Yahoo Meme the Lonley World

by Extreme John on October 15, 2009 |

I had a few extra minutes to play around on the World Wild Web today and came across Yahoo Meme, a new micro-blogging soon to be social networking or social spamming site by the good folks at Yahoo.

Now keep in mind that Yahoo Meme is new and fresh out of it’s beta stage, it’s hardly anywhere near the level of Twitter in regards to users and to be totally honest I can’t say that I think it will ever reach that level. Twitter is a beast, a beast that exploded in a very short period of time and those explosions rarely happen with every new replica concept that comes flying out of the gate, there is only one Facebook and there is only one My Space (for it’s time).

yahoo-memeYahoo Meme – My Meme Screenshot

One thing that Meme has going for me is that Yahoo can feed it some real traffic and targeted as well, those internet folks that live under a rock and don’t know about Twitter, but already have existing Yahoo accounts could very well roll right over into Yahoo Meme and with ease.

yahoo-meme-dashboardYahoo Meme Dashboard Screenshot

Unlike Twitter which offers one single option to Tweet messages Yahoo Meme offers a few additional message types that you can send as a Meme (I hate the name), you can choose to send a text meme, a picture meme, a video meme or an audio meme. This is nice because it really opens the door for a nice assortment of spam for micro-blogging spammers to spam with.

How to Use Yahoo Meme

I won’t explain the sign-up process, it’s pretty simple click here to signup for Meme. Honestly once you sign up Meme is a breeze to figure out, seriously one of my mutts could probably figure it out.

1. How to sent a text Meme from the Yahoo Meme dashboard

yahoo-meme-textYahoo Text Meme Screenshot

Simply click on the word “text” from your dashboard and type your Meme message, told you it was easy. Oh yeah you can slap links in here if you want to and your Meme messages can be longer than Twitters 140 character limit. Yay, longer spam messages! :)

2. How to Send a Photo Meme from the Yahoo Meme Dashboard

yahoo-meme-link-pictureYahoo Meme Picture Meme with link Screenshot

There are two ways to send a picture Meme, the screen shot above displays how easy it is to share a picture on Meme by slapping the link to the picture right into the Meme field.

yahoo-meme-upload-pictureYahoo Meme Upload Picture Screenshot

In addition to pasting a link into Meme to share a picture you can also upload a picture directly from your computer, this is a killer feature as far as I am concerned.

3. How to Share a Video on Meme

yahoo-meme-videoShare video on Meme

Another killer feature that comes built into the action packed Meme is the video sharing feature, copy a url from Vimeo or You Tube and paste it into Meme and you can share it with all your Meme buds. Seriously, that’s a pretty bad ass feature. Twitter doesn’t have this either, however third party clients do offer it into Twitter as if I woulod ever run to a bunch of different sites to share a video on Twitter. Nah.

4. How to Share Audio Files on Yahoo Meme

In the event you want to scream a sexy little message to that porn star you follow on Meme there’s even a little Audio Meme that makes it easy for you to breath heavy, and say all those little things you wanna say. No hardcore stuff here kiddies it’s Yahoo Meme.

Yahoo Meme Navigation

Yahoo Meme WordPress Plugins

  • Memepress WordPress Plugin for Yahoo Meme is about the only Yahoo Meme WordPress Plugin and it’s actually for displaying your Meme feed into the sidebar of your WordPress Blog.

Yahoo Meme is still new and I’m sure that in no time there will be plenty of Meme WordPress Plugins, Meme Desktop Managers and Meme Blackberry apps all of which will be needed to add steam to Meme. I can only imagine all of the minds at work now building Meme Follower Tools and Meme Mass Follow Tools, of course I wouldn’t mind seeing a few of these things dropped from the menu. It might just keep Yahoo Meme exciting and clean enough to pick up more consistent Meme users.

After getting into Meme I quickly rounded up three followers, none of which that I actually know and all of which that are a company of some sort, this was of course perfect because it made me feel like the first time I tried Twitter. Yahoo Meme is a lonely world right now, it’s new give it a try and if you like it follow me on Meme, leave a comment and let me know what you think of Meme. Is it a Twitter rip off or do you like the features better than Twitter?

Oh yeah one final thought before I get out of here, I wouldn’t mind seeing Seesmic desktop or Tweet Deck add the ability to have a Yahoo Meme column or select your Yahoo Meme account when sending a message, this would make posting your Tweets, Meme’s and Facebook status updates all in one shot a complete breeze. Get moving Seesmic.

You are always right on top of things, John. I am a Yahoo user and, yet, this was the first have heard of Yahoo Meme. I hate the name, too. Looks like they could have invented a better name than that. Of course, that leaves the door wide open for some enterprising soul to come in, take the best parts, improve the overall concept, get a name that flows and then just do it better. Probably on a lower budget at that.

You mention MySpace. Do you not think that Twitter will run its course as MySpace has. Not to say that MS isn’t still a huge site, but Facebook is so much more intuitive and most of my friends, dinosaurs all, are on Facebook. Someone will eventually come along and improve on Twitter’s concept and take their market as well. Survival of the fittest and all that!

It sounds like people to follow are pretty easy to find on Meme. I guess you will keep us posted on how easy it is to entice followers and what tools make it more effective.

That’s one of the reasons I read ExtremeJohn. You do great research. Thanks.

@Keith@Norman Rockwell Art, thanks Keith I really didnt have to do much with this it is really simple.

In regards to your question, there is no doubt in my mind that Twitter will run it’s course. I know for me personally it’s getting more annoying than it is getting better, I get bored easily and Meme might be something with a little spice to fill the gab, minus the terrible name.

Meme is a great tool for social networking. There are tools that come out every week, but I feel better trusting a big name like Yahoo to get the job done.

I like how it looks and that it has “more features” than twitter, but I’m not sure whether or not I want to use it – I mean, I spend my time blogging, not wanting to maintain 10 social media accounts :)

Yep! Got that one too John. Right now, I am not so sure if Yahoo Meme will ever get to be popular at all. I mean I have signed up since it was still in beta and I have not touched it since. Maybe after reading this, I’ll see how it’s doing. Maybe I’ll be surprised that you are the only person following me at Yahoo Meme

I do think overall as good as the features are, I don’t see it happening for Meme.

Will be looking for it for building some traffic.

A feature I would greatly like to see in it that when you do any Meme it will notify all your Yahoo Messenger people about it. I need this feature because I have more than 2000 people added in Yahoo messenger which will surely help me to build huge traffic

@Extreme John, Ya, That number is really damn too high and it’s increasing daily..I haven’t logged into my messenger account from almost a month because the daily friend requests(soooo many) annoys me a lot and I have to click accept around 30-50 times..But it’s actually building a big list :0

I hope they bring such kind of feature stated in the previous comment…

I’m going to give it a shot, but it looks like it has a lot of things going against it.

It looks like it’s just a clone of Twitter and it’s always a bad sign when people will be saying things like I’m going to tweet on Yahoo Meme.

And I always thought a Meme in internet vocab was those things like Wordless Wednesday.

I already have a Meme account but completely forgot about it… though it has more features than Twitter.. I guess it will take time for me to adjust to it. Btw how “Meme” is pronounced there’s are lot of confusion regarding this.. I have came across like 7-8 different pronunciations example like may-may, mee mee, maim, meh mey.. and other words I can’t even remember.

@Nehh, yeah and having 2700 different interpretations of a word isn’t a great thing either.

I guess thats not entirely true because Twitter has all kinds of variations that people refer to it and Tweets by.

The point of these social bookmarking sites is that your friends or followers are all on the same network. Even if they try to integrate other networks with their new service who wants to up sticks and move to another service. Yahoo are far too late with Meme and I’d expect it to slowly fade away.

Thanks for reviewing this thing – I hadn’t even heard of it until this entry.

Sometimes I just feel overwhelmed by all the stuff I feel I have to do to get my blog out there, to feel like I did my best. I don’t think I’m going to be using Meme anytime soon, but even as I say that, I feel guilty.

@ashok, I know the feeling but I think as someone that blogs it’s important to realize that not everything will need to be done, forever for it to help your blog.

Some things you do in the beginning and other things you spend more time on in the middle, and in the end chances are your not doing anything :)

Don’t feel guilty, feel good about whatever it is that you do as long as it’s giving 100%.

I’ve written so much about this Meme and had been on the lookout for any improvements. Yahoo Meme allows up to 2000 characters so much more than a 140 tweet. If Twitter could adopt such a clean and organized user interface as Meme, they surely can kill this service before it even gets them.

At this point, I just don’t see enough of a reason for people to switch over from Twitter. However, Facebook was, at one point, seen as inferior and pointless to Myspace users, so we’ll see.

On another note, I got a kick out of your cynical review, Extreme John. LOL.

I signed up for MeMe a while ago, I think it was in beta. I just followed you but I haven’t done much on there. Most of the people I see there are posting photos and a lot of them are pretty cool. You could dominate MeMe with your pictures. Speaking of that, what plugin are you using to display your pics?

One thing about MeMe that I like so far is the speed. Twitter has been down all morning and I’m always reloading the page when it takes too long. Of course Twitter has a lot more traffic too.
