main event. Considering Silva’s past actions, I felt they needed a bigger card to bring people back and give them the chance to trust a Silva fight again. I like Roy Nelson, but that’s not enough. And Matt Hughes is old and I really don’t get excited about his matches as much as I used to. Dana White said he wanted to make it up the fans, but I felt they could have done more. But if Brock gets KTFO tomorrow, I suspect I’ll be happy for at least two months and will cruise through UFC 117 without a care in the world. LMAO.
Everything you wrote you’re probably right, but because I’m patriotic I’ll cheer for Mirko CroCop Filipovic in every fight!
I think A silva will find a way to win, but this will be the first time we see him VERY bloody. He will be on his back for a while in this fight… Dos Santos by boxing clinic. R Almeida will choke out Hughes, and make a run at the title, Guida’s cardio will win him the fight. If Fitch can take down Alves (KOS could not), he will grind out a win – think Alves could KO Fitch, Finally, T Silva will KO Tim in the 1st. The safe money is on T Silva + R Almeida….

Picking against Silva is hard to believe. If he tries, I don’t think he can lose. Hopefully not another mess like the last time.

My Predictions is the same as your but only anderson silva. I think anderson going knock him out or tap him out. Sonnen just talk, even if he takes him down anderson going still kick his ass so my money on anderson

i agree with you on everything but one thing saying nelsons’s “not there yet” is way far fetched ,he has wayyyy more experiance than juionor and i see his ground game being displayed in this fight, nelsons grappling skills are world class , hes a black belt in bjj, and sumitted frank mir, in a grappling match.

I was on vacation and missed UFC 117. I was able to watch the Silva/Sonnen fight on YouTube though. Since then I’ve read where people are saying that Silva proved he has the heart of a champion. I don’t know if I’m in that camp. He got beat for five rounds and maybe just got lucky. I’d like to see Belfort take it to him though.
OMG what a fight. I really felt that the spider was about to get his ass KICKED…So sad for Sonnen, sucks to lose like that….
