UFC 99 Predictions and Results

by Extreme John on June 2, 2009 |

Coming off of a very exciting UFC 98 which featured a highlight reel knockout of Rashad Evans compliments of Lyoto Machida. I went 2 out 4 on my UFC 98 Predictions, I picked more fights than that, but there were late fighter replacements that I did not make my predictions on.

The fighter salaries for UFC 98 seemed right inline for the performances on the night, with Lyoto Machida, Matt Serra and Matt Hughes receiving knockout of the night (Lyoto Machida) and fight of the night (Serra and Hughes).

Now it’s time for what I believe will be a much less exciting UFC 99 Fight Card, don’t get me wrong there are some decent fights on the card that I am excited to see. For the most part the UFC 99 main event featuring Wanderlei Silva vs Rich Franklin just doesn’t excite me, I will explain why in my UFC 99 Predictions below.

I am actually more excited about a couple of the other fights on the UFC 99 fight card like Cain Velasquez vs Cheick Kongo, there is no doubt in my mind that fight will have some serious fireworks. One thing to keep in mind in regards to the UFC 99 fight card is that it may seem a little soft, with a super event planned for the historic UFC 100 this should come as no surprise to any mixed martial arts fan. It’s time for me to shut my mouth and post my UFC 99 Predictions, keep in mind the Live Results for UFC 99 will be posted throughout the entire event on MMA Punk.com

UFC 99 Silva vs Franklin Trailer

Wanderlei Silva (32-9-1) vs Rich Franklin (24-3-0)

As much as I appreciate and respect Rich Franklin I just don’t see him as the same fighter he was before having his nose mashed into his face 300 times by Anderson Silva’s knee’s. Even before the Anderson Silva destruction’s I honestly wouldn’t pick him to beat the Axe Murder Wanderlei Silva. There are fighters out there that have that extra brutal mentality and there are fighters out there who are excellent fighters, unless Rich Franklin out smarts Silva, Silva will brutalize Franklin.

My UFC 99 Pick: Wanderlei the “Axe Murderer” Silva

Cain Velasquez (5-0-0) vs Cheick Kongo (14-4-1)

This is a tough fight to call, Cain Velasquez is no joke and Cheick Kongo has been destroying people as of late. This will be one of the best fights of the night, if not the best fight of the night. I will be surprised to see this fight go the distance as both Velasquez and Kongo can easily finish fights.

My UFC 99 Pick: Cheick Kongo

Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ Filipovic (24-6-2) vs Mustafa Al-Turk (6-4-0)

When Mirko “Cro Cop” made his UFC debut I had already hated him, he was the super hyped bad ass that was going to kick people’s skulls in as he rampaged the UFC. I wanted to see Cro Cop get destroyed, I can be like that…. If a fighter is super hyped it usually pisses me off to the point I just want to see that fighter get beatdown so the hype can be reduced, probably a huge part of the reason I want to see Fedor fight in the UFC. I have said it before, Fedor would get owned by numerous UFC fighters if he were to get his ass into the UFC, something he will probably never do.

I will never see Fedor as the best pound for pounder fighter in all of mixed martial arts, in the same fashion I never would have been a fan of Cro Cop had he not been beat up in the UFC. Now that Cro Cop has taken his UFC licks and most of the his loyal ass kissers no longer see him as invincible I can actually say I wouldn’t mind seeing him win a fight. I hope Cro Cop’s return to the UFC ends in victory for him this time around.

My UFC 99 Pick: Mirko “Cro Cop”

Dan Hardy (21-6-0) vs Marcus Davis (16-3-0)

Marcus Davis always comes ready to bring the fireworks and provides exciting finishes when he fights. I respect fighters with the excitment of Marcus Davis.

My UFC 99 Pick: Marcus Davis

Caol Uno (25-11-4) vs Spencer Fisher (22-4-0)

This is another one of those tough fights and one of the other fights that I am excited about seeing on the UFC 99 card. Spencer Fisher always tends to be involved in high pace exciting fights, as I stated before I respect fighters that can provide that form of entertainment on a consistent level.

My UFC 99 Pick: Spencer Fisher

I had a blast during UFC 98 Twittering along with @mmapunk and @dirtymartinigirl during each of the fights, follow me on twitter if you want to interact during UFC 99. We definitely differ in opinion. I think Franklin has the technical ability to knock out (or at least outpoint) Silva. Kongo is a good matchup for Velasquez…it will be a 3 round decision with Kongo on his back for the majority. The Davis/Hardy contest is the most difficult to predict. Hardy is a solid play as an underdog because he can knock Davis out.

@MMAMoneyline I can see your point on each pick, you have to keep in mind I suck at betting and typically bet with my heart as opposed to who I think will win the fight.

Good picks! I am really looking forward to the Cain vs Kongo fight. They are big and bad and throw heavy hands with bad intentions. If the old Kongo shows up there’s going to be a war. If not Kongo going to get knocked the @#$#out!

@James I can’t wait for that fight either, all though I saw an advertisement last night for the Heath vs Cain fight

Personally, I could just skip UFC 99 and start looking forward to UFC 100. But I’ll watch it and agree with you, in that I doubt Rich Franklin can win. I never really cared for him and felt that he only got the hype he did because he KO’d Ken Shamrock on national television.

@TCC I wouldn’t skip the entire UFC 99 but the main event certainly doesn’t make me overly excited. UFC 100 well that’s an entirely different story.

I think the UFC 99 cards like you say may not be as exciting as the 98 card and the main event is actually a fight im not that interested in, the Velasquez, Kongo fight i think does hold the most appeal, Im going for Velasquez by unanimous decision, kongo doesnt get knocked out and hes a big dude, but Velasquez has more cardio and more tools!

Hardy vs Davis is going to be fireworks with all the trash talk, i see Hardy winning this by knockout due to reach and movement.

Wanderlei Silva vs Rich Franklin – Franklin to win
Cain Velasquez vs Cheick Kongo – Velasquez to win
Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ Filipovic vs Mustafa Al-Turk – Cro Cop to win
Dan Hardy vs Marcus Davis – Dan Hardy to win
Caol Uno vs Spencer Fisher – Spencer Fisher to win

Youre a fcking idiot if you dont think Fedor is the best.
You probably started watching MMA one or two years ago and have only seen UFC, lol.

I pity you.

@dasdas actually while your having some pitty for me you should also have pitty for the fact that (as usual) your wrong, you can’t even post in the right article you moron. How bout this let’s play a little game, you continue to pretend that you have been watching MMA longer than everyone else and on August first you can come back here and do two things.

1) Kiss my ass, when Fedor gets beat by Josh
2) You can apologize for ASSuming, it does make you look like an ass

Your absolutely wrong about Fedor. Timing is everything, everything. That man is a machine. I watched a fight of his and his corner blows a whistle in rhythm with his opponents strikes at their furthest point of reach. I watched his entire way of persuit switch almost like a glitch in a movie perfectly in tune with the blows of the whistle. A split second later he was tattooing the guy. Fedors no joke. I can’t wait for his chance to prove to you just how bad he really is. To boot, his demeanor is ice cold. The man is a fighting genius. Always thinking and as calm as a cat ready to strike.
