Using Social Media to Develop a Product

Develop a Product with Social Media

Social media can easily become an addiction for any small business owner that really digs in and looks for new ways to do fun and exciting things, not to mention how much fun social media can be when it comes to networking with your customers. Any of you that subscribe to my rss feed, connect with me via my Facebook fan page or follow @extremejohn on Twitter probably have a pretty good idea of just how deep my social media addiction runs.

I read a tremendous amount of social media articles and can often be seen looking for that next exciting social media event, especially if it’s something I can put to use in any of my small business’s. Recently Mike came to me with a killer contest idea for the Extreme Tan and Smoothies Facebook fans that I just couldn’t pass up, the rules were nice and simple like I like them when it comes to our social media giveaways.

Submit the best idea for a new tanning lotion via the Extreme Tan and Smoothies Facebook fan page, the best video submission wins 1 free year of tanning and a free bottle of the lotion that they created. We will be adding the winning tanning lotion idea to our indoor tanning salon product line for a limited time.

Design Your Own Tanning Lotion

Design a Tanning Lotion

As exciting as the contest was it wouldn’t have been as exciting if we didn’t come away with an excellent tanning lotion idea to pursue and share within our Florida tanning salons. Not only did we receive an excellent tanning lotion idea, we received multiple thanks to our incredible customers. I wanted to share the winning video that was submitted by Jessica who would like a tanning lotion that can be used at indoor tanning salons and when tanning outdoors, Jessica’s lotion is properly named “Shimmer Me Sexy & Sun Safe”. Jessica’s tanning lotion video submission was an easy winner as we felt it fit the safe tanning and echo friendly lifestyle that Extreme Tan and Smoothies tries to convey.

Best Video

This contest really was a blast and it turned out to be a big homerun for everyone involved, Jessica gets to enjoy a free year of tanning at Extreme Tan and Smoothies Florida’s best tanning salon company and we get to work on an exciting new tanning lotion. We are already planning our next social media giveaway, I will be sure to share the results here with all of you as they unfold. Feel free to leave a comment, have a great day!

Social media is indeed a wonderful beast, it’s probably one of those things that can be annoying but is truly an awesome advertising platform for new and old products

Hi Ileane I hope everything is going great, I haven’t seen you in a while. I’m finally getting back into the swing of things which is nice, it really took me a month to catch up after tanning season ended.

I haven’t posted the other videos but that is a great idea for a post, I will have to show you some link luv on that one :) Thank you.

Hi John,
Another great social media idea to come forth from the Extreme John camp and it’s a good one. If I had any talent at all at concocting lotions I would enter your contest. Unfortunately anyone who used a lotion that I made would be subjecting their skin to unnecessary risk!

I do have a favor to ask along the lines of social media ideas and knowing what a big fan of Twitter you are (as I am) I would appreciate you taking a look and maybe making a comment or suggestion on my latest social media marketing experiment: http://www.my-baby-pet.com/pet-adoption/social-media-to-the-dog-rescue

Thanks, man

Social media sites are really great. Great from driving traffic and marketing products. But social media shouldn’t be all about promotion, but also about communication and networking. This is a great way to build up relationships and they you can effectively market your products.

Thanks for this great post John :)

I like how you’ve embraced social media with a contest. I think running contests are great when trying to use social media effectively as you can tell a story across them and get people involved. Video seems to work particularly good as people seem to respond to it extremely well.

While I know that social media is extremely helpful for developing a product but I struggle with how much time it takes to get the job done.

I agree. Social Media is a great tool in developing a product. Since, most or even all of us are part of a global social network,we are able to spread the potential of a certain product. It is also the worst tool when it comes to spamming and stuffs like that. Anyways, there are really good side and bad side of everything.
By the way, the contest sounds fun!

Did anyone here try Jessica’s tanning lotion? I wonder why they chose her tanning lotion. Was it because you can use it outdoor or indoor? I was working on a tanning lotion but I was too late! Congrads Jessica!

Just imagine millions of eyes watching these social media 24/7 of course it’s a very powerful marketing target, if we just can find the best way to optimally use them it could be the ticket to get rich.

Social media is a great way to generate offline business. A good friend of mine runs an auto shop and he generates half his business just from facebook via giveaways and other creative stuff.
